## What is Trove?

Trove is one app for the files you use: PDFs, books, photos, videos, music, recordings, scans.

Press play on an audiobook and Trove remembers where you stopped. Have a PDF or a book read to you in a natural voice, and watch each word light up as it's spoken. Scan a document and it comes out as a PDF you can search. Back the whole library up, encrypted. No account, no subscription, no ads, no tracking.

### 5/5 — Good App

*2026-10-05*

The app is good and works when I use it.

### 5/5 — Remembers URL

*2026-10-01*

I downloaded a file from a website and the next time I went to download a file the app remembered that you URL I previously used.

### 5/5 — Best File Management App

*2026-09-04*

After many years of using subpar file management apps, I decided to make my own app and put in all the features I wish the other file management apps had with none of the headaches and subscription fees for which I had grown weary and frustrated. My youngest child is in the hospital a lot, which means I am in the hospital a lot, with her. I have had to depend largely on my iPhone for keeping track of medical records, custodial and insurance paperwork, and Christian ministry audio and video downloads (for encouragement). Laptops and iPads are just not near as handy as my iPhone. I hope you all like this app as much as I do. Let me know if you want a feature that is not currently available and I will do my best to accommodate, as long as it doesn’t redefine the app too much.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.2 — 2026-10-12

Links now work in books and PDFs. In an EPUB, tap a footnote number and the note opens right there, with a button to go to its place in the book if you want it. Tap a cross reference and the book turns to it. In a PDF, a link takes you to its page. If the document was being read aloud, the reading carries on from the new place. A Back arrow next to Done takes you back to where you were. Links to the web open in Trove's own browser.

Highlights and notes in books. Select some words in an EPUB, a text file, or a saved web page and choose Highlight, or Add Note to write something about them. Tap a highlight to read the note, change the color, or remove it. They're all listed under Highlights & Notes in the Bookmark menu, and they go into your backups.

The reading controls fold down. A chevron beside the slider shrinks the player to a slim bar so the page gets the room. Next to it, a hand button switches Tap to Read on and off, for when you'd rather touch the page without the voice starting. And for a meeting, there's a speaker button that turns Read Aloud off altogether: the bar keeps nothing but the way to turn it back on, so nothing you touch can start the voice. If you'd rather have the whole screen for the page, the voice menu can hide that bar too.

Leave Unspoken, in the voice menu, has a new choice: pictures, maps, charts, and tables. Turn it on and their captions and the words inside them are passed over when you read along in a book or a saved page.

Two things for the natural voices, which can only speak while the screen is on. Trove now keeps the screen on while one is reading, so the phone doesn't lock itself mid-chapter (there's a switch in the voice menu if you'd rather it didn't). And for a walk, there's On the Go under the play controls: Trove turns the rest of the chapter into an audiobook, plays it with the screen off, and when you open the book again it picks up where the audio stopped.

The natural voices also say the short Old Testament book names in full now, so Ezek. 3 is "Ezekiel 3", and cf. is read as "cross reference". Another 1,400 or so Bible names were checked against a self-pronouncing Bible.

Dark Mode. Trove now goes dark with your iPhone, books and text documents included. Or keep it light or dark whatever the phone does: tap the ••• menu, then Appearance.

As always, your files stay on your phone, and nothing about you is collected.

### 1.4.1 — 2026-09-29

This update is about how the natural voices say things, above all in the Bible.

They now know the names, or nearly all of them. Ahab, Boaz, Naomi, Ephraim, Jehu, Abner, Nebuchadnezzar and some 2,800 more come out the way you've always heard them. We checked them against Strong's Concordance. There's nothing to set up.

For a word they still get wrong, there is a new Say It Like list in the voice menu. Type the word and how to say it, in syllables with the stressed one in capitals, tap Hear It to check, and save it. It is used from then on. Your words go into your backups.

Bible references read the way people say them. John 3:16 is "John three, sixteen", Psalm 23:1-6 is "twenty-three, one to six", and short book names are said in full: Ps. 23 is "Psalm 23", 1 Cor. 13:4 is "one Corinthians thirteen, four". St. Paul is "Saint Paul", and vol. 2, pp. 12-15 is "volume 2, pages 12 to 15". Roman numerals are read as numbers, so Chapter XIV is "Chapter 14".

Fixed:
• Numbers from 21 to 29 lost their "twenty", so Psalm 23 came out as "Psalm three"
• "Live" and "lived" were said as in "live wire"
• A reference at the end of a sentence was cut in two, so "Phil." on its own came out as "fill"
• If you locked your phone during a long book, reading carried on with an Apple voice and stayed there. It now goes back to your natural voice as soon as Trove is on screen again

As always, your files stay on your phone, and nothing about you is collected. If a name or a word still sounds wrong, tell us which one.

