This uses VNC, which is usually used for screen sharing. Your computer will think that you are sharing video, and the copyright protection will be triggered, causing a blank screen. If you aren’t using it for that, you will probably love it because it works great otherwise. I bought it specifically for my media center (computer with streaming service) so I am disappointed. I wish the developer would point this out so I didn’t waste my money. ### 4/5 — Nice app *2018-11-28, version 6.3.2* A little confusing for me to get installed right, but works well. **Developer response:** Hi! Many thanks! ### 4/5 — Best lightweight remote control *2012-05-29, version 4.1* Without the need for any extra applications, helpers, or system daemons, TouchPad has been my primary remote control for years. Just start up screen sharing on your mac, connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch...and that's it. Connections are remembered, and can automatically re-connect whenever you open the app (perfect for the mac I'm using as a home theatre system). It does seem to crash rather often when switching applications quickly; my guess is that the VNC re-connection is a bit flaky, but it's otherwise pretty reliable. Oh, and on the iPhone, the keyboard button at the top left is really hard to hit. It would make much more sense to move it to the bottom bar, which is where the keyboard appears anyway - streamlining the UI to a single bottom bar would be appreciated. ### 5/5 — Amazing app *2012-03-27, version 4.0.2* This makes everything easier. This is the best app, I have a PC and I control it with with my iPad 3. With gestures it makes the pc feel a little bit like a Mac which is amazing. It is better then a mouse, and keyboard with the voice dictation. This app is a peak at the future of how people use their computers. After I finish my degree I really hope I can work on products or technology improving upon this. Just remember there're things you have to do your computer before you start using this app so just go to the help screen to figure out what you have to do. You have to download a program for it to work on PC. It's easier If you have a Mac (I had to try it on my wife's MacBook Pro) you just have to go to settings and fix it there. I really like the fact that they went the extra mile to make the connection password-protected since you are in a sense allowing something to take complete control of your computer. ### 5/5 — Good for text-to-speech *2012-02-06, version 4.0.1* I'm using this as a text-to-speech converter. Using the Siri command on the keyboard works perfectly for using Apple's native text-to-speech capabilities on the iPhone 4S to get text onto my Mac. It is much cheaper than competing software for this purpose, and the only weaknesses are with Apple's text recognition, and these should improve over time. I don't use the other features though, but for this it is certainly worth $5. ### 5/5 — This is seriously amazing *2012-01-03, version 4.0.1* I am absolutely stunned with the functionallity of this app; it is so cool to be able to use my iPhone as an external trackpad for my MacBook, not to mention keyboard too. I am actually typing this review with this app as it is connected to my MacBook! It works very fast over Wi-Fi with very little delay—but I would really like for this app to work over Bluetooth for faster response and connectivity when I am not in range of Wi-Fi, other than that this is an amazing app. Five stars. ### 4/5 — Deleting and reinstalling the app fixed it *2011-12-26, version 4.0.1* I have moved my review up to 4 stars now because I got it working again. When I upgraded to their latest release, the app completely stopped working for me. I tried several things, but what finally worked was uninstalling the app, which wiped my data off my iPad, and downloading again. I had to set up my accounts again but it works fine now. I tried to find better apps in the meantime for controlling my TV Mac Mini but this still seems to be the best. I wish that they would spend 10 minutes on their release notes and say something more than "bug fixes". ### 5/5 — Works great on both iPhone 3GS and iPad 2 *2011-11-06, version 3.7.1* I have had the Hippo remote (and love it too) but it doesn't have an iPad version. After a little searching I found this. I was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews but I liked the interface and thought I'd give it a shot. FYI: for those having connection issues... Out of pure laziness I tried using the Hippo VNC client, rather than down load a new one, it worked like a charm on the first connection attempt. ### 4/5 — Don't listen to the haters. *2011-09-06, version 3.7* Tried a few other free versions on the app store and I was unimpressed. I found this one and although the reviews were less than generous I visited the website and after 5 minutes I was comfortable with the purchase. I had an issue with the keyboard crashing the app. After another 2 minutes on the website the problem was resolved. Nothing but satisfaction since. To those having difficulties, visit the support site and chances are it won't be a difficulty much longer. The support staff is friendly and knowledgeable. To the developers, thanks and I can't wait for the update to integrate the workarounds into the app and everyone realizes this is a valuable piece of software. Using with Snow Leopard and iOS 4. ### 5/5 — Please dig deeper people... *2011-09-04, version 3.7* Love the app, but a lot of users don't check the support/forums and just complain in the reviews. If you check the support page, you'll see that there's a known issue with the current version, easily solved (if you read). The Apple app update review process takes a week or so, so they