Guess what!? Icons for connecting to my device appeared. Works as advertised at that point. No where did I see that the iPad needs to be in landscape mode. So many hours wasted. I did raise my original review from 1 star, but because of that 3 is the max I can do. The instructions are not clear and just a ton to sift through saying need install bridge, click icons that are not there. I’ve bought the app 3 times for different venues. The only gap I’ve found, is being able to access the values of one control, from the script of a different control. For example, I want to create a toggle switch using a radio - then in another control such as a button, read the radio value in the buttons script, and send a different OSC message depending on the state of the radio control. I believe the developer commented on wanting to implement something along these lines in future, but that was ~5 years ago. Hoping we get this “cross-control scripting” at some point. Even if it was just in the form of being able to set global variables that can be accessed and updated from multiple controls. The state could be managed that way. It’s completely customisable and configurations can be adapted to your desired outcomes especially, if you know what you’re doing when it comes to midi. They could probably make the process a bit more easier especially when it comes to mass editing. However I’ve been pleased with it so far. I don’t even take my midi controller for ableton to gigs anymore. Although the app recognizes the computer's IP and appears connected, it does not send MIDI information. ### 5/5 — Does everything I wanted it to *2025-03-11, version 1.3.9* I needed to create a simple 2-fader controller on an old iPhone, to use as a modulation and expression controller on my keyboard. I was able to achieve that in 15 minutes (though it could have been less had I just read the instructions from the start). ### 5/5 — Completely changed my workflow! *2025-02-18* The potential for this software can make one’s head spin, but it has become an irreplaceable part of my process for everything from Adobe to Ableton, to simple admin stuff. The interface itself is a bit clunky, but easy to get used to once you understand it. I wish I could do more batch-level updates on different settings, like changing the size of buttons or adjusting midi settings, but hey! It’s still incredible. ### 3/5 — Fazit *2024-09-17* Rein technisch eröffnet das Tool tolle Möglichkeiten zur Erstellung komplexer Nutzeroberflächen aber das GUI der App ist leider (noch?) nicht zu Ende gedacht. 1. Der Document Tree macht einen völlig irre, da sich das Scrolling scheinbar wahllos selbstständig macht und hin und her springt. 2. Die Bedienung ist nicht PEN orientiert. Bei der Anwahl von Elementen mit dem Stift, reagiert die Oberfläche unvorhersehbar und springt ebenfalls hin und her. 3. Der Sync von Layouts die auf der Cloud liegen ist nicht möglich. Man muss immer über Import und Export gehen. Ein Realtime Browser für Projekte wäre wirklich hilfreich für Teamarbeit 4. Customer Designs für Fader, Knobs, Buttons, Hintergründe usw. wäre sehr sehr wünschenswert. 5. Sehr wichtig wäre auch eine Export/Compiling Funktion, die ein Projekt in eine eigenständige App ermöglicht. Für Hersteller von Hardware oder Software wäre es sehr zielführend, wenn man mit TouchOSC eigene Oberflächen erstellen könnte, die auch unabhängig vom Touch OSC Editor laufen. Vielleicht lassen sich diese Ideen ja zeitnah umsetzen. ### 2/5 — Technisch gut aber modernes Interface Handling sieht anders aus *2024-07-29* An sich macht alles was es soll, aber das Handling im Editor ist nicht intuitiv und es fehlen Funktionen die man bei moderner GUI/UI Software erwartet. Hauptsächlich geht es mir dabei ums Snapping. Zum Beispiel gibt es Grid Snapping, aber so wie ich es verstehe keine Möglichkeit das zu kleine Grid zu ändern. Vielleicht ist es irgendwo versteckt, ich finde es nicht. Intelligentes Snapping an andere Elemente existiert nicht. Hat man ein Interface gebaut und will die Eigenschaften von einem Element ändern, muss es entsperrt sein. Ein Klick zu viel und schon ist das Interface wieder zerstört. Hier wäre ein