### 1.4 — 2026-09-22

This update is mostly about listening to long books, especially the Bible. Most of what's here is part of Trove Pro. You can try it all free for 30 days.

You can now jump straight to a chapter and verse. While a book is being read, tap the magnifying glass and you'll get the chapters as a grid of numbers, and then the verses. You can also type a reference like John 3:16. If you type words instead, Trove searches the whole book and lets you start reading from any place it finds them.

The player has new buttons for the next and previous chapter and verse (or sentence, if the book has no verse numbers), and it shows where you are, for example Genesis 3:16. Play, pause, and skip also work from the Lock Screen, Control Center, and your headphones.

Trove now remembers where you stopped reading in PDFs, books, text files, and saved web pages. Close one, come back a week later, and it picks up at the same sentence.

You can choose not to hear verse numbers, footnotes, page numbers and headers, or the preface, appendix, and index. The switches are in the voice menu under Leave Unspoken. The page itself isn't changed.

You can make a PDF out of more things. Touch and hold a picture, a Word document, a text file, or a page you saved from the web and choose Create PDF. When you share photos, a Word document, a text file, or a web page to Trove from another app, it asks if you'd like a PDF. The browser has Save Page as PDF too. The words in your pictures are recognized as the PDF is made, so you can search it and have it read aloud.

Also new:
• Bookmarks and a sleep timer while reading. The timer can stop at the end of the chapter
• Read Along works with text files
• If a PDF has bookmarks, you can use them as a table of contents
• Save as Audiobook lets you choose which sections to include, and makes each one a chapter
• Big PDFs start reading much sooner, and almost instantly the second time you open them
• While a big book is getting ready, Trove shows that it's working
• Merge PDFs is easier to find. Touch and hold a PDF and choose Merge with Other PDFs
• The natural voices now pause after a chapter heading
• File names in your lists no longer show .pdf, .epub, and so on. You can turn that back on from the menu at the top right
• Backups include your reading places and bookmarks
• Help has a new section on setting up a Bible or a book so it reads well

Fixed:
• A crash when an Apple voice read a very long book on iOS 27
• A whistling sound some natural voices made on long sentences
• Reading sometimes went silent after you tapped a word
• Pause sometimes did nothing if you pressed it right after Play
• Create PDF on a picture gave no sign that it had worked
• The formatting bar for notes (bold, italic, color, highlight) was missing above the keyboard
• While reading along, the words at the bottom of the screen were hidden behind the play controls

As always, your files stay on your phone, and nothing about you is collected. If something's missing or broken, let us know.

### 1.3 — 2026-09-18

This one's a big update.

Much better voices. Open the voice menu in Read Aloud or Read Along and choose Get Natural Voices. It's a one-time download of about 180 MB that runs entirely on your iPhone or iPad, with fourteen American and British voices you could listen to for a whole book. Nothing you read is sent anywhere.

Read along. Open a PDF, an EPUB, or a page you saved from the web, press play, and Trove reads it to you while it highlights each word. Tap any word to pick up from there. If you'd rather listen later, Save as Audiobook turns the document into an audio file, in a natural voice or an Apple one, that works with the sleep timer and the Lock Screen like anything else you play.

Also in this release:
• EPUB books, with a table of contents and your place remembered
• Chapters for audiobooks, and you can skip between them from the Lock Screen
• Cloud folders: link a folder from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive and copy files in either direction
• Tags. Every tag shows up as its own smart folder
• A duplicate finder in Storage
• Web link shortcuts in your folders, and Save Page Offline in the browser
• Summarize & Ask, which uses Apple Intelligence on your iPhone (iOS 26) and never sends your document anywhere
• Old Palm e-books (PalmDoc .pdb files) open as text
• Personal Voice works with Read Aloud

Requires iOS 18 or iPadOS 18. As always, nothing leaves your phone unless you send it. If something's missing, let us know.

### 1.1 — 2026-09-03

• Make folders your own: emoji icons, 32 colors, gradient and mesh fills, badges, and cover photos.
• Trim and split any audio recording or video clip, with a live preview.
• Cut and paste to move files, alongside copy and paste.
• Transcribe recordings of any length on your device. For group recordings, hand off to a speaker-labeling app and save the transcript back.
• A short tour on first launch, and Help updated for every feature.
• Fixed the Pro free trial for everyone who installed 1.0: you can now start your 30 days from the paywall.
• Fixed a memory leak in the in-app browser, and images behind a login now save correctly.