might be on top of this already. Just letting y'all know that there's an easy solution to the problem (if you seek it out), so less of the "complain first, questions later" attitude, amiright? Have a great day! ### 1/5 — New version screwed everything up ! *2011-12-05, version 4.0* The last version of touchpad worked great, connected without problems to my PC and Mac - loved it....... After I updated to the latest version nothing is working anymore - I do not know what they did, but they changed the whole connection procedure and it is not working anymore at all. I expect that when you update an app that is working well that you do not have to reconfigure everything. I am extremely disappointed because I was just about to sit down to do some work and I can not get anything done. Very disappointed with the new Version !!! ### 1/5 — Still not working in Lion *2011-08-08, version 3.6.1* I downloaded the update, did several reboots of both my iPad and my iMac (running Lion 10.7) and it's not working. Worked perfectly before the Lion update but now - nothing. :( I did configure the sharing preferences, of course, and I don't have any firewall issues or whatever. Just isn't quite compatible yet. I used to use this app every single day to help increase the efficiency in my work and now I'm a tad restricted without being able to use the app. App says it's connect to my computer but no icon in the task bar and no movement from the cursor. If it's me and not the app - could someone put together a more detailed description of what to do to set it up? I've followed the directions exactly as I did before with Snow Leopard and nothing has worked. :( ### 2/5 — Themes Removed? *2016-05-21, version 6.0.1* Pls return theme options back as they were offered once. It only makes paying customers more apprehensive about 'updating' or continuing further business. ### 2/5 — A few things missing *2014-06-17, version 5.0.0* I'm happy to see this app finally get an update. I use it quite a bit. It's the best option I have found that doesn't require a third party app on the computer side. Unfortunately we are losing key functionality with this update. As another reviewer posted, we definitely need the full screen trackpad functionality back. The keyboard needs to minimize down to just the special keys as it did before. A second tap on the top bar keyboard tab would be the most obvious way to achieve this. Also the themes aren't working properly. Theme changes won't stick and the light theme isn't consistent and is buggy. ### 2/5 — This WAS great, but keyboard support went away *2013-11-02, version 4.3.5* Okay, what I want to do is have a Mac Mini I watch TV on, and not bother having a keyboard. I want to control my Mac Mini sometimes using TouchPad, doing mouse and clicking effects but also typing passwords when installing software. I *want* to be able to type on a Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad, and have the text show on the Mac Mini that’s being controlled. This used to work, I think, but now it does not, due to some new issues with iOS. I don’t appreciate having barriers erected between what I want to do with my iPad and Mac, at every turn. Please bring back Bluetooth keyboard-through-controlled Mac support, or bring it to us if it wasn’t with us in iOS 6.x. Then you will get 5 stars again. ### 3/5 — No gestures *2019-01-09, version 6.3.2* Even after you are turning off my gesture settings on my iPad and Mac, I cannot get the gestures to work on my Mac. Apple Pencil support is a joke. Tap tap tap... for a single click action. ### 3/5 — Documentation is spotty *2012-03-12, version 4.0.2* For everyone who is having issues with connection, make sure you log in with the FULL user name when connecting to Lion. For example, with Snow Leopard and before, you would have the Full User name of Bob Barker, and a short name of bobbarker (no spaces all lowercase). With Lion, the short name is not valid when connecting as a Macintosh Login, you would want to use the Full Name, with spaces and capitalization. Also, verify in Remote Management that the user you are trying to connect to has access or that All users is selected. Hey Edovia.. how's about you work on your documentation and support? No game show hosts were harmed in the typing of this review. Review done on my MBP, using the app to type. ### 3/5 — Mediocre at best *2012-02-14, version 4.0.1* Maybe it's good for the average user but I expected more from this app. Essentially it is a keystroke simulator, and even at that it isn't very good. Mouse updating is stupidly slow (there is no reason it should be slow at all). And for things such as the media player…. all the PLAY/PAUSE button does is simulate the space bar - so if iTunes is not the foreground application, then it simulates space bar for whatever applications that it is in (again stupid). On top of the fact that you can't set the keystrokes that the three and four finger gestures simulate makes things very frustrating. I use COMMAND + ARROW KEYS to navigate between spaces not CONTROL + ARROW KEYS (I can't customize this in the application which is AGAIN STUPID). All of this in my humble opinion is the result of very poor programming. The only thing that I can give them props for is that they actually tried adding three finger and four finger gestures which cannot be said for many other alternatives. I would say the app is really worth about $1.99 at best. ### 3/5 — Nice at first… then you use it. *2011-07-29, version 3.6* I was hoping to find something that would be a ginormous trackpad to replace my mouse. I like the gestures in Lion, and have gotten used to them when work gin on my MacBook Pro's trackpad. I don't want to drop the $$$ on a trackpad, so for $4.99 this