A few problems I’d like to highlight: 1. Support for Betterment app passwords. I can’t add my betterment account on plaid because it’s not playing nicely with betterments app passwords..so I’m manually managing for now. 2. Crypto support. Crypto is here to stay. As a modern personal finance app crypto is a must have for anyone under the age of 40. ### 5/5 — Amazing tool to have *2022-09-12, version 1.1.8* After reading Grant’s book Financial Freedom, I downloaded this app and have been loving it. There is a lot of promise and potential for growth in functionality. Initially I had issues with connectivity of institutions but I do not think I waited more than a couple of hours for a response to my message to the support team. The level of support and attention make it seem as if I have a direct line to Logan who responds with positive and productive solutions. Is there a way to calculate this correctly. For ex i put my FIRE spending as $5k/mo but my current spending is $1k/mo. I think the calculated FI date is calculating with $5k spending per month although my savings will be much higher. ### 5/5 — Gamifying the FI Journey *2022-06-07, version 1.0.13* Unlike many of the other financial apps out there, Topia really focuses on the journey to financial independence. There is so much potential here. Just having an app specifically built for FI is soo much better than other net worth trackers I've been using. There were some issues early on during the Beta, but the team behind Topia seemed to fix these very quickly. I am now able to connect all of my accounts to Topia and then see a very accurate representation of my FI journey. However, there’s an over-reliance on Plaid, in which only 01 brokerage account is compatible and none of my banks, and the app also doesn’t seem to understand the idea of negative net worth. I’ve just started my FIRE journey and this seems like an awesome app, the only one that does all the math for you. **Developer response:** Thanks for the review! Now that we have launched, you should be able to connect most of your brokerage accounts? And we've solved the negative net worth issue you referenced so that should all be running through smoothly. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Looks promising… *2022-06-04, version 1.0.12* Unable to connect to any of my banking institutes. When you try to search common banks, it says nothing found. Only shows UK banks. Prior to this update I could see all my banks, but when you logged on it would say success, and then give an error that something went wrong. I’m hanging on cause this seems like a potentially great app. Once the bugs are fixed I’ll update my review to 5 stars. No emails found on website for tech support. **Developer response:** Hi Matthew, Logan here. When you wrote this review (June 4) we were still in Beta mode. We have now launched Topia and those issues you referenced are all fixed. Do you mind giving Topia another go? ### 1/5 — Clunky and not user friendly *2022-05-30, version 1.0.11* The app crashes and doesn’t have a good way to track investment properties and cash flow **Developer response:** Hi, we were still in Beta mode when you wrote this review (30/05) which is why you were experiencing some errors with the app. We have since fully launched with the new and improved version of Topia. At the moment we have not built in the functionality to track investment properties, we've focused on tracking stocks and bonds. Tracking investment properties is in our roadmap so we hope to get this integrated within the next 3-6 months. I'm not too sure what you mean by cash flow? Is this cash flow in relation to your property investments? ### 1/5 — App Doesn’t Work *2022-05-02, version 1.0.9* The app had a countdown to a US release on Saturday. After the countdown finished it now has a page that says you must update the app but there is not app update. Please fix this. **Developer response:** Hi, Logan the cofounder of Topia here. We ended up changing the launch date which should have been reflected in the update and countdown. We are now launching on May 30th. Sorry for any confusion. The app does work, we have simply pushed back the launch date. Edit: Now we have officially launched Topia and it is no longer in Beta mode you can now access Topia with no issues. If you could give Topia another try everything will be up and running and working as it should be :) ### 1/5 — Can’t access it *2022-05-01, version 1.0.9* I’m also unable to get past the Home Screen of the app. It keeps telling me to update the app in the App Store, but then the App Store doesn’t give me the chance to update it… **Developer response:** Hey, it's Logan from Topia here. I can’t scroll to actually join the app. **Developer response:** Sorry about that. What iphone model are you on? ### 2/5 — Price point *2024-05-20* I really want to try this app out, but the $9.99 / month price point is a non-starter for me. I know there’s a 14 day trial, but I don’t want to set things up if I know I’m going to have to subscribe to yet another subscription (this is probably the case with most of the FI/RE community). I already have some free tools in place (Wealthfront, Empower, Google Sheets) and can’t justify the cost of this if it provides the same functionality. If there were videos or a demo mode that I could look at that shows the added value of this app, then I’d be more willing to give it a shot. It would be much easier to justify the cost if it was like $2 - $3 / month. ### 2/5 — Some of the basics are broken *2023-12-07* Potential here but it’s glitchy, not a personal capital replacement unfortunately The investment return math seems broken, it seems like it’s not taking monthly contributions into account when forecasting the portfolio value. The projected fi date math they gave only makes sense if I assume zero future contributions which is not what is set. Also the math for how much you are/could be saving needs cleaned up, as it asks for net monthly after tax income then complains that I’m saving “too much” since 401k contributions are pretax and an employer match isn’t factorable anywhere - but if you put in pretax income it says you have a huge access Unfortunately plaid doesn’t support hardly any of my financial institutions, I was willing to plug everything in manually but the broken math above and multiple other small glitches robs the app of any remaining value unfortunately. I don’t want to be too harsh since I see so much potential here but there is work still to do. ### 