If we fail a level, there are tickets we can used to get out of trouble (which I guess cost money after the initial 20) but we can also simply start the level again. After a while the boards do feel pretty repetitive. My only real complaint is that the boards are huge - hundreds of tiles - but the game does not let us work part way and save progress to pick up later.
