### 4/5 — Best Option Available

*2022-10-06, version 3.1.18*

Everyone in my fiddle group uses this and encourages newcomers to get it. It’s extremely handy and easy to edit (with some practice). I really wish I could create new songs from scratch. That would make it so much easier to add and share tunes with each other. Also not sure why I can’t just add a file that’s on my iPad (unless I’m missing something)

### 4/5 — Exactly what I was looking for, and does it perfectly

*2018-07-08, version 3.1.15*

I would have given Tunebook five stars except I can’t edit the abc: the keyboard gets in the way so I can’t see what I’m editing, and I can’t move the text behind it into view. But I wasn’t looking for an abc editor, I was looking for something that would let me import, view and play abc files and this app does it perfectly.

### 4/5 — Bought for bagpipe music

*2013-05-08, version 2.6.6*

Very good app for sheet music, in general. You can add your own music (in .abc format), you can personalize playlists and collections, and it has a MIDI player. It does ok with bagpipe music.

### 4/5 — Hit and miss for choral music

*2013-03-02, version 2.6.6*

The example screenshots don't show it, but lyrics work well. Multi-voice music displays properly, but only the top line plays back reliably, which limits its use as a tool for choral composers / arrangers.

### 5/5 — Great music organizer-LOVE IT

*2012-02-04, version 2.6*

I've not used ABC notation much but understand how it works. This app let's you import whole tunebooks that are available on the web either in total or individually. After you have tunes downloaded & properly in the app, you can sort by title, key, time signature or abc notes. You can then set up tunebooks within the app, say you're making a set list or want all of your waltzes in one place, like a database you'll see them sorted into these tunebooks while not changing the total list of tunes.

I have both versions of this app for itouch and iPad and they work slightly differently. So far the itouch/iPhone app is a little easier to figure out, possibly because I've used it more. Looking for a way to add a single new tune in the iPad version & haven't found it. Wish the web developer site had a click here to contact.

Great Tool for musicians at any level!

### 5/5 — Ceoltoir

*2011-06-15, version 2.4.9*

Wonderful app and now even better with the latest updates. Great for someone like me learning an instrument. Must have for anyone interested in Irish music.

*2011-05-06, version 2.4.8*

Nice tool for Irish & Celtic music lovers!
Able to delete a tune must be much better...

### 4/5 — Nice complement to Tunepal

*2011-04-18, version 2.4.8*

I have been using Tunepal for awhile and it works great for finding music people have posted online in the abc format. If you have your own collection of abc files or need reliable access to certain sheet music offline, however, Tunebook is indispensable.

Tunebook generally does a good job of displaying sheet music (and playing it back midi-style) as long as you give it well-formed abc. Given the limited screen real estate on an iPhone, it works best for short fiddle tunes and the like. (There is an example Bach concerto that comes with the app, but it seems to be cut off at the bottom. Doesn't concern me much as I would never feed Tunebook something that huge, but the author may want to look into it?) I imagine the iPad version would be better suited to those longer pieces.

The one feature I would really like to see in Tunebook, however, is the ability to transpose to a different key. I can't tell you how many times I've shown up at a gig and the singer goes, "Oh, I'd rather do this song in D." The guitarists all flip on their capos but I'm on a fiddle. I can sight read music, so all I need is that transpose function and I won't be left behind. Put this one feature in and I'll give it 5 stars! (Note: In desperation, I did once manage to transpose a song all on the iPhone by copying the abc source out of Tunebook, pasting it into a transposing web site in Safari, and copying it back, but that was arduous to say the least!)

### 4/5 — Great well written app

*2011-04-04, version 2.4.8*

A really well thought out app. The local webserver upload works very well. This is perfect for a portable cheat sheet for when you forget the next tune of a set!

### 4/5 — Does the job nicely

*2011-03-20, version 2.4.8*

This app does what it says it will. You upload your abc collections using the built in web server. Then you can create tunebooks and manually attach selected tunes. A bit tedious but it works. I use it for dance tunes. On my screen the music is too small. It would be nice if the app optimized the view for you. And really, to play from it would require a bigger screen. But as a memory aide, a nice little program.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Won't import tunes

*2017-08-31, version 3.2.14*

I've used Abcnotation a good bit.
My band has a book of about 2010s are set up on the web. But I'll look at it with a browser, I threw the ABC code. When I tell this program to import it, it just says they didn't find any ABC files in index.HTML.

### 1/5 — Die beste ABC-App

*2013-12-22, version 3.1.1*

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2013-12-20, version 3.1*

This app has crashed repeatedly. Every time I've opened it for more than one minute it closes itself without warning. Not particularly easy to use, hard to add tunes to. How do I get my money back?

### 1/5 — Latest version does not work on 3.1.2

*2012-05-15, version 2.6*

Old version was great - 5 stars -, with few minor bugs. I updated to latest version and now app starts to load to tunes and then quits.
I have managed to restore the previous version from a time machine back up, but it's not that simple.