4/5 — Concept is good, not ready to be this price *2024-05-06* Lots of small to medium issues. If I sign up with my Apple ID it doesn’t import my age, and assumes I’m 18 for all of the calculations and visualizations. It shows what age I will be when I retire, which is wrong. Inputting numbers is wonky and they should just use standard boxes with data validations AFTER it’s inputted and not while I type . It was a pain to type a percentage for my mortgage rate. I’m being scrutinous because of the expensive monthly fees associated with the app. I’d expect it to be more polished and easy to navigate. All of the content is great though and it fulfills its advertised purpose of skipping out on the complex excel sheets and serves as a great one stop shop for what folks need to see their FI journey ### 4/5 — Good alternative to Mint *2024-02-25* When Mint decided to close its doors and fold into Credit Karma, I was sad. As a long time Mint user, more for its net worth feature than its budgeting feature, I was less than impressed with Credit Karma. I looked at several alternatives, and Topia was a clear winner for me. It does an excellent job of tracking assets and liabilities, giving a clear picture of net worth changes over time. Topia uses a third party service called Plaid to make the connections to your accounts. For the most part, this works seamlessly much like the experience with Mint. There was an issue connecting to one account, which eventually got resolved, and another institution I have an account with just isn’t supported yet. You can still add accounts and track them manually in those cases. If all my accounts were connected, this would be a five star app. There are additional features for tracking cash flow and financial independence planning that I haven’t needed yet. For simple automated net worth tracking, this app gets the job done. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Great and bugs fixed promptly *2024-05-19* I left a previous 4 star review with some pain points. Those have all been resolved. This app is great for planning and learning about the FI movement and how it can and could apply to your situation. I’m hesitant to say that I’d keep this app forever just due to the cost but it’s absolutely worth subscribing for a few years. ### 5/5 — Great for visualization *2024-05-12* I like how easy it is to answer some basic questions in Topia to get different projections that help you become more confident during your journey to financial freedom. The fact that you can connect your accounts makes it even easier to see if you’re on track or need to make adjustments to reach your goals. Having the option go go through different financial scenarios is also helpful. It lets you tailor the app to realistic goals that better align with your lifestyle. ### 5/5 — Love the concept *2024-03-13* My husband and I are big FIRE fans, especially after reading The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins. Since then, we’ve devoted a lot of time and energy maxing out all our tax saving investment accounts. I’ve loved watching those accounts grow and have been using the Personal Capital app to do so but since the app was bought out by Empower, I’ve noticed more glitches and lost connections so I’ve started shopping around and when I found this app I got very excited! I have a couple accounts not yet supported by this platform but when I reached out to support, Logan responded right away and assured me it’s on his list of account to add. I look forward to seeing this app continue to grow and improve! ### 5/5 — Cool App *2024-02-26* I like that I can add all my accounts and get a real time picture of my assets. Thank you ### 5/5 — Great concept with some minor bugs to work out *2023-05-12* I love the concept and interface of the app. Easy to use and gives projections that other net worth tracking apps don’t. The ability to modify income/spending, add in side hustles with expected monthly income, etc helps give people an understanding and a plan for how much they should save/invest to retire at the age they want to. Plaid is good for the most part, but unable to link certain accounts and/or some accounts do not automatically update every day. Manual tracking is needed in these instances. For several accounts, when I enter the Monthly Contribution and click Save, the changes do not stick. Sometimes it immediately reverts back to $0, and sometimes it does so the next time I log into the app. And I have to update these accounts again in order to get a true picture of my projections. Minor bugs aside, this is a untrue tool that is the first of its kind. I’ve used many net worth tracking apps, but I plan on Topia being my go-to finance app once everything begins to run smoothly and update accordingly. ### 5/5 — Highly recommend for people with non-traditional retirement plans *2023-01-24, version 1.7.1* Topia has helped me to figure out what my current financial situation is and what changes I need to make to meet my FI goals. I haven’t seen another app that targets people who want to pursue a non-traditional retirement path, and it makes it easy for you to plan for life events that impact your path to FI, including having a child or going on sabbatical. Topia also calculates key metrics for you, such as your net worth and savings/investment rate. As a member of the Topia plus community, I’ve received a lot of valuable coaching and resources to help me accelerate my path to FI ### 5/5 — Great app and support *2023-01-20, version 1.7.1* This app simplifies all the complex math behind determining when you can be financially independent. Though it is not required, I would recommend that you find out a bit about FIRE (financially independent retire early) once you download the app. It’ll make more sense if you do. The FIRE concept turns the whole idea of a traditional retirement on it’s head. Grant Sabatier’s Book “Financial Freedom : A Proven Path to All the Money You Will Ever Need,” is a great place to start learning. He in fact co-founded the app with Logan Leckie. This app is built around the information found in that book and comes with a robust support community. I have enjoyed using it and feel confident it is steering me toward my goals. ### 5/5 — Awesome *2022-11-02, version 1.1.9* I love Topia and will continue to use it to track my FI journey. It is very easy to use and is managing it is a breeze. I think Logan and his team have a good thing going and really care about what they are looking to achieve.
