## What is topo^alpin?

topo^alpin is your planning tool for alpine mountain tours. Draw your route directly on the map or upload a GPX file, analyse slope angles and elevation profiles, and navigate to the summit via GPS – all in one app.

Interactive maps:
- slopemap HD: custom base map and slope angle maps at 5 m resolution for the entire Alps
- Official topographic maps from swisstopo (CH), BEV (AT), LDBV (BY) and IGN (FR)
- Aerial imagery from the official sources of the Alpine countries, one tap to switch
- Avalanche terrain classification ATES (AutoATES v2) for the Alps and SLF CAT/ATH
- Ski touring, snowshoe and hiking trails
- Wildlife and herd protection zones
- Offline maps: download map tiles in advance for areas without reception

Route planning:
- Draw your route on the map with automatic DEM elevation data

- Your own position in decimal degrees, degrees/minutes and UTM – to read out to a dispatcher
- Elevation, GPS accuracy and the age of the fix, offline too
- Nearest named terrain feature where there is signal, e.g. "600 m north-east of Schwarz Berg"
- Emergency numbers by area: 140 (AT), 1414 Rega (CH), 144 (Valais), 118 (Veneto), 112
- Copy the coordinates or share them as a prefilled text message
- Dialling only after a five-second hold, so nothing is triggered by accident
- Not an emergency service: topo^alpin dials through the phone app and transmits no data to a control room itself

- Risk assessment of your GPX tour with key-section markers directly in the elevation profile
- ATES avalanche terrain classification and terrain risk overlay along the whole tour
- Toggle in the elevation profile between Tour-Check and terrain risk
- Avalanche danger level fallback in Settings if no current bulletin is available

topo^alpin is a self-responsibility tool. It does not replace alpine experience or careful tour planning.

### 3.3.1 — 2026-09-19

The base map shows more.

Our own map — the one drawn the same way across every border — has been rebuilt. Every path carries its difficulty in its colour, at a glance. Springs, shelters and staffed refuges are marked, and every named lake stands there with its name.

And the names are right: villages, passes, huts and lakes are called what they are called on the ground. Zoom out and it is the mountain with the name that stays, not its unremarkable neighbouring summit.

Switch as always via the map image — the national map and aerial imagery sit alongside it, unchanged.

On the weather: the forecast now shows when it was fetched. One tap on refresh renews everything that belongs to it — official warnings, avalanche conditions and snow as well. And reopening the app does it for you: what you see is current.

### 3.1.2 — 2026-09-15

New: national map, base map or aerial imagery.

The map can now be switched between three images: the official national sheet many know from paper, our own map drawn the same way across every border, and aerial imagery. The imagery comes from the official sources of the Alpine countries and covers the whole Alpine region. Paths, huts and names stay visible on top of it.

Improved: the map ends at the edge of the Alps. Beyond it there are no contour lines, no slope angles and no terrain data — so the map now visibly stops there instead of promising something it cannot deliver.

Improved: the map runs more smoothly. Tiles are preloaded and cached instead of appearing only as you scroll. Scrolling runs more calmly, and jumping to a summit gets you a settled map sooner.

### 3.0.5 — 2026-09-14

Everything on one map.

The tour no longer needs its own section: load it, draw it, view it — all on the map, with the elevation profile right below.

New: share a tour as a PDF — map, tour figures and elevation profile on one sheet. To pass on to people without the app, or to print out and take along in case the battery runs out on you.

New: open up the elevation profile. Rest your finger on it and a narrow line becomes the steep step in detail.

New: heading at your own position. The position dot shows a bright cone pointing the way the phone is facing, and turns with you.

Plus new weather icons in colour and stronger contrast in light and dark.

And the map loads faster.

### 2.3.0 — 2026-09-05

Safer navigation, calmer planning.

Navigation: Your destination now stays fixed and can't be changed by accident while you're on the move. To end it, hold the stop button for a moment, so navigation won't stop unintentionally. And a mark on the map icon shows when navigation is running — even from other tabs.

Map: It opens again right where you last left the app. The map layers only appear once you have zoomed in close enough.

Settings: Changes take effect immediately, with no saving — and "Reset" brings back the defaults at any time.

Plus more reliable centring of peaks, search results and tours on the map.

### 2.0.3 — 2026-09-02

Fixed: The search field above the map

Tapping the field above the map did not bring up the keyboard, which left the place search out of reach.

The field now accepts input on the first tap.
