The more you use it and try different things, the better you get. Even at the simplest level you can create cool stuff. The thing about using apps to make music is that you can’t break anything, so there is no such thing as be careful, or don’t touch that. Anything goes. You can learn by just trying things. I really like this app. Thanks to the developer. ### 5/5 — Very Limited, but Totally Awesome *2019-01-04, version 1.9.1* I’m actually kinda mad I didn’t hear about this app sooner. I really only use it for drums/sample loops, but this is the exact sort of workflow I was looking for. It has the loop-based simplicity of Figure mixed with the sampling features of iMPC Pro. That equals a simple fun app that is surprisingly useful for making actual music. While this app has its share of limits (and it is quite limited), it’s still a lot of fun. Which is important because I don’t see my phone replacing my laptop anything soon. It’s nice to be able to jam out a quick beat using my own packs without putting too much effort into loading samples. Also, the copy of Ableton Live 10 Lite makes this one of the unsung heroes of the App Store. It’s a shame more people aren’t talking about this app; it’s probably the first thing you should buy if you have both a laptop and an iPhone/iPad and you want to get into music production. ### 5/5 — No longer looks like a child’s game! *2018-11-03, version 1.9.1* Now I can pretend to be working on something serious like music whilst still playing with my favorite audio toy, THANKS! Have not tried new version but being able to export to LIVE seems useful! ### 3/5 — USELESS (to me) without LANDSCAPE MOD *2018-10-07, version 1.9* Limited orientation options FAIL-I use my iPad Pro in a Focusrite Dock, with, unbelievable but true, OTHER APPS (i.e. Luis Martinez’’s, EXCELLENT Funk Drummer) in, now get this, an ACTUAL WORKFLOW. Without LANDSCAPE MODE, this app is of LiMITED UTILITY. IPhones are wonderful things, but not the ONLY thing. ### 4/5 — Fifth star will come when you add sample editor with trim, stretch and slicer *2018-05-08* Very nice app, only thing missing is a manual sample editor with time stretch, manual trim and an automatic slicer that can fill the pad set automatically. Think Teenage Engineering PO-33 K.O. These guys nailed it ! But so bad no app in the planet has all of its features yet ! So many apps are close but lack a couple a features only. Sorry to hear you don’t like them, I guess it’s a matter of taste. Did you know you can import and record your own sounds into Triqtraq? That would solve your problem wouldn’t it? Connect your device to iTunes, browse to the Triqtraq app in the app list and drag in your samples (wav 16-bit, 44khz). Recording of your own sounds is also possible, if you’d like to learn how I suggest reading the manual. ### 1/5 — Trash *2018-10-28, version 1.9* I want my money back!!!! ### 1/5 — The samples included with this are mediocre at best. *2015-11-14, version 1.5.3* I looked at the videos before downloading thinking that I could record or insert my own samples. It seems I was wrong as there is no way to do any of this, at least on an iPad. If you are happy to make music using just the rather boring and second rate samples included, then go ahead and buy it, I just feel that I've been conned. ### 1/5 — Total junk *2013-02-08, version 1.0.0* This thing is absolute garbage compared to the Figure! app by propellerhead. That app has a clean UI, crisp graphics, and intuitive controls. This app has none of that at 3 times the price. You've been warned. ### 1/5 — No export = pointless. *2012-09-07, version 1.0.0* Could be good but as you can't export you work as WAV,aiff or mp3 or even audiocopy it is pointless, at least as a music making app. ### 2/5 — Not Worth The Money! *2018-12-09, version 1.9.1* You can only create a 1-bar 4/4 loop, and although you can change the pitch of any sound, there’s no real way to write a melody with only a 1-bar loop. The UI is unintuitive and EXTREMELY limited. I was looking forward to recording my own sounds on my phone and just making a chill beat right then and there, but there’s no way to make a beat that would even remotely sound like the idea in my head. Some of the specific limitations: 1. As I mentioned before, a strict 1-bar, 4/4 loop with 16th note subdivisions. 2. You can run 4 tracks at once (pretty standard), BUT each track only has 16 “beat slots”. There’s only one sound per beat slot, so a track alone can’t be layered. 