### 4/5 — Better than using the site, but a couple of nitpicks

*2026-05-26, version 1.35*

I like anki mode and back to back reviews, both of which require scripts that are constantly at risk of breaking on the main site. Frankly if I had to manually type 100 reviews a day, I’d quit. Don’t have the time or patience for that. Two small nitpicks I have though, is I wish you could hide the accuracy percentage during reviews, and disable the review summary once done. Both are distracting and make bad days feel worse by emphasizing my failures. I don’t know if the dev even reads these, but these two small features would make the app perfect for me. Thanks for the hard work.

### 5/5 — Very thankful for this app

*2025-12-20, version 1.34*

This app has made wanikani much more valuable to me. Thank you to the dev! This rocks.

### 4/5 — .

*2025-12-07, version 1.34*

They make you wait too long to learn new stuff

### 5/5 — Happy

*2025-12-04, version 1.34*

I am so happy this exists. I love wanikani on my desktop but the mobile experience was lacking until I found this app. How do we donate to the developer? There should be an option in the options.

### 4/5 — Does not match Wanikani on the whole

*2025-11-16, version 1.34*

Unfortunately if you use the WaniKani website to study and then practice on this app, you can be forgiven for thinking you have gotten the kanji wrong. This app doesn’t match the onyomi and kunyomi you learned in the lessons. So you are prompted to enter exactly what reading the app has stored in its database.
I like to give varying responses to each so I reinforce all of what I have learnt in the lessons. Same goes for the various meanings of a kanji. The primary and alternatives. I have not had issues with the meanings as yet.
If all the readings were added, it would be great.

### 5/5 — Essential

*2025-11-04, version 1.34*

Really good app for doing reviews on the go. I mainly use this app to access wanikani.

### 4/5 — Flickering Screen

*2025-10-17, version 1.34*

During vocab review, the purple background flickers between a slightly warm shade of purple and a cooler shade of purple. Not sure what's happening. It's not consistent, it maybe happens half the time, but once it gets going it usually doesn't stop. I'm using dark mode, and it's likely not based on my specific device because I've tried two different phones and the same thing happens. Might only be triggered after a certain amount of time, since I only noticed it now that I had a big stack of 70+ reviews. Very distracting.

Otherwise love the app, and the ability to use Wanikani on mobile without the website!

### 5/5 — Amazing App

*2025-10-15, version 1.34*

This is a great app that does exactly as it says on the tin. It allows me to do my reviews wherever i want on my phone. I’m glad the developer stepped up and made this app when the Wanikani devs didn’t.

### 5/5 — A WaniKani Must Have!

*2025-10-12, version 1.34*

The perfect WaniKani companion that collects none of your personal data! Works spectacularly!!!

### 5/5 — Better than Wanikani website

*2025-09-25, version 1.34*

Like the other reviews here, confirming I’ve been using this app daily for years now, and it’s fantastic:
- it’s offline, which is a game changer for me: as I can do my reviews in my commute time or in a plane
- the customization of reviews order is very convenient
- it’s lightweight, doesn’t require login every other day

The only request I could make is that it’s missing the “Patterns of use”, which is very useful and sometimes makes me switch to the website.

### 5/5 — Feature broke on last update

*2025-09-17, version 1.34*

Interrupt background audio toggle is not working anymore, always interrupts.

### 4/5 — Really good

*2025-09-15, version 1.34*

I’ve learnt so much, but I feel like it sometimes is too much stuff at once, and it can become overwhelming.

### 4/5 — Needs kun/onyomi distinction

*2025-08-20, version 1.34*

Great app but readings section absolutely needs to be split into onyomi and kunyomi readings!!!

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2025-08-10, version 1.34*

I like using better than the web version, they’ve folded in some of the most useful scripts!!

### 5/5 — Highly recommended

*2025-08-09, version 1.34*

Love this app! Fast and efficient. The fact that I can put it in Anki mode allows me to spend lest time while reviewing the same amount of cards.

I just came across an error though. And would love to see it fixed. 白旗 is showing pronunciation as しろはた　but the sound file only plays はっき. I crossed checked with WaniKani and their sound file is the first.

### 5/5 — So useful

*2025-08-05, version 1.34*

just as good if not better than the website

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2025-07-26, version 1.34*

This is fantastic app. What a public service to make it and give it available away for free.

### 5/5 — Not sure how to choose audio voices

*2025-07-09, version 1.34*

The app is great but for some reason I cannot find any settings on how to enable all the available audio voice options - it only plays the default feminine for me

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Great app but vacation mode does not work

*2026-06-08, version 1.35*

I loved the old Wanikani app, so when they discontinued it and went to a third-party developer that makes Tsurukume, I switched over to it. It was fine until I needed a break and turned on vacation mode. This is supposed to pause everything and stop having new lessons and reviews pile up while you’re taking a break from the app. Instead, I came back to find 280 lessons and 1721 reviews that I had to deal with. On the Wanikani website, it showed 5 lessons and 120 reviews. I guess I will have to use the website instead.

Do not download this app until they make it work properly

### 1/5 — APP WILL NOT ACCEPT PASSWORD

*2025-10-17, version 1.34*

I keep getting an error that references an API TOKEN. The app is unusable. The website appears to work properly so far.

