I definitely notice an improvement with TruHu. That being said, the $39.99 price would be fair as a one time purchase. It’s incredibly steep as an annual fee considering its limitations in comparison to a colorimeter. Update (April 2026): After regularly using the tool for a year, I stand by my initial assessment. I found it was often best to calibrate about 3 times per profile and compare each side-by-side to pick the most accurate profile. There will be differences and it isn’t a one-and-done tool. That being said, it is decent for what it is. $39.99 per year is absolutely too much. I will not be renewing at this time but would consider if the pricing model is re-evaluated. It’s definitely worth paying for, it just isn’t worth what they’re asking for on a recurring basis. **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. Really?? *2025-03-23* I would have been happy to pay a one-off price for this app but trying to push it as a sneaky annual subscription after going through and installing the desktop app, pairing them together and running the calibration is a terrible business practice that I will not support. We don't feel there's anything "sneaky" about our annual subscription. We feel we are pretty up front about TruHu's price on our web site - see https://truhu.app/product. Yes, it calibrates the white bal on one’s computer monitor in a snap. Alas, I was looking for a replacement for the THX optimiser app, now that it’s stopped working for ios18. I liked the THX app, as it used quick reference photos I could use as a final check after running my CalMan Software I can show my customers, as regular folks can’t relate to patterns. This app doesn’t really have any. Other downsides: 1. Only Cals greyscale, and black levels, no white levels. 2. CANT BE SENT TO TVs or work with TVs, which is a deal breaker. 3. It’s $40 USD a year. A one time payment of $40? Okay fine. But each YEAR? FORGET IT. ### 1/5 — Paid only *2024-02-07* Useless unless you pay for subscription. Subscription to monitor calibration! **Developer response:** We've designed TruHu so that you can try it out and see the results of your calibration prior to subscribing. We think that is valuable. In addition, new phones and monitors come out every year. We constantly work to ensure TruHu works on every model, with every camera configuration - some of which can be quite different. We want to make sure TruHu is useful to our customers over the long run. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — SCAM *2026-06-12* This app is trash. I used it several times and it never gives the same result twice. I purchased a yearly subscription shortly after the trial. It wasn’t until later I realize it doesn’t work correctly. I canceled my subscription and deleted my account. One year later I was charged again even though my account had been deleted. There is zero way to get in contact with the developer for billing support. Filed a dispute with Apple Card to reverse the charges. If the devs see this review, please contact me. ### 1/5 — Registrierung *2026-06-05, version 3.3* Warum zum Teufel brauche ich ein Konto? Ach und dann auch noch 39,99$ pro Jahr? Antwort vom Entwickler: „Sie benötigen ein Konto, damit wir das iPhone mit dem Desktop synchronisieren können. Und Sie müssen bezahlen, um das Entwicklungsteam zu unterstützen.“ Was für ein Unsinn! ### 1/5 — Don’t waste your time on any platform *2026-01-06, version 3.1* The solution (apparently) relies upon having an App running on both the iPhone and the Windows desktop. Having installed the App on the phone you will be asked to create an account. You then need to install the Desktop App and pair it with the iPhone App. Only trouble is the Desktop App doesn’t recognise the account created by the phone App, and if you try to create the account on the desktop App the fact you’ve already done it on the phone prevents you… Or at least that’s my assumption of what the problem is. You don’t get anything helpful about the cause from the UI - just a red X by the email address (User ID) and an irritating beep. Poorly designed software with lousy pre-release QA… Don’t waste the 15-20 minutes of your life this App will steal. ### 1/5 — Irreführend *2025-07-29, version 3.0* Man wird erst nach der Kalibrierung des Monitors mit den dreisten 39.99$ pro Jahr konfrontiert ### 1/5 — Not supported *2025-05-23* The iPad app says it was free, so I download it. Download the desktop app because that’s needed, no indication of price. Then you want me to sign up (for reasons). Fine. Go to sign up only to find out that there is a price to use this. There is a free to try, so I click on that. I register for an account, go back to the iPad, log in, only to get an error “iPad is not a supported device”. **Developer response:** Hi There - Yes TruHu does NOT Support iPads. We cannot access the video LUT like we can on a Mac or Windows computer. It’s $39 *2025-03-14* Couldn’t tell you if the results are any good or not. After downloading this phone app and trusting a desktop app from developer I’ve never heard of, I went through all the steps and bam!! Presented with a $39 upcharge that was not disclosed ahead of time (its annual too). Not only is this a poor way of doing business, but the app doesn’t even show you what the results would look like before paying. This is not a risk I want to take and I will not use nor recommend this app as a result! As far as I’m concerned, this shouldn’t even be allowed on the app store as the app itself provides no usefulness aside funneling sales to a website. Also of note, are we all just trusting apps on the web now? The fact that the Mac software isn’t in the App Store is a huge security risk let alone a bad look from the consumer perspective. It was always our intention for the iOS app to be free. I think that's pretty standard. Of course, we also need to make