HOW IT WORKS

Travel Mapping tracks which highway and rail segments you've traveled by maintaining .list files — simple text files listing your clinched route segments. The community at travelmapping.net processes these files and visualizes your travels on interactive maps.

This app lets you browse that data, track your progress, and generate new .list entries — either by selecting segments on the map or recording GPS road trips that automatically match to TravelMapping routes.

New to Travel Mapping? The app includes a Get Started guide to help you create your username and submit your first .list file.

SUPPORTED REGIONS

Travel Mapping covers highway systems across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Oceania — with nearly 400 regions across 147 countries. Rail and transit networks are also tracked via the companion tmrail.teresco.org database.

OPEN SOURCE & COMMUNITY

Travel Mapping is a volunteer-driven project. Route data, user files, and the web application are all open source and hosted on GitHub. This app connects to the public TravelMapping API — no account creation or personal data collection required.

Privacy: No ads, no third-party analytics. Anonymous diagnostic data — crashes, performance metrics, app hangs, structured logs, screenshots, and short session replays — is collected via Sentry to improve app stability. Your TravelMapping username is the only identifier sent. Location data stays on your device or syncs privately via iCloud.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-07-23

Version 1.2 is the biggest update yet — a top-to-bottom redesign plus major upgrades to maps, trip recording, and reliability.

A FRESH NEW LOOK
- Every screen redesigned: bigger, clearer type, a consistent color system, and full dark-mode polish
- Your profile is now a dashboard — a hero card on the Travelers tab with your rank, regions, and mileage
- Statistics leads with a completion ring showing how much of the network you've clinched
- The Leaderboard gets a podium for the top three, with your own rank pinned at the bottom of the screen

BETTER MAPS
- Untraveled routes are now amber and much easier to see — plus a new visibility slider in Settings > Appearance to tune them to your taste
- New Layers panel collects show/hide toggles, base-map styles, and select mode in one place
- Filter pills with live segment counts, bigger touch-friendly controls, and a redesigned route detail sheet

ROAD TRIP RECORDING
- New dark driving-mode dashboard: a big timer, glanceable speed/distance/segment tiles, and a clear End Trip button
- Live Activity upgrade: distance, speed, and matched segments right on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, with a proper Paused state
- One Start Trip button — choose Road or Rail
- Trip recaps now lead with a full-width route map, show total distance, and make replay a proper control
- Recording is more reliable: trips no longer stop silently after long breaks, paused time doesn't count toward your drive time, and exported .list entries use proper route names

ROUTE PLANNER
- Route options are now cards showing distance, time, and — the important part — how many segments are new to clinch versus already driven
- Respects your miles/kilometers preference throughout

WIDGETS & APPLE WATCH
- Fixed: widgets and the Watch app now show YOUR stats (previously they could show the wrong traveler)
- Correct leaderboard rank, kilometer support, and a completion ring on the circular Lock Screen widget
- Watch app matches the new app design with bigger, clearer numbers

AND MORE
- Redesigned welcome flow with live username checking
- Settings reorganized; the tip jar now lives quietly under Support
- Accessibility: larger touch targets, better VoiceOver support, Reduce Motion respected everywhere
- Dozens of fixes for stats accuracy, offline behavior, iPad layouts, and iCloud sync

Happy clinching!

### 1.1 — 2026-05-11

This release focuses on more reliable trip recording, faster maps, and a smoother feedback flow.

  NEW
  • Trips now auto-resume if the app is force-quit or terminated by iOS — pick up exactly where you left off
  • In-app feedback form for sending bug reports and feature requests directly from Settings

  IMPROVED
  • Sharper GPS segment matching: bearing filter and tighter distance thresholds dramatically reduce false matches
  • Faster map rendering — fixed 6-7 second hangs on large route detail views
  • Route catalog now caches across launches for instant region and route loading
  • .list file sharing uses the native share sheet (fixes the blank sheet on physical iPhone)

  FIXED
  • Three production hangs that could freeze the app under specific conditions
  • Cryptic "JSON parse error" replaced with a clear maintenance-mode message
  • iPhone UI text wrapping issues across several screens