seemed like a good idea. Connection was easy, and within minutes of purchase I had my mouse pointer moving all over the place on the screen. The trouble presented itself when I started trying to use gestures. The app only supports four-finger expose gestures of swipe up and swipe down. These can be re-mapped to keys on the Mac so that swipe up is one four-finger gesture, and swipe down is another, but it's counter intuitive when you're using Swipe Left and Swipe Right on the mac to go to different desktops. Also, the thumb & three-finger pinch to launch launchpad doesn't work. Saying this app "fully supports Lion" is a bit of a mis-leading statement. Does it work with Lion: yes. Does it fully support Lion: no. Also, after about 5 minutes of use, I started getting really bad lag between the iPad and my Mac. For an app that was really neat for the first two minutes, it went downhill quickly after 5. I'm disappointed by that result, especially now that my wallet is $4.99 lighter. Hopefully the developer will address these concerns in a future update, but for now this app will be relegated to my "Unused" group on the iPad. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Use it everyday with home theater Mac Mini *2019-04-22, version 6.3.2* I can’t believe I bought this app in 2009. Great for controlling a home theater computer. Had a problem a couple years ago (forgetting the password if it couldn’t connect on the first try), let the developer know, and it was fixed immediately in the next update. My only request would be a super-extra dark grey-on-black mode that is nearly invisible in a dark room / theater. The red and black theme is super cool but still a little distracting to leave on all the time during movies. Thanks for a great app! ### 5/5 — Fantastic app! *2018-06-18, version 6.2.5* I love the app. My only qualm is that I think it’s a little bit of a missed opportunity not having a few buttons for things like Mute, or Sleep, for example. It looks like this aims to work as a remote, so these things would go a long way. It finds the computer on the local network, asks for credentials, and lets your control it. Using my iPad, this is easier with better control than the wireless mouse and keyboard. I haven't tried all of the key extra control keys in the app, but the touchpad is great, catching and dragging items is easier than with my mouse. People, take your issues to support! Thanks for a great, free, app. ### 5/5 — Best of class, in a saturated field *2014-10-25, version 5.1.1* There are too many wireless trackpad/keyboard apps. This is the best. It works exactly the way it should without installing any software on your Mac. (You can even adjust the cursor sensitivity and change the scrolling direction from within the app!) To be perfect, I would ask for the following minor improvements: 1. Add support for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus screen resolutions so the app better makes use of these screens. 2. Dismiss the “Authenticating” popup faster (after locking with the app open, then unlocking, you can actually control the cursor and keyboard before the popup is gone. I’d rather this dialogue be turned into a dropdown info bar, like the “Connected to Computer” bar. 3. If possible, maintain a persistent connection using a background service so “Authentication” is not necessary after locking/unlocking or switching apps. Excellent App, worth every penny! ### 5/5 — One of my Fav Apps! Use it everyday. *2014-06-17, version 5.0.0* Where are all the latest reviews? I've been using this app for over a couple of years now. I steam from a laptop on to my HD TV screen. Yes, I use Roku of course too. But something's, like online classes etc I need my laptop for. This app makes it simple, simple, simple to control my closed laptop. So I can control the tv screen. Love. I'm really loving the new look today too! ### 5/5 — Great for my Mac mini TV setup *2013-05-14, version 4.3.2* I've been using this app for years to control the Mac mini that runs our entertainment system. It's installed on evereyone's iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, so it's always handy and connects quickly to the mini. Special keys like Escape, Command, Shift, Control and cursor arrows are always on screen. The keyboard can be visible or hidden. (One wish: bigger target for keyboard button on an iPhone screen) I also use the app to control an old iMac we use in the bedroom, and TouchPad easily switches between the systems. Having dropped our cable subscription several years ago, this app is indispensable. ### 5/5 — Saved my life! *2012-09-22, version 4.2.1* I run huge sessions in ProTools on my MacBook Pro - I used to use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, but it eats up so much CPU my sessions kept overloading, with all the plugins I run. finally, my bluetooth stopped working altogether. Rather than bring my Mac in, I decided to find a new solution - lo and behold, TouchPad! Now I can run huge sessions with my MBP in clamshell mode, hooked up to my TV, without overloading my system! Bluetooth never worked too well to begin with. The feature I'm waiting for (and would happily help design) is the ability to download custom keymaps or skins, much like the ones they have preloaded for for iTunes, Front Row, Boxee. etc. This way, I could use my iPad as a keyboard-focus command module for ProTools, making my workflow that much faster, and more visually organized! Altogether an amazing app that works flawlessly for me, on both my iPhone and iPad, running Mountain Lion. The people complaining need to understand that when a new OS version rolls out, it's up to the user to wait to upgrade until they're sure all their software will be compatible.