a living and try and recover some of the money we spent developing TruHu. And I think we are pretty up front about TruHu's price on our web site - see https://truhu.app/product. I think your comment about putting the desktop application on the Mac app store is worthy of further consideration. Since we are supporting both Mac and Win, we just thought it would be easier to have everything in one place. Re pricing - some of the other moncal products have a forever license, which is in reality ~3 years due to the fact that the filters on colorimeters change over time, in the $200 range, so we feel an annual license of $39.99 is reasonable. And with ever new iphones and monitor technology requiring new TruHu lookup tables, we have ongoing development costs, which is why we chose a SaaS pricing model. ### 1/5 — Absolutely terrible *2025-01-14* Tried this, couldn’t calibrate for anything. Then tried to uninstall from my IPhone 12proMax. Kept doing squirly things, other apps opened. Had to turn off WiFi and data to uninstall. **Developer response:** Sorry about your squirrelly experience. I don't have a good explanation at this time. While it looks nice and seems to be easy to use according to the screenshots, it is useless currently if you don't own a Mac computer. You have to download both the phone app AND the Mac desktop app. It is not yet available on either windows or Android so if you don't have the required hardware, don't download it. The description in the app store needs to updated to include this fact. **Developer response:** Hi There: Just because we didn't have a Windows version at the time your wrote this review, I don't think we deserve a one-star review. We did subsequently release the Windows version of TruHu. Re having to download two apps – that's the whole point, to use your iPhone to calibrate you desktop. Feel free to update your review. ### 1/5 — Compatibility. *2024-04-15, version 1.9* It says it works on mac os 10.14.6 Mojave. But it doesn’t. Catalina or later. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Solid, well priced color calibration for nonprofessionals *2025-10-01* This app and accompanying desktop software is great for casuals (like me) that enjoy viewing their monitors in accurate color. I also have to review figma assets and occasionally video edit for work — being able to accurately view color is quite useful. I wouldn’t rely on TruHu for professional calibration but that’s not what it’s meant for anyway. I’d much rather pay for a simple app that takes 60 seconds to spit out decent color than drop hundreds on a colorimeter AND learn how to use complicated software that’s frankly unnecessary given my use case. As an aside, expecting to get technology like this for free is mindboggling to me. I wonder if people who do so also download the free Canon Connect app and rate it one star because the camera doesn’t come with it? ### 5/5 — Great results *2025-04-08* This app made my display accurate and I can control the color temperature. It works in under a minute and I don’t have to splurge on a dedicated calibrator and have to connect it via an old school USBA-C dongle. ### 5/5 — Not a Pro, But this is pretty good *2024-08-16* I have three monitors that I have attempted to get to look similar to one another for the longest time. It’s been maddening as they’re always slightly off. I had thought about purchasing something like a Spyder, but I didn’t feel right dropping $200. This app is very reasonably priced and all of my monitors are now looking exactly the same with regards to color profile. It was super easy to set up. I no longer need an expensive colorimeter connected through an old school USB dongle. I will follow up in the next day or two, but I really want to start by encouraging continued development. Thank you for adapting everyday technology, and putting it to good use. For the record, I would’ve paid to try this. I have a Spyder5 Pro monitor calibration tool. Spyder has decided not to continue supporting this hardware, despite the fact that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. They plainly say, they just want to sell more, new devices. Their selling point? The new devices have an optical sensor and new software. You know what else has an optical sensor?My smart phone. So I’m happy to see that this app is on here, because it’s a great idea. ### 4/5 — Calibration- on QD-OLED Moniter *2026-04-09* You know what I’m slightly more than content with the results which is weird. It did a somewhat good job and calibrating a warm/ in natural cool white issue I was having. By putting the color profile to 8000k it seemed to offset the warm color grading issue I was experiencing. I’m happy. $40 bucks per year is some BS to be honest but oh well **Developer response:** Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. In our experience, QD-OLED is more of a technology found in 40"+ TVs than in desktop monitors. And TruHu doesn't support TVs. What model monitor are you using? If you achieved reasonable results, we are happy for you, but we didn't develop TruHu for this application. In terms of annual subscription, we think it's a very good deal compared to $200+ for a colorimeter-based monitor calibrator. We are continually improving TruHu to adapt to new iPhone models and new types of display technology, which is why it is a subscription. --Clark (founder) ### 3/5 — Meh *2025-05-09* I knew going in, this wasn’t going to be a free app but 40 bucks for an annual subscription in the face of just buying the appropriate tool and having that for a lifetime seems a bit much. Will keep an eye on this app as it definitely shows promise and for the price beats trying to edit photos against an uncalibrated monitor . Just feel that for 100.00 bucks more to have the tool to use across multiple devices for a lifetime is a better option at this time.
