## What is TorchPhoto?

TorchPhoto turns photos and videos stored on your own server into a private gallery you can browse comfortably on iPhone and iPad. Add a NAS or personal server with FTP, SFTP, SMB, or WebDAV, keep your existing folder structure, and explore each folder visually instead of digging through a file list.

Uploading or backing up media to a server is useful, but finding those memories again should be just as easy. TorchPhoto is built for that second half of the workflow: fast thumbnails, album-like folder browsing, original file access, iPhone uploads, Shortcuts automation, offline thumbnail review, and private viewing without moving your library to a separate cloud service.

Key features
• Add servers using FTP, SFTP, SMB, or WebDAV
• Browse NAS and personal-server photos and videos as a gallery
• Keep your existing folder structure and view folders like albums
• Generate lightweight thumbnails for faster browsing of large libraries
• Review prepared thumbnail caches when the server is offline or the network is unstable
• Upload and back up iPhone and iPad photos and videos to your own server
• Build automated upload flows with the Shortcuts app
• Skip items that were already uploaded to reduce duplicate backups
• Use favorites, folder tags, server colors, persistent filters, widgets, and slideshows
• Download, share, and inspect metadata for server media

Why TorchPhoto helps
A personal server or NAS is a great place to store original files, but a traditional file browser can make photo archives feel buried. Folder names and filenames are not enough when you want to find a trip, family event, screenshot, video, or older memory. TorchPhoto adds a visual layer to your existing storage. Generate thumbnails once, scan folders by image, return to familiar albums, and open originals only when needed.

For backup workflows
Use TorchPhoto to upload selected media from your iPhone or iPad to the folder you choose. Shortcuts support lets you build routines around charging, Wi-Fi, time of day, selected albums, or recent media. The upload destination is the server connection you configure in TorchPhoto, whether that server uses FTP, SFTP, SMB, or WebDAV.

For private viewing and sharing
Originals remain on storage you control. You can browse cached thumbnails for prepared folders, open originals when the server is reachable, share media when needed, and use Wi-Fi Gallery Share to view a prepared gallery from a browser on the same Wi-Fi network. QR sharing can simplify server setup, and thumbnail sharing can provide lightweight sample images while preserving folder paths.

Recommended for
• People who store photos and videos on a NAS or personal server
• Users who want a gallery experience without reorganizing folders
• Anyone replacing a cloud-first workflow with storage they control
• iPhone and iPad users who want both backup and comfortable browsing

Access to originals and transfers depends on your server and network. Some features and limits differ between Free and Pro.

Use TorchPhoto when your server is already your photo archive, but the browsing experience still feels too much like file management. The app is especially useful for large folders, mixed photo and video libraries, long-term NAS backups, and families who want to keep originals on storage they control while still enjoying a clean mobile gallery.

Thumbnail caches are designed to reduce repeated full-size loading. That helps when you revisit the same folders, travel with an unstable connection, or keep a NAS powered off until you need originals. You can prepare folders, browse cached previews, then open, download, share, or inspect the original media when your server is reachable.

### 5/5 — Clean UI and great SMB support, but...

*2026-07-08*

I wish double-tapping would automatically zoom in to fit the photo perfectly to the screen. It's not that double-tapping doesn't work at all, but when the photo resolution is high, it doesn't function properly and only zooms in a tiny bit. It's a bit of a bummer since this is a standard feature in many apps, including the native iOS Photos app.

Also, when I'm swiping through photos and hit a GIF, it doesn't autoplay. I have to go back to the menu tab and tap the GIF again to get it to play, which is quite inconvenient.

Other than these issues, I'm really satisfied with the app!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Based on your suggestions, version 10.7 improves the zoom behavior when double-tapping high-resolution photos, and GIFs now play automatically while swiping through photos.

You can find detailed update information in the update log on our official website. You are also welcome to send us feedback or feature requests at any time through App Store reviews, email, or the in-app feedback feature, whichever is most convenient for you. We will review your message and respond.

Thank you for using and supporting the app.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 13.5 — 2026-08-21

1. Updated long-pressing the date or time in a timeline item's timestamp to open the corresponding date view. (PRO)
2. Updated long-pressing the map in a timeline item to open the corresponding location view. (PRO)
3. Improved transitions so date and location navigation works reliably even when screens are nested, such as Location View → Area Details → Item View.
4. Prevented the loading screen from remaining visible when already in the date view and prevented duplicate navigation requests.
5. Optimized overly frequent progress updates and unnecessary repeated animations during thumbnail generation to reduce potential lag.

