### 5/5 — Awesome App

*2024-07-31, version 6.4.1*

This has got to be the best free topo app I have ever used. It is so easy to use and versatile. I would recommend this to anyone who spends time outdoors. I’ve used it in Utah mainly, but also in Alaska, Idaho, and Montana with no map issues. Try it out.

### 5/5 — Perfect app - couldn’t ask for more

*2024-06-13, version 6.4*

App way too good, works way too well. HAD to be made by an autist

I really appreciate you making this app man

### 5/5 — Wonderful!

*2024-01-30*

I have been looking for this for years. Most map apps lie about offline mode and require web for even the most basic functions. This app is reliable, detailed and safe to rely on when I know 100% I'll be out of service. The GPS accuracy meter is perfect. Things like remaining trail length and the great system to download and manage maps make it a cut above even the paid outdoors apps for my needs. This is almost as reliable as carrying seven minute topos. But 1,200+ of them.

### 4/5 — Super useful

*2023-12-30, version 6.4*

I only wish the app supported CarPlay and maybe even Apple Watch

### 5/5 — Amazing app.

*2023-11-25, version 6.4*

Easy to use. Great data. Perfect for offline trips. Does what is does really well. So many navigation apps try to do everthing and end up doing nothing well. Have loved this app for years. My go to app for backcountry fun.

### 5/5 — Never led me astray!

*2023-11-05, version 6.4*

I have bee using Topo Maos for a few years. It is great for exploring in advance and keep track of where you are in the wild. It works with Wi-Fi, blue tooth off and in airplane mode. I also set “low power” mode to preserve battery. Topo still works withh all that!

### 5/5 — Overall Best US hiking topo maps

*2023-08-28*

I’ve tried several GPS topo map apps and this is the best one. It has all the key features needed for backcountry hiking without cell service and it’s free. But you must download the maps before your trip, which is very easy to do. Features include showing your location while phone is in airplane mode (iPhone, not sure about other platforms), ability to drop flags (e.g. car is here), measure distance, find compass heading to a flag, and more. I’ve used this app for several years on many backpacking trips and it has helped me enormously, especially when hiking off-trail or on snow-covered trails.

### 5/5 — The Best

*2023-07-04, version 6.4*

Ive messed around with all the trail map apps.
This is miles ahead of all the paid apps out there.
This one just works. Download your Maps and go.
Been using this while riding off road in my SxS and is a godsend.

Thank you for making an app that just works.

### 5/5 — The BEST backcountry App

*2023-06-04*

### 5/5 — Download?

*2023-04-14, version 6.4*

Pretty good app, just wish once the grid squares were downloaded it was actually downloaded to the device. I downloaded maps and I can’t even find the maps I downloaded. Only reason for 4 stars, otherwise great app and helpful.

### 5/5 — Awesome App!!!

*2023-03-19, version 6.4*

Awesome app very straightforward and super easy to use.

### 5/5 — Topo maps

*2023-02-26, version 6.4*

Imop its the best trail mapping / offline available. Easy to use , great map / trail detail , i use this in hiking the Catskill mountains in NY , the WMNF in NH and local mountain bike spots at home .
Would love this on the Apple Watch ultra

Side note, this app keeps me on ios if it was available on android i would likely have a Samsung phone.

### 4/5 — Compass

*2023-02-12, version 6.4*

Wonderful app. Easy to use and the price is great, wonderingly if I’ve missed something though, a compass or orienteering the map in the the direction I’m traveling. Anyone know something about this?

### 5/5 — Really great

*2022-11-22, version 6.4*

I’ve only used this a handful of times but it works great and it’s free. Big thanks to the developers! A great tool for backpacking and exploring in general.

### 5/5 — There’s a good chance this app saved me

*2022-09-29, version 6.4*

I was able to easily navigate through pitch black woods in the rain for miles with offline maps.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Useless

*2025-07-30, version 6.4.1*

Cannot zoom in to utilize trails

### 1/5 — Low quality

*2018-10-25, version 5.5*

Cannot zoom in enoughFor use for Maps of local areas. It covers at least 2 to 3 towns minimum.

### 1/5 — The flags clutter the view

*2018-10-10, version 5.5*

It keeps asking to download maps repeatedly

### 1/5 — Not what I wanted

*2018-01-25, version 5.5*

This is not what I wanted. I installed it on my iPad and it won’t let me delete it. Very disappointed to say the least.

### 2/5 — Downloads where are they?

*2026-07-11, version 6.4.1*

Just can find the downloaded maps, are they in a folder somewhere? Thanks

### 2/5 — *Updated*, used to be The BEST backcountry App

*2024-01-28*

As of recently downloaded off-line maps started showing big blocks of white and gray squares. This had been the only map that actually just displayed the image you downloaded. Unfortunately that's no longer the case.

### 2/5 — No search

*2023-02-25, version 6.4*

Great if you know what map you want but no way to search. Can’t find a campground and pull up the map for it.

