## What is Transcribe Audio Text?

A recording on your iPhone or iPad, in 100 languages, becomes a transcript you can search, edit and quote. Kayit runs on-device transcription models from Apple, NVIDIA and Whisper, so nothing is sent away to be transcribed, analyzed or logged.

Transcription, editing and text export are free, with no time limit. Kayit Pro adds what is built around the words: speaker separation and quotes that carry their audio.

Built for journalists, researchers, lawyers and clinicians: anyone whose work can't leave the device it was recorded on.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN

• The audio and the transcript stay in Kayit's own folder on the device
• No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no servers to receive anything
• One switch keeps your library out of iCloud Backup

FREE: TRANSCRIBE

• Three on-device engines: Apple, Parakeet and Whisper, chosen per recording for the right accuracy, speed and language
• Pick the language first; an engine that can't handle it is disabled and says why
• Send a recording from any app's Share menu, including Voice Memos
• MP3, M4A, WAV, AIFF, FLAC and most common audio and video formats; from a video Kayit takes only the audio
• Your library is in Files, under On My iPhone or On My iPad, so recordings go in and transcripts come out without Kayit in the way
• File interviews into projects, and archive a project when the story is filed

FREE: PLAY BACK AND EDIT

• The current word highlights as it plays, and the transcript scrolls to keep up
• Waveform scrubbing, 0.5x to 2x speed and 10-second skip; tap the elapsed time to jump anywhere
• Search the transcript and set the reading size
• Edit the text where you read it: fix a name, split or merge paragraphs
• Timestamps survive edits, so playback and quotes stay aligned
• Name the speakers yourself, a paragraph at a time
• Export the whole transcript as plain text, free and unlimited

KAYIT PRO: SPEAKERS

• Automatic speaker separation: each voice is labeled Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on; rename one and it applies everywhere
• Two separation methods: run it again with the other if the first drew the lines wrong, and your text corrections survive
• Save samples of your voice, and Kayit names you automatically in every interview after that

KAYIT PRO: QUOTES

• Select a passage, and Kayit saves the text, the speaker and its exact audio span
• Share a quote as text, Markdown or CSV, or with the trimmed audio clip it was taken from

KAYIT PRO: EXPORT MORE

• Export as PDF, Rich Text, Markdown, CSV or SubRip subtitles (.srt), with timestamps
• Send a whole interview to a colleague, transcript and audio in one zip, or AirDrop it to Kayit on your Mac

SUBSCRIPTION

Kayit is free to download, and transcription, editing and text export stay free with no time limit. Every section above marked Kayit Pro needs an auto-renewing subscription, which starts with a 14-day free trial. One subscription covers Kayit on iPhone, on iPad and on the Mac.

• Kayit Pro Monthly: $4.99 USD / month
• Kayit Pro Annual: $49.99 USD / year

Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the period ends. Manage or cancel anytime in your Apple Account settings.

FIRST LAUNCH

Kayit downloads each model the first time it needs it, then runs offline. Parakeet is about 500 MB and Whisper about 600 MB; Apple's engine uses a system language pack iOS downloads.

WHAT KAYIT DOES NOT DO

Kayit does not record: bring a recording in from Voice Memos, from Files or from another app. The on-device AI insights are on the Mac and the iPad, not on the iPhone. Voice samples are per device and do not sync.

REQUIREMENTS

• iPhone running iOS 26 or later
• iPad running iPadOS 26 or later, with 8 GB of memory or more for the larger models

## Pricing and in-app purchases

Base price: Free.

**Subscriptions**

| Subscription | Price | Period |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kayit Pro (Monthly) | $4.99 | per month |
| Kayit Pro (Annual) | $49.99 | per year |

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-18

Search inside every interview at once. Type in the library's search field and Kayit looks through the transcripts themselves, not just their names: you get the line that matched, who said it and when, and tapping a result takes you to that moment in the recording. Archived interviews are searched too, in a section of their own.

Learn the app on a real interview. Kayit comes with a short one, already transcribed, so there is something to tap before you have a recording of your own. Open it from the empty library and it copies in like any other import: quote it, edit it, rename it or throw it away.

A getting started checklist that ticks itself. Kayit lists the few things worth trying on a real interview, and a row ticks when you do it, never when you read it. Hide it whenever you like, or bring it back from Settings.