Moral - always download an app update onto an iPhone/iPad first and test it. If it doesn't work, then delete it from the iPhone/iPad (keep finger on app until it shakes and X appears and touch X). Sync with computer to restore previous working version.

### 1/5 — can

*2012-04-12, version 2.6*

I downloaded the app to my Iphone. It won't open, so I can't use it. When I try to contact the developer, I get the support screen and there is no contact information. Itunes can't help. What a rip off. I wish someone would just contact me about it.

### 2/5 — Visiblement pas maintenu à jour

*2024-10-01, version 3.1.18*

### 3/5 — Great but loses edita

*2021-08-20, version 3.1.18*

I use this app every and I love it when it works. A massive bug makes it lose edits to ABC tunes. I spent hours tweaking a few tunes last night, and this morning they all reverted to the previous version. Store backups of your edits elsewhere. It’s so frustrating.

### 3/5 — Tunebook Glitches

*2019-07-26, version 3.1.18*

I like this app but I find that I can only listen with my headphones in. It sometimes plays and sometimes not.
Also the alignment in settings are all out.

### 3/5 — Needs iCloud sync

*2018-04-17, version 3.2.14*

App works well and is mature. The ability to search and find tunes on the web is great.

But in this day and age I assume that whatever I do on my phone will be the same in my iPad and vice versa. No so with this app. Anything I put in one place has to be manually moved/copies to the other.

### 3/5 — Has great promise - but....

*2012-06-26, version 2.6*

App has some great promise - but there are issues with the iPhone version:
- followed the support guide for adding tunes to a user-created tunebook - can't add files at all
- letters like ä å ö in the ABC file don't render correctly in tune list - after editing the ABC file content
- upload of one ABC file at a time to the web server is a pain in the **** with many files to upload - multiple file upload is a necessity
- support doesn't give any way to email the app creator for advice/suggestions
- web server connection is unreliable - takes several enable attempts to establish a connection from a web browser
Fix these problems and I'd give it 5*

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Excellent and intuitive!

*2020-09-07, version 3.1.18*

A great way to jot down a melody, listen to it, then save it as a MIDI file or PDF score, and print it too! The ability to use ABC notation is very convenient and intuitive. I’m not sure whether it’s just my phone but sometimes it doesn’t successfully save my edits, so I’m careful to copy my work as a text file before exiting the app.

### 5/5 — Really useful.

*2019-02-15, version 3.1.16*

Great for tune storage. Easy to access or search for tunes. Easy to edit the ABC notation. Sorting by title, meter, key. The import functions are nice, too, from thesession.org and other places, or from a local web server. All around, a well-done app.

### 5/5 — Really great app for musicians

*2018-11-24, version 3.1.16*

This app plays abc notation from a variety of solid sources. Music can be slowed down and played on a wide array of instruments. I have it on ipad(s) and iPhone for one purchase price. Brilliant value.

### 5/5 — sehr empfehlenswert

*2018-10-24, version 3.1.16*

### 5/5 — Outstanding

*2017-04-27, version 3.2.14*

Responsive developer amazing download of abc notation tunes just have to use a proxy site to load sites otherwise it won't load websites. Beautiful renditions of tunes, has tune books shows keys of songs and beats. Also can play songs with midi like player. Export and import songs easy. Top value and quality

### 5/5 — Trev

*2015-03-29, version 3.2.8*

Brilliant product. The transposition tool is excellent and very quick to use and there is nothing like it in the other apps available. I have around 120,000 tunes in my lists.

### 5/5 — Tunebook Music Book

*2014-08-01, version 3.2.3*

I’ve been using Tunebook for the last couple of years - It is unbeatable for putting together a tune list for a gig. Since one of the views allows me to scroll through a set - I can use if for a full hour show.

### 5/5 — Better and better

*2013-12-10, version 3.1*

Tunebook now looks even better and has the really useful transpose feature as the icing on the cake. I know that there's a lot of music written out in the wrong key for my instrument (whistle) and I've been cutting and pasting online to try improving some tunes. Now I can see immediately if I've fixed the issues. Support this App because the developer (Jerry) listens to user suggestions and makes changes.

### 5/5 — Indispensable For Musicians

*2013-01-27, version 2.6.5*

Let me start by saying this app is not perfect: the visual interface and usability could be improved a bit, but I'm still happy to give it five stars for the simple fact that it is the far-and-away best app in its category. If you can even find another app that imports ABC music from free sites on the web, you're doing better than I. But this app also allows you to play the tune, loop it and slow it down, crucial for learning a new piece. Then it lets you email a PDF version to your band mates so they can get learning it too. All these features make this an indispensable tool for learning to play traditional music.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2012-05-24, version 2.6*
