## What is Tree of Life?

Tree of Life App is an interactive and illustrated family-level phylogeny of living beings based upon a synthesis of data from thousands of published studies from the primary literature. Main groups of organisms –from Bacteria to Vertebrates- are displayed in the initial tree as collapsed branches that can be opened to view family level relationships. Over 7000 families are included in the current version.
The interactivity and contents of Tree of Life App include the following features:
-Zooming in or out in order to explore a very large tree
-Tapping on the pictures to see family details such as common names, and quick links to Wikipedia (internet connection is required for this feature)
-Collapsing clades into single branches to summarize or hide undesired details
-Viewing subtrees of special interest
-A search feature enabling users to find specific organisms either by common or scientific family names
-A time scale to determine divergence dates among lineages and dates of extinction of fossil families
Tree of Life App is constantly being updated to include recent findings, guaranteeing to illustrate the most up-to date state of the art about evolutionary relationships among living beings.

## Key features

- Interactive family tree exploration
- Detailed organism family information
- Zooming and collapsing branches
- Search for specific organisms
- Time scale for divergence dates
- Links to external resources

### 3/5 — Good concept but navigation is clumsy

*2024-10-15*

It would be better if you could search terms from the home tree. For example, searching “Monarda” turns 0 results, so you have to go find plants then narrow it down. It would be a great resource if it wasn’t for that barrier

### 5/5 — Fantastic way of exploring evolutionary relationships

*2024-08-18*

I'm an Environmental Studies undergraduate student looking to go into ecology and evolutionary biology for graduate school. This app is a wonderfully informative and fun way to explore evolutionary relationships and timelines, as well as an incredibly potent visual representation of the diversity of biota. I highly reccomend this app as a way to expand your knowleddge of taxonomy and evolutionary biology for biologists... And I also reccomend it for non-biologists to get a sense of the scale of life on our planet. Hats off to the creators!

### 4/5 — You guys are scary detailed. Kudos

*2024-01-13*

Thanks for all you do in keeping us updated on the Animalia family tree.
The only annoying thing is that too many extinct species don’t show nothing on Wikipedia or Google. Gah lol 😅

### 5/5 — Amazing app

*2023-09-17*

Brilliant app, thank you. I hope development continues.

### 5/5 — Trouble

*2023-01-29*

This app is in trouble. I do a search for Animalia, and it turns up nothing zip nada. What’s up with that?

I was actually looking for a Taxonomy app, not a phylogeny app. I changed my rating to five and deleted the app.

**Developer response:** Hi Bill. This is because the official term we have for animals is "METAZOA". Animalia is just one of its synonyms. I should be able to fix this by enabling the search feature to find synonyms as well. I apologize for the issue

### 5/5 — Good app

*2021-12-20*

I like this ap. I am on n IPad and it shows everything fine

### 4/5 — Update

*2019-08-21*

Still waiting for the update !!

### 4/5 — Excellent!

*2018-06-17*

The amount of information is comprehensive and well organized. If you want to have a better grasp of all living things and their interconnectedness, then I highly recommend this app. It’s worth the $7.
There are a couple things that can
be improved though. It would be cool if there was an option to search for a family from the menu screen and work backwards. I also found that there are some scientific names that are different depending on the academic source (eg: the app uses pinophyta instead of coniferophyta), it would be helpful if the app recognized all additional names that a phylum or family may have as some people may find it hard to navigate when there’s only one accepted name. Scrolling around on the map causes lag and it takes a moment for new areas to load, which doesn’t make the app very fluid. Also hitting the ‘back’ button takes you back to the menu screen (it would be much better for it to return to the last page you were on, it can be a pain to find your way back to where you were looking). Anyway, I’m very happy with the app, these were just a couple peeves that I have. Thanks for all your work!

### 1/5 — Not ready for prime time

*2017-10-06*

This would be better on a much larger display. The design really doesn’t work for small displays.
It’s too slow an navigation is very awkward.

### 5/5 — Wow

*2016-08-23*

What an app. This is the best phylogeny app I could find ANYEHERE. Get it for sure.

- Bugs fixed on the principal search.

### 1.9 — 2017-08-11

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

-New topology of higher level relationships of dinosaurs (Ornithoscelida), after the results of Baron et al. (2017).

-New topology of stem tetrapods and lissamphibians from the studies of Pardo. et al. (2017).

-New topology of extant frogs (Lissamphibia: Anura) based on the phylogenomic analysis by Feng et al. 2017.

-Several topological modifications to some clades of angiosperms based on studies implementing nuclear (rather than plastid) loci.
