春のある日、少年は川辺で一匹の小さなカメを見つけた。最初はただ眺めているだけだったが、気づけばそのカメを家に連れて帰っていた。名前を考えたとき、なぜかふざけた気持ちになってしまい、「うんこにくっついてたはなくそ」と名付けた。ひどい名前だったけれど、少年にとってはそれも愛着のひとつだった。

最初は小さくて頼りなかったカメも、毎日世話をするうちに少しずつ大きくなっていった。水を替えたり、エサをあげたり、学校から帰ると必ず様子を見に行く。どんなに嫌なことがあった日でも、そのカメを見ていると不思議と気持ちが落ち着いた。

やがて少年は成長し、忙しい日々を送るようになる。それでも、家に帰れば変わらずそこに「うんこにくっついてたはなくそ」がいた。ゆっくりと首を伸ばし、のんびりと動くその姿は、昔と何も変わらないようでいて、少しずつ年を重ねていた。

何年も何年も一緒に過ごし、少年が大人になった頃、カメの動きはだいぶ遅くなっていた。エサを食べる量も減り、水の中でじっとしている時間が増えていく。それでも、少年が近づくと、わずかに顔を上げるその仕草は変わらなかった。

ある静かな日、カメはいつものように動かず、ただ穏やかな顔でじっとしていた。少年はすぐにそれが別れの時だとわかった。「うんこにくっついてたはなくそ」と呼んでみても、もう返事はなかった。

少年はしばらくその場に座り、これまでの時間を思い出していた。ふざけてつけた名前も、いつの間にか大切な思い出になっていた。

やがてカメをそっと土に還し、少年――いや、もう大人になった彼は、静かに空を見上げた。あの小さな出会いから始まった時間は、短いようでとても長く、そして確かに心の中に残り続けていた。