### 2/5 — Great app! But...

*2019-10-02, version 6.1*

In iOS 13 you can no longer copy Gpx files into the app. Please fix A.S.A.P.!

### 3/5 — What happened??

*2022-10-04, version 6.4*

I have loved this app for years, especially as a river and canyon runner the ability to measure distance by drawing with your finger is incredible. Just recently the app only lets me mark spots with a red flag, where I used to be able to mark with blue, green, yellow, orange, etc. Sounds small, but really nice to be able to differentiate. 5 stars otherwise.

### 3/5 — Good for short hikes

*2017-07-28*

The maps are great. The distance ruler is convenient. Recording trails is nifty. But, twice now, recordings that were very long (somewhere between 8-16 miles, or 12-24 kms) stopped on their own and failed to be saved. My device was plugged into a battery bank and did not run out of power, though it might have restarted due to cold or wet weather. A periodic auto-save feature would be a blessing.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Direct USGS Topo Map Access

*2026-06-24*

If you want real topo maps beyond “terrain”, this app is the one you want; it’s built to be useful, not to make money for the author, and it shows in every feature. You get direct access to real and downloadable USGS topographical maps, with or without satellite imagery. It does lack some nice features other apps have, but I always find myself using this one instead because it works and provides direct access to the thing I actually want, the map. It’s simple, clear, and direct because it was written in the true spirit of the Internet, open information for all. The author made a very helpful tool and I thank them for it. Features: multiple map choices, map downloads for offline use, track recording, waypoint recording, on-the-fly measurement tools, and full data exporting including downloaded maps, all from a small, simple, cleanly coded, efficient, old school, useful app. Yay.

### 5/5 — MY GO-TO

*2025-12-07*

This app is the best. I always carry paper maps, upload the GPXs to my watch, and gave satellite support, but this is hands down the best Topo graphic app. Simple, reliable, works offline. The interface is intuitive and never gets in the way of the task at hand. I recon this app for anyone serious about the outdoors.

### 5/5 — Simply Great

*2025-09-21*

I’m a person that likes the simplicity of this app. Free Topo maps with gps locationing. You can save and categorize pins, use GPS coordinates, and measure distances. No subscriptions and no nagging ads. Very handy. Needs no cell reception to work assuming you downloaded your map segments in advance. Would and have recommended.

### 5/5 — Excellent for backcountry use

*2025-08-05, version 6.4.1*

I've used this app in the Grand Canyon many times. It has been very handy, especially when getting GPX or KML trails from HikeArizona dot com. Has helped in choosing routes when the trail is vague. Love it.

### 5/5 — Amazing!

*2025-07-20*

This app is pretty cool, I use it for when I fly my drone. You can measure distance very easy by just dragging your finger. This helps so I don’t go behind the range, plus it gives you altitudes. This is amazing for setting return to home altitudes so if I do loose signal it won’t crash into a mountain flying back. So not it’s typical use case but works great!

### 5/5 — Simply Works

*2025-06-25, version 6.4.1*

I have been using the app for over 5 years. The app works great, simple to use, easy to understand and navigate. Great app!

### 5/5 — Easy to use, privacy-focused, and reliable mapping app; excellent for backcountry hiking

*2025-05-26*

I’ve used this outstanding app for 7 years now whenever I go hiking. It very wisely focuses on simplicity and avoids the gratuitous features (like social media integration) that bloat competing apps. I have found it to be very stable, and it provides a huge margin of safety in the backcountry (especially for off-trail hikes).

Kudos to the developer for not collecting user data. Unlike some competing apps, this one doesn’t upload and publicize your hikes for others to see.

I do have a few feature suggestions: (1) allow the user to temporarily pause the tracking of a hike, (2) create a search feature to look for a trail or landmark, and (3) allow users to store their GPS tracks on their iCloud accounts so that they’re backed up.

### 5/5 — WOW!

*2024-12-03, version 6.4.1*

What a great app!!! It’s very easy to use and is packed with features! Don’t wait to download this incredibly powerful yet simple tool if you’re an outdoorsman!

### 5/5 — Great topomap with the right features

*2024-09-23*

This is a great app! I have been using it for about 5 years give or take a bit. You can download the maps, estimate routes and never worry about being on line. There are a few features that others offer, but every app has something you want that doesn’t exist.

The beauty of this app is has the most important features and has a one time fee. You can store your maps on your computer to make changing phones easier. Although this feature requires a bit of technical know-how, it seems to work seamlessly- at least on my Mac. The one feature that would make this easier is to have a laptop map manager(?)! Get updates and the disperse them the you have a bit of time to update.

The short story is if you want a good mapping app, that works, this one is it. I use other apps, but I always come back to this app to do the real work.

### 5/5 — Wonderful

*2024-09-02, version 6.4.1*

I’ve only used this a handful of times but it works great and it’s free. You just download the grids you need before hand and it works with gps so no cell service needed. Big thanks to the developers! A great tool for backpacking and exploring in general.
