## What is Transcriptionist?

Transcriptionist quickly and privately converts speech from audio recordings — and video soundtracks — into text. Writing up notes for a meeting? Creating transcripts or subtitles for a podcast? Looking for just the right clip to cut out of a long recording? Or quotes for a news article? Need to remember what happened on game night? Or just want to remind yourself of what was said, without listening to the entire recording? Transcriptionist can help — in nearly 100 languages.

Import the audio into the app, tap the transcribe button, and it will start to fill in the text that was spoken. Each piece is shown with a timestamp, and you can jump straight to the matching point in the recording to listen back to the original audio — at up to 2x speed.

If each speaker was recorded with their own microphone, Transcriptionist will track who said what, when — and you can solo individual voices to pick out what someone said, even if another person talked over them.

Copy and paste quotes into an article you're writing, or export the entire transcript in a range of formats, including PDF, HTML (web page), Markdown (blog post), SRT and VTT (subtitles), as well as formats suitable for importing into other apps — you can even create your own custom text-based formats with the built-in easy-to-use visual editor.

If you edit podcasts with our popular Ferrite Recording Studio, you can send your finished Ferrite projects direct to Transcriptionist — along with chapter markers — and each track will be kept separate so you can identify who's speaking.

You can also select paragraphs and export their audio in a choice of formats, suitable for editing in Ferrite or other apps — perfect for when you find the quote or highlight you needed.

Transcription takes place on your device, not on our servers, so no audio or text is sent to us, and subscribers can make as many transcripts as they like — we don't charge per-minute or per-transcript.

### 5/5 — Best Mac App for Transciptions

*2026-05-14*

I use Transcriptionist daily, to transcribe podcasts, YouTube videos, and any audio content. I love being able to choose from various “brains” to balance speed and accuracy, export formats include everything you could need, and it’s on iPhone and iPad as well!

### 4/5 — Unclear how to export

*2025-11-19*

My goal is transcribe audio from meetings with clients into text, then to export said text to private AI to create a summary of the meeting. I love that transcription is handled privately on device, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to export the text. The user guide provides instructions to use the “Export” option in the file menu, which does not seem to exist, nor can I find the option anywhere else. I’ll probably reach out to the developer for support, but it shouldn’t be this hard. Using on an M5 iPad Pro.

**Developer response:** Hello! You can export a transcript from an iPad by first opening the file, then tapping on the Document Menu (this is the one that has the name of the transcript itself, and a little V-shaped down arrow) and picking Export, then the type of file you want to export (HTML, Markdown, CSV, etc). This will open a standard iOS Share Sheet where you can pick where to send the exported file. If you need additional help, please get in touch by email, via the Contact Customer Support link inside the app, as we can’t provide detailed support via App Store review responses (by email, we can do things like send screenshots or dig into technical details if there’s a problem). Thanks!

### 2/5 — Great but..

*2025-10-24*

It’s great at what it does but I think it should have a one time purchase instead considering it does the same job and will always do the same task in the future. Big Ups to making it so apple like tho!

### 3/5 — Not Understanding the High Ratings

*2025-09-09*

Just downloaded and subscribed to this app and right away it repeatedly crashes every time I use the search and replace feature. And why am I having to use the search and replace feature? Because in practically every other sentence there are words that were transcribed incorrectly. The errors are so bad it’s difficult figuring out what was actually said to correct in the transcription. Does it do more than the transcribe feature in Apple Notes and Voice Memos apps? Yes. It will combine multiple separately-recorded audio tracks (say, from a Zoom recording), and include time stamps, allow you to edit/correct it’s errors, change the names it assigns to participants of the audio, etc. - which are all things I need - but with the errors and search/replace (for those errors) crashes make me question whether even the relatively low subscription fee is worth it.

**Developer response:** Hello! I’m sorry to hear that you have encountered a crash while using the search and replace feature. If you get in contact with Customer Support using the link inside the app, we can look into that for you. As far as transcription accuracy goes, no AI transcription is perfect, but Transcriptionist includes a variety of different AI brain sizes — larger ones take up more space and run slower, but provide more accurate transcription — so you can choose the one that suits you best. If your device is powerful enough, we find the “Large (v3 Turbo)” to be a particularly good balance (I use it myself to transcribe hours of audio every week). Hope that helps!

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2025-06-01*

Works on device (resource intensive, that’s normal). Better privacy. For (Canadian) French, it works better with the Large brain than others that do have the Canadian option, as opposed to this one.

### 3/5 — Seeing good progress

*2025-03-21*

Wow, what a few months makes and I'm happy to see some UX improvements. So I'm back to evaluating this application. I would like to see better integration from Ferrite to Transcriptionist. It's also confused why I cannot use large brain on my iPad Pro when I have more than enough on device space. Why tease it and then say I cannot have it? Looking to bump to 4 or 5 star in the future.

**Developer response:** Hello! To be able to use an AI Brain, your device needs two things: enough storage space to download it, and enough working memory (“RAM”) to run it. All iPad Pro models have lots of storage space, so (unless you’ve filled it up, of course) you probably have enough to download even the largest AI Brain. But only some of the latest models have enough working memory for the largest brain. If your device doesn’t have enough working memory for a brain, Transcriptionist won’t waste your storage space and bandwidth downloading something you won’t be able to use. If you believe it has made a mistake about it, please get in touch by email using the Customer Support link inside the app so we can investigate. Thanks!

### 1/5 — How do you use this?

*2024-11-08*

I heard about this app in the iPad Pros podcast and decided to give it a try as I need to transcribe audio and happy to pay for it. Problem is I haven't a clue how this application works. I have an iPad Pros M4 11" w/ 256GB. I record an audio file on Ferrite, but then there is no way to upload it to this app. Author/Dev - please email me when this is a bit more useful, I'd love to try it out.

**Developer response:** Hello! I’m sorry to hear that you have encountered difficulty using Transcriptionist. For assistance with using the app, please contact us directly using the Customer Support link inside the app, or by visiting our website (we have no way of emailing you in reply to App Store reviews, as they’re public, and so don’t include your email address). Thanks!

### 4/5 — Very nice transcription but minor improvement better

*2024-07-24*

Accuracy of transcription is acceptable though sometimes words are missing. It saves a lot of work to clearly understand the speaker.

One improvement I am looking forward to is to collate the transcripted text in a clip with Ferrite so that some words may be positioned in the waveform to facilitate editing the corresponding clip. I mean it would be better to integrate the Transcriptionist
 Into Ferrite, or vice versa.

It is a really good audio editor app!

### 5/5 — Works very well for me

*2024-02-13*

I’ve been running this on my MacBook Pro with the largest model and it’s been great. Very happy with the app.

### 5/5 — Integrate with Ferrite

*2024-01-16*

What I really need and I would LOVE to pay for is a transcribe option in Ferrite!! My dream intergration would be automated "Show Notes" in the notes part of the info panel. Having to send to another app to transcribe and another app to write the show notes is a mess I would pay to get out of!