The word highlight keeps up. It follows the screen's own refresh now instead of a timer the rest of the screen could crowd out, so playback stops skipping ahead while the app is busy.

A long word stays inside the column. A web address, or any long word once you turn the reading size up, was drawn past the edge of the reading column instead of being fitted into it. On iPad, the same fix keeps the Insights pane from growing wider than its limit when a speaker's name is long.

On iPad, stray asterisks no longer turn up inside a summary point. The model writes a bolded lead-in and the closing pair was reaching the Insights panel in the middle of the sentence.

### 1.2.5 — 2026-09-16

Keep your interviews out of iCloud Backup. Settings has a Privacy switch that leaves your recordings, transcripts and voice samples out of the backup, so no copy of them reaches Apple. It starts off, because the backup is also how you get your library back if the phone is lost or replaced: turn it on for a story where that trade goes the other way, and export anything you cannot lose.

Export as PDF or Rich Text. A Kayit PDF opens with a title block naming the interview, who is in it and how long it runs, and every page is footed with the name and the page number, so a transcript can be filed or handed over as a document. Rich Text takes it into Pages, Word or Google Docs with the speakers and timestamps already styled.

Take your quotes out in a shape something else can read. A quote list exports as Markdown or as a CSV table, one row per quote across a whole project, and a project's quotes file is real Markdown: every passage a blockquote under the name of the interview it came from.

On iPad, leave a speaker out of the summary. Choose who the summary covers from the Summary tab: drop the interviewer and it summarizes what your source said, not the questions. Everything is still read for context, so the answers keep their meaning.

Also on iPad, Regenerate now sits in the tab you are reading, and the age beside it is that tab's. The line under the panel used to report the age of the last Newsworthy run no matter which tab you were on, so regenerating a summary appeared to do nothing.

And on iPad, a long interview gets the same summary a short one does: four to six points either way, where a long transcript used to come back with eleven. If the sections it was summarized in cannot be combined, the Summary tab says so instead of leaving you to notice the repeats.

### 1.2.4 — 2026-09-14

Projects. File your interviews into named projects and archive a project when the story is filed. A project is a folder in your library, so your filing is the same in Kayit, in Finder and in a backup, and nothing moves unless you ask. Choose New Project from the File menu, drag an interview onto a project in the sidebar, or use Move to Project from a row.

One roster for a whole project. Naming a speaker now offers the names you have already used in that project's other interviews, so a source you have interviewed six times is spelled the same way six times.

Every quote in a project, in one place. Open a project's quotes to see every passage you have saved across its interviews, and export them together.

A project keeps its own notes. The running list of what you still need lives in the project as a plain Markdown file, so you can open it in Finder or in your notes app as well as in Kayit.

Send a whole project. Export a project the way you export an interview, audio and transcripts together, and open it on another Mac.

Filter the sidebar. Type in the field below the list to find an interview by name, wherever it is filed, including inside an archived project.

Rename an interview. Choose Rename Interview from the row menu in Recent or All Interviews, or from the Transcribe window, and Kayit moves the recording and everything saved beside it: the transcript, your saved quotes and the AI insights.

Correcting a typo no longer discards your insights. Editing a single character used to throw away the summary and every flagged passage for that interview; they now survive the edit and stay on the right words.

Take the insights with you. Copy or share the whole summary as Markdown, or use the context menu on a single point or outline entry to take just that one. A Newsworthy passage copies with its speaker and timestamp, in the same shape a saved quote copies in.

Name what you export. The export sheet now lets you name the text file, the zip or a single audio clip yourself, instead of taking the name Kayit worked out for you.

Insights runs the better model on more Macs. The most capable on-device model needed 24 GB of memory and now needs 16 GB, so on a 16 GB Mac the panel finishes in about two-thirds the time and chooses better. A Mac with 8 GB now runs the mid-sized model, which used to need 14 GB.

More flagged passages, and fewer repeats. The pass that finds striking lines was throwing away about half of what it found, and the summary no longer repeats quotes the Newsworthy list already carries.

Hiding a speaker now hides everything they said. Filtering a speaker out of the Newsworthy list used to leave their own striking lines standing underneath it.

The speaker's name sits above the paragraph now, and appears only where the speaker changes.

The waveform is legible in dark mode again.