### 1/5 — Pronunciation mnemonics are too many, too long, and too abstract + structure needs improvement.

*2025-03-08*

Majority of pronunciation mnemonics are more than one sentence. Usually only one sentence actually includes the meaning/pronunciation. That’s an entire sentence that our brain has to process that only hinders learning. I’ve started making my own mnemonics and within 30 seconds i can come up with a pronunciation mnemonic less than 8 words that anyone could relate to. If there’s no point in paying for the mnemonics, then there’s no reason to pay for an alarm clock and flash card system.

Pronunciation mnemonics don’t link context to pronunciation. I’ve gotten a new mnemonic for each vocabulary word (kanji and hirgana combos) for pronunciation. For 10 vocabulary words that use a certain kanji, that’s 10 mnemonics to remember. Instead a mnemonic could be created for each common context and pronunciation. So far I’ve seen 5 common pronunciations max (many are just 2-3). That cuts down mnemonics to 20-50% of what this app piles on for no good reason. There are exceptions to context where kanji have irregular pronunciations, in which those need their own mnemonics. But, that’s a problem that could be isolated, instead of mixing it in with the rest of the bunch.

### 1/5 — Tons of items have cut off text when viewed in the app

*2025-02-17, version 1.34*

Something is wrong with the formatting on my device. It is distracting while trying to learn

### 1/5 — Abandoned App

*2025-02-12, version 1.34*

Broken functionality. Anki mode does not work. Submitted a support ticket and was told the developer doesn’t care about the issue. Download WaniKame instead.

### 1/5 — Broken anki mode

*2025-01-20, version 1.33*

Seems like latest update broke anki mode

### 1/5 — Can’t sign in my account

*2024-10-24, version 1.32.2*

I can’t sign in my account on my smart phone. So bad!!

### 1/5 — Just asking to redo lessons with this app

*2024-02-17, version 1.30*

You’re on your phone. You WILL fatfinger, mistype, etc. The last straw for me was when I entered the Japanese word and was marked wrong. The actual website will tell you, this app just rushes to put the wrong answer in. This causes you hours of unnecessary waiting and do-overs and I just don’t need that level of anxiety while typing on a phone. Not being able to do reviews makes this even less useful. I’d pay for a decent app - this is garbage.

### 1/5 — crashes

*2023-05-18, version 1.27*

Immediately crashes now

### 1/5 — Not user friendly if you do not want to start from the very beginning

*2023-02-02, version 1.25*

It might be useful application if you can choose the starting level. I am stuck just with radicals for the second day. I want to learn characters and vocabulary, not just radicals, which I know already. So if you want to improve your kanji knowledge and you already have certain level of knowledge, it is very boring and definitely not useful. So I am very disappointed so far.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Best App for WaniKani

*2026-07-26, version 1.36*

The app helps me learn on the go and is easy to use, hopefully we can get a widget soon for the home screen, would love to see my reviews to be completed via from the home screen with a turtle icon

### 5/5 — This app is the best for learning kanji

*2026-07-22, version 1.36*

Seriously, there is nothing that can top wani Kani. The SRS is slow at first but when you get going you can learn kanji very quickly. Keep up with your lessons and it won’t become overwhelming

### 5/5 — Thanks for the continued to support

*2026-05-14, version 1.35*

I’ve really appreciated using this app on both desktop and mobile. Happy with the improvement and fixes in the recent update. Thanks!

### 5/5 — Good, but I have a suggestion

*2026-05-14, version 1.35*

Really like Wani kani, kanji is lovely. App is smooth, and only crashes if I leave it open in the background for hours.

My one and only complaint is I wish kunyomi and onyomi readings were differentiated, or it let me know which was which. On the browser version of Wani kani, this is so. It’s the only downgrade from the OG to Tsurukame.

### 5/5 — Great supplement

*2026-05-09, version 1.35*

WaniKani has a lot of shortcomings that are covered up by this app. I honestly don’t think it’s worth getting WaniKani without this.

The recent improvements like blurring example sentences until touched are amazing.

### 5/5 — The only reason I use Wanikani

*2026-05-08, version 1.35*

Don’t get me wrong, Wanikani is a great website, but its mobile support has always been lacking. This app is the sole reason I get any lessons or reviews done.
It’s lightweight, supports extensions, and has offline support.
Phenomenal app

### 5/5 — Great but recent bug

*2026-05-05, version 1.35*

“Rib cage” is bugged

### 5/5 — Bug

*2026-04-28, version 1.34*

Image for radical “ribcage” is missing.

### 5/5 — Awesome.

*2026-04-21, version 1.34*

This is a really excellent app. It’s super easy to use and syncs better than almost anything else I’ve seen. It can go offline for a while but still syncs as soon as everything comes back. One tiny gripe. I’ve just put wanikani in holiday mode and the review count just goes up as if in normal mode. Once you switch off holiday mode it’s all fine but just a little stressful seeing that number go crazy high. Still 5 stars. A great app. Thanks.

### 5/5 — Excellent App, Been Using For Years

*2025-12-28, version 1.34*

This app has been an absolute lifesaver. Super easy to just review a few kanji in passing and has nearly every functionality WaniKani has.

Wish there was the ability to unburn Kanji like on the site but this app is absolutely more than I could ask for.