3. There is no keyboard. You can change the pitch of a sound, but it uses a slider with is weird, finicky, and clunky. Maybe if you are trying to make strictly drum beats with no synth progression then you wouldn’t mind this. Regardless, the melodic support is very poor. 4. The tempo only goes as low as 59 bpm. I know a lot of songs aren’t that slow, but 55 bpm is not an unheard of tempo. I find that just a very high minimum. Also the tracks have a strange function of half, 1.5, and double speed. Which leads into my next point... 5. The half, 1.5, and double speeds are a cheap and round-about way to justify the limit of a 16th subdivision versus just making a way to change the subdivisions. Doubling allows for a 32nd note, but it halves the number of notes you can have whereas an option to change the subdivision would not pose this problem. Oh, and I struggle to see the point of a 1.5 speed. Speed should be allocated to purely the tempo. Overall, it’s cheaply made and poorly designed. It’s not intuitive, and it is EXPENSIVE for how basic the structure is. I know I’ve already said it twice, but the ONLY OPTION is a 1 BAR, 4/4 loop. That is soooo limiting to what a musician can do! It offers no real area for even a basic chord progression or melody. Find another app, and DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY! EDIT: I want to thank Zaplin Music for their quick response to my review. It speaks volumes that they want each customer to enjoy their product in full. I’ll look again at the app, and I may potentially edit my review in full as it appears I have not used all of its features to their fullest extent. For now, I’m bumping up my review a star for their quick and thoughtful response; excellent customer service. ### 2/5 — Jump in,get wet, jump out, still wet! *2016-10-29, version 1.7.0* I like this more than I thought I would. More powerful in terms of automation and parameter controls than IKaossilator and I guess it's like a clever version of Figure. HOWEVER...most of us iOS musicos use iPads in landscape mode. I hate HAVING to use portrait mode. Can I hear myself? ### 2/5 — Barely adequate. *2016-03-23, version 1.6.2* Based on the reviews and a couple of audio samples, TriqTraq seemed like a no brainer to buy. That said, and after messing around with the app for about an hour, I would have done better saving my money. Going on 4 years now and the developer still can only think iPhone/iPod!? ...only 1/2 of one orientation? Seriously? Many iPad cases only have landscape orientation. Worse yet, TriqTraq only supports the home button down portrait position so I can't even rest my iPad in my lap without disconnected the power cable to use the app. I think Skram is designed better and it's UI is intuitive. This developer needs to get off their tail and finish TriqTraq and make it a serious music instrument and not just a sound 'gizmo'. The developer was lazy deciding not to give the preset sounds meaningful names instead of useless names like 75 synth presets simply called Synth1-Synth75! Again, seriously? That's next to useless forcing you to have to listen to each one making it impossible to find anything quickly. Ridiculous! I find the U/I not very intuitive and at times just plain confusing. But come to find out, this app is super useful and fun to use. One thing I thought was super cool, is they allow you the ability to use your own samples and create custom kits. No other music production app has given me the option to do either. This app is a great way to capture ideas, but I could definitely see someone using it to make a full beat. The only problems are that you’re limited on FX, and there’s no keyboard. But I didn’t expect this to be a full fledged DAW - it’s not supposed to be. For only $10 CAD, it‘s well worth the price and I wouldn’t have minded paying a bit more. It’s sad to see it’s been abandoned, though. The last update was released 1 year ago, so I hope I don’t encounter any major bugs. ### 5/5 — Amazing *2020-01-19, version 1.9.4* Great program - super easy and fun to play with. If you want the warmest fattest pitched 808s this isn't the app but if you want to put all that aside for a minute and go for a real stream of conscious creative swim outside of boundaries of your musical skills or concepts about music theory this is the app to do it! Pure love. *2019-07-04, version 1.9.4* This app has been out for a long time, and it’s been passed over by far too many people. I have bought a lot of different apps on the App Store. When it comes to sampling that is quick, fun, and creative, you want triqtraq and/or koala. Triqtraq and Koala are quite different, but they are complementary. Triqtraq has motion record for effects and more input, which is nice for filters and variation. Koala’s sample editing features are very quick and handy for finding the right chop. If you want to get into iOS sample-based music production, you can’t go wrong by picking up Triqtraq along with Koala.
