## What is TreeScribe?

TreeScribe is the field app of the Savanna Institute's tree crop breeding programs. It gives you the ability to record data on every plant with its accession, its row and position, and its history, so a person walking a planting records what they see against the right plant.

Work it does in the field:

- Photograph a plant and the photo is named for that plant, filed by trial and by day, and sent to your
  program's Google Drive.
- Score traits from your Breedbase trait list, one tap per value.
- Count burs or other fruit on a tree, including a separate count of what is on the ground.
- Record harvest bags against the bush they came from.
- Write or dictate notes about a plant.
- Record a plant's position from a connected GNSS receiver.

It is built for places with no signal. Everything is recorded on the phone and sent when a network appears, and a trial's drone imagery can be downloaded beforehand so the map works with no connection at all.

Access is by invitation: each person is given a personal access code by their breeding program, and the app records nothing without one.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.15 — 2026-10-30

1.15

While surveying a planting whose plant positions were placed from a planting plan or an image, the planned points start hidden, and a Planned points button on the map shows them when you want them; the points you record always show.

The version and build number appear at the top of Help and on the Settings screen.

### 1.14 — 2026-10-29

1.14

On a trial that shares its field with others, the map outlines the trial you are in, names the neighboring trials, and while surveying dims everything outside your trial.

Plant positions placed from a planting plan or an image show as hollow rings until the plant is surveyed, and a plant that replaced a dead one shows as one card with the earlier plant kept under Previous plant here.

Hazelnut trials that are not yet in Breedbase open from the picker, starting with the North Farm plantings and their drone image.

Screen titles say plainly what each screen is, and the welcome tour can be opened again from Help.

### 1.13 — 2026-10-28

1.13

Screen titles say plainly what each screen is, and the welcome tour can be opened again from Help.

A plant that replaced a dead one shows as one card at its position, with the earlier plant kept under Previous plant here.

Hazelnut trials that are not yet in Breedbase open from the picker the way chestnut ones do, starting with the North Farm plantings and their drone image.

Plant positions placed from a planting plan or an image show as hollow rings on the map until the plant is surveyed.

### 1.12 — 2026-10-26

1.12

The Ask control on the plant card sits beside Info, so long plant names no longer wrap.

The assistant's example question reads as an example and clears when you tap the box.

The Help now has a page for each app with a search box, and the field app's Help can answer questions about using the app from the manual.

### 1.10 — 2026-10-24

1.10

Survey asks before saving a point that sits on another plant's recorded spot, naming the distance and the plant, with Save anyway and Discard, so a double press no longer records the next plant at the same place.

A new setting, Start each plant at the first trait, opens the score card on the first trait whenever the plant changes, for crews who score every trait on every plant in the same order. It is off unless you turn it on.

The two Becker hazelnut trials have a map image from the September 2025 drone flight. Open the trial, choose Download map imagery from the menu, and download it over Wi-Fi.