Position Lock hilfreich. Die Gesamtheit dieser Problemchen führt dazu, dass das Editieren von Interfaces am iPad zur Friemelei wird. Schade. ### 4/5 — Technisch tolles Tool, Dokumente-Sync und Interface leider nicht so *2024-05-12* Das Tool ist technisch toll, aber leider muss ich das nicht vorhandene Dokumentenhandling und die sperrigen Design-Entscheidungen kritisieren. Ich weiß, man kann sogar ein Interface auf ein anderes Gerät "schicken", aber ich schaffe es z.B. nicht effizient, meine gespeicherten Layouts auf dem Mac, iPad und iPhone zu syncen bzw. zu editieren. Mit iCloud kein Problem, denkt man. Aber der Umweg über Import und Export ist leider extrem verwirrend und langsam durch x Taps und Einstellungen. Auch gibt es hierzu keine ausreichende Dokumentation. Überhaupt könnte die App eine/n professionelle Interface-Designer gut gebrauchen: die Icons helfen bei der Verständlichkeit wenig (bsp: Link-Icon für Remote Interface-Sync) und es würde der App sehr gut tun, wenn sich das Interface mehr an gängigen und etablierten Interaktionskonventionen orientieren würde. Gerade als Gelegenheitsuser verbrennt man an dem eigenwilligen Interface viel Zeit. Da geht noch was 👍 ### 5/5 — Great support *2024-05-05, version 1.3.2* Hexler’s support team rocks. I had a problem with connecting the XY pad via OSC to the Ableton Max for Live Connection kit. They were very patient and sent me a complete walk through with screen shots and everything! Thank you guys! ### 4/5 — It’s good when you start to understand… *2024-04-20, version 1.3.1* I’m using it alongside Audiobus 3 and StreamByter to connect keyboards to each other (via a USB MIDI interface) and to iPad instruments. I reckon you need all three of these to be completely versatile. The keyboards I am connecting are limited in their facilities and these three apps compensate for that and allow me to play iPad sounds as well, with everything under control. The manual is factually correct, but it’s one of those that you only understand after you *really* understand. It’s not a how-to guide, it’s a reference. I recommend YouTube videos by Tim Corpus, which explain TouchOSC in some detail. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — A nightmare… *2025-11-26* … to set this up. Not recommended if you are a fairly normal computer friendly user. Auf dem iPad/iPhone: Fehlanzeige. Das macht die ganze App gerade für mobile (!) Geräte im Moment ziemlich wertlos. Den ipad über 1000 Dongles, Adapter und Interfaces an das zu steuernde Pedalboard zu hängen widerspricht doch komplett dem Konzept eines _mobilen_ Endgerätes. Hinzu kommt, dass der Entwickler sich bei Fragen ins gepflegte Schweigen hüllt. Natürlich kann man über Umwege die App zu BT-MIDI bringen, aber mal ehrlich: das ist sowas von 20. Jahrhundert. Bei einer Freeware könnte ich diesen Mangel verstehen. Bei einer kostenpflichtigen App ist das Fehlen eines solchen wichtigen Features ein KO-Kriterium. Ich kann diese App beim besten Willen nicht empfehlen. Ce qui permettrait de faire des prototypes d’applications pour iOS par exemple. ### 5/5 — Reliable toolset for many years *2025-06-06* A decade later and I still use TouchOSC for building out interfaces to control generative graphics systems. First with Apple’s much-missed Quartz Composer, now Unity and Vuo. Everything from app prototyping to running live event graphics. TouchOSC definitely has more power than I make use of, but I do depend on the more advanced customisation of Lua scripting to build out items like multi-coloured radio button sets out of individual buttons. Super helpful for making interfaces more foolproof and readable. I think my main request is for more scripting documentation and examples, especially targeted for beginners. The current documentation is a little sparse and difficult to figure out, especially for non-programmers interested in an easier system to use when creating procedural experiences. The supported feature set appears to be a subset of Lua, and not everything you’ll find for Lua training online will be applicable. I really appreciate the developers continuing to support this tool for so long, and I really hope support continues!