### 13.4 — 2026-08-20

1. Improved timestamp controls
Tap the timestamp to hide it, then tap the lower area of the screen to show it again. Its visibility remains unchanged as you swipe between photos and videos, and it no longer disappears automatically.

2. Timeline and map shortcuts from the timestamp
In PRO, long-press the time to open the timeline for that date, or long-press the map to open the location-based timeline. In FREE, long-pressing the map opens the Maps app. Subtle haptic feedback has also been added.

3. New timestamp guide
A step-by-step guide explains how to hide and restore the timestamp and open date- and location-based timelines. You can choose not to show it again or restore it through Reset Tips in Settings.

4. Enhanced custom metadata pop-ups
You can enable and configure custom pop-ups directly from the metadata editor. Labels can now be hidden individually while keeping their values visible, allowing more information to fit on the screen.

5. Improved WebDAV, SFTP, and SMB widget compatibility
Photos from folders selected on WebDAV, SFTP, and SMB servers now display and refresh correctly in widgets, just like FTP.

6. Faster widget photo preparation
When selecting a widget folder or opening the app from a widget, only the required photos are retrieved instead of scanning every thumbnail.

### 13.3 — 2026-08-19

1. Improved timeline loading speed and reduced stuttering when scrolling through large photo libraries.

2. Metadata Scan now shows progress while preparing and during post-scan cleanup, so the app no longer appears to be unresponsive.

3. Improved the speed of search, filtering, and sorting in folders containing many photos and files.

4. Offline folder data from earlier versions is now automatically migrated to a faster and more reliable database format.

5. Fixed an issue where some photo information labels appeared as internal names instead of properly localized text when long-pressing in the viewer.

6. Optimized thumbnail information storage to reduce unnecessary processing and improve reliability.

7. Improved memory management by safely clearing unnecessary image data when the app enters the background or available memory is low.

8. Database Optimization can now be safely run again from Diagnostics after restoring a backup created with an earlier version.

### 13.2 — 2026-08-18

1. Fixed an issue where thumbnail generation could stop after processing only a few items on FTP and WebDAV servers.

2. Improved thumbnail generation to detect EXIF orientation and correctly rotate thumbnails when the original image contains rotation information.

3. Added in-app language selection and support for 32 languages.

4. Interrupted uploads from the app or Shortcuts can now resume using the items from the most recent upload.

5. Optimized memory usage during large backups and restores.

6. Improved the reliability of metadata and settings restoration and database index rebuilding when restoring existing backups.

7. Unified the thumbnail storage usage shown in Settings and the server list, and improved the cleanup of unnecessary database entries after metadata scans.

8. The slideshow now remembers the positions of the current time and photo information separately for portrait and landscape modes and keeps them within the screen.

9. Fixed other bugs and improved overall usability.

### 13.1 — 2026-08-17

1. Improved Timeline Viewer Stability
Fixed blank screens when switching between Year, Month, and Day views in the location timeline, as well as crashes when opening Timeline Viewer.

2. Improved Thumbnail Generation Order
The original file order is maintained while generating folder thumbnails. Capture-date sorting is applied after the task finishes or stops, and folders with thumbnails now appear first.

3. Database-Based Performance Optimization
Capture dates, locations, the thumbnail cache index, and the timeline catalog now use a more efficient database. Existing data is migrated once from the server list and safely resumes if interrupted. Backup, Restore, and Metadata Scan also use the new database.

4. Improved Metadata Scan
Quickly scans capture dates and locations for photos and videos with thumbnails. If an original file is unavailable, the scan continues with the remaining items.

5. Improved Full Thumbnail Generation
Optimized memory usage during large thumbnail jobs and fixed FTP connections remaining idle after completion. Screen brightness and the generation screen have also been improved.

6. Added Instant Thumbnail Ultra
Ultra reads more source data to improve thumbnail generation success for difficult files. Low, High, and Ultra use the same final thumbnail dimensions and storage quality.

7. Resume Interrupted Uploads
If a regular upload is interrupted, you can resume it using the previously selected items. Files that have since been deleted from the device are skipped automatically.

8. Improved Original Photo Loading
Improved reliability when downloading and switching from a thumbnail to the original photo.

9. Improved Slideshow Information
The current song title briefly appears when the music changes. Capture date, time, and location can also be displayed and moved by dragging.

10. Redesigned Custom Popup Settings
Updated the layout for Light and Dark Mode, removed unnecessary background decorations, and reorganized the default EXIF and IPTC field order.
