## What is Torus Games?

Nine familiar games introduce children ages 10 and up to the mind-stretching possibility of a “multiconnected universe”. Games include: tic-tac-toe, mazes, crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, chess, pool and gomoku. While playing the games, kids develop an intuitive visual understanding of a model universe that is finite yet has no boundary. Players who master the games in 2D may enjoy the extra challenge of solving 3D mazes and playing 3D tic-tac-toe in multiconnected 3D spaces. Even though the games were designed with kids in mind, adults interested in topology, geometry and cosmology have also found them enjoyable and enlightening.

## Key features

- Multiconnected universe exploration
- Familiar games with educational twist
- 2D and 3D game modes
- Develops spatial reasoning
- Topology and geometry concepts
- Suitable for ages 10+

### 5/5 — Fun little game

*2022-10-09*

I had this on my old Android, so it’s nice to be able to get it again on apple. A good little brain workout, with the added bonus that my friends have yet to figure out how I can always win the tic tac toe :P

### 5/5 — Cool

*2019-01-11*

It’s a nice, simple introduction to higher dimension math, but most importantly, it’s fun (even if you already get the concept)

### 5/5 — Great games

*2014-06-25*

I just saw Jeff Weeks give a talk on the shape of space - the title of his book. In it, he used this exact game to demonstrate principles of geometry that could help us understand the universe we live in. For non-mathematicians the game can help give an understanding of how different spaces behave, and add to that how fun and well made these games are and you have something that is well worth downloading.

Also - includes other two and three dimensional models e.g., Klein bottle.

Thanks Jeff!

### 5/5 — Thanks

*2013-01-04*

I have used the Shape of Space program in my classroom and LOVE that the students can now access the games on iPads. Thanks for making such a great learning tool and making it available for free!

### 3/5 — Uhhhhhh

*2012-08-08*

The game boards never end and of you get the game you will understand, it is super awkward to play any game and that is it, it would be a better game without the. Repeating game boards!

### 5/5 — Klein Bottle

*2012-05-22*

Amazing collection of board games on a torus and klein bottle.

### 5/5 — Mind bending versions to old games

*2012-02-02*

Just when you thought tictactoe was easy, the rotating board changes everything. Try the Klein Bottle version of pool and the ball's path is no longer predictable. Chess is so much more challenging. Give it a try.

v 5.9.1: Works around bug on A9/A10 devices (details below), thanks to Alex Jacoby.
v 5.9.0:
- Chess algorithm now 100 times as fast as old algorithm. (Reason: when searching for a move, it now uses “αβ pruning” in its search tree.) Offers “Extra Hard” difficulty level.
- Gomoku algorithm now plays better and runs 1000 times as fast as old algorithm. (Reasons: more efficient data structures, increased search depth, and “αβ pruning”.) Offers “Extra Hard” difficulty level.
- Supports Wide Color displays.
- Minor aesthetic improvements.

v 5.9.1 details:
Replaced an 8-bit unsigned integer with a 16-bit unsigned integer to work around a bug in the A9 and A10 GPU's handling of the former, which had led to incorrectly displayed walls in Torus Games maze when running on devices with A9 and A10 processors. Many thanks to Alex Jacoby for reporting this bug.
