## What is Tusks for Mastodon?

Tusks makes posting to Mastodon feel like publishing to your blog.

This is a Mastodon client with no timeline — just your posts. More specifically, it’s built around threads.

Starting a new thread is just as easy as making a single post. But that’s not what makes it special.

Tusks actively discourages posting into a vacuum, therefore losing valuable context. This is achieved by making it effortless to continue threading narratives. Each post becomes an update to a bigger story.

This priority shift should make your account a higher quality follow.

So, who is it for?

To be clear, if you don’t post and are not interested in writing, then not you. Otherwise…

• If you post regularly, then you.
• If you blog, then you.
• If you want to write (more), then you.

Also: if you post occasionally, then Tusks could encourage you to post more.

# Features

Tusks show your posts as well as any of your follow-ups to the original post (to be clear, you won’t see any users replies, or your interactions with users).

There are several features to help with organizing and publishing.

• Pin threads for quick access.
• Hide posts that you don’t expect to follow-up, so your list is always relevant.
• You can set unique titles for each thread for faster recall.
• Search ignores irrelevant posts (i.e. interactions with users).
• Write as much as you want in one-go and press a button to split it up into multiple posts.

In addition, drafting is a first-class feature. You can draft new threads, and as many follow-ups to already published posts.

# Availability

Tusks has iOS, iPadOS and macOS clients. A lot of work has gone into optimising for each form factor, so they always feel at home. All your drafts, pins and labels will be synced across your devices too.

# Pricing

Tusks has all features enabled for free users, except for one.

If you want to publish content to Mastodon, you’ll need to upgrade to Tusks Pro — this is available through an in-app purchase. No subscription required. All payments will be charged to your Apple ID account at the confirmation of purchase.

# Privacy

Tusks takes your privacy very seriously. It does not store any personal data — it stays completely private.

The full privacy policy & terms of use can be read here: https://midnight-beanie-ccb.notion.site/Privacy-Policy-3b45102d741e4a9fa15d8e398839cef0?pvs=4.

### 3/5 — Needs an update

*2025-07-06*

Got a lot of updates early but then went silent. Still essential to how I like to use Mastodon, but currently has a problem if posts use HTML entities if you later edit them (i.e., when you edit something with a " character it will change it into ")

### 5/5 — Update fixed all my problems

*2024-05-10*

Amazing concept, responsive developer, 5-stars

### 5/5 — Good for making threads

*2024-05-09*

Works great, haven’t had any problems at all. It’s a clean design that helps me manage making longer threads with ease.

* Server side updates to a post should be reflected when opening a thread.
* Follow button on About screen should always be enabled.

### 1.23 — 2024-11-13

New

* There’s a new Copy context menu action for drafts that copies text for all drafts in the thread to your clipboard. The text copy will be improved in a future update, so that line breaks are preserved.

Fixes

* Search should work reliably again.
* No unnecessary flashing when you add a reply to an existing thread.
* Server side updates to a post should be reflected when opening a thread.
* Follow button on About screen should always be enabled.

### 1.21 — 2024-07-11

**New**

- You can now edit already published posts! This is possible through the “Edit” option on a long press (right-click) or right swipe on a published post in the thread view. The scope of edits is currently restricted to the main text (post content). The ability to change media in your post as well as change post sensitivity/spoiler text will be added in a future update.
    - [Cmd + E] is the new keyboard shortcut for editing a post, and [Cmd + Shift + E] is the remapped shortcut to edit a thread’s drafts.
- Added a new setting in ”Threads” section that allows you to change the sort order of posts in a thread view. Defaults to ascending, which makes the first post in a thread appear at the top (and your drafts/composer at the bottom) i.e. what you’re used to. However you can flip this around to descending so your drafts appear at the top (composer above!) followed by the latest post down to the first.
- New icon from the supremely talented Andy Carolan. Thank you so much!

**Improvements**

- Published posts in a thread view are — as referenced above — now swipable. A right swipe gives you the option to edit the post, and a left swipe to delete the post from the server.
- “Posts” section in Settings renamed to “Threads” to better reflect its scope.
- Icons added to Avatar menu options.
- No longer says ”Queued” when referring to drafts in progress. This change in anticipation of scheduling capabilities to come, as the concept of queuing is more closely associated in this context. So, moving forward, anything not scheduled but drafted will be highlighted as a draft, and once scheduling comes into play, queued will indicated something that has been scheduled to be auto-posted later.

**Fixes**

- A thread that has had its replies forked will be elegantly merged when possible with no user input required.
- Editing drafts for a thread on a right-click should work again (was showing it as empty sometimes).
- The context menu for a thread on the Posts feed won’t incorrectly show a thread as having drafts to edit when there are actually none.
- Any published post with drafts should always show in the Drafts screen in the Replies section.
- If there’s no spoiler text, spoiler warning will not incorrectly show.
- Should not see a post duplicated in the Drafts screen’s replies when it’s a draft for a thread that’s only had a single post.

### 1.20 — 2024-07-05

**Improvements**

- Search will now work even when you don’t have it turned on for your server. This is building on the performance improvements introduced in a recent update to help with better start-up times. Search will prioritise looking through your posts locally, and make server calls as a secondary means to retrieve matches.

In order to extend search’s reach, scroll as far back in time in your Posts screen. This will cache all posts that have been loaded for better performance and deeper search. In a future update, I’ll make changes so you don’t need to do this yourself to get optimal search results.
- As a result of the above, search should be faster to execute. Additionally, its able to return results from further back in time too because it leverages the server for posts older than those that have been cached.

**Fixes**

- Discarding a draft reply to a published thread will actually delete it (and not just give the initial impression).
- Doing a search should never show results from a previous search.
- When you [Cancel] a search, you shouldn’t see ”No matches found” flash quickly.
- Cursor position shouldn’t unexpectedly ever jump to the end of text on a [return].
- Viewing a thread’s drafts should always display them in full (and not ever see them momentarily truncated before becoming visible in full).

### 1.19 — 2024-06-27

**Improvements**

- Posts in search results now highlight matching term.
- When you open a thread during a search, matching terms will now also show on posts there too.
- If there’s a trailing space in a search, it’s not considered when looking for matching posts.
- Tapping on the Posts icon on the Tab/Side Bar will scroll you back to the top. Will get it to behave similarly on other tabs in a future update.
- First post appears slightly higher up the screen.

**Fixes**

- When you login to a different account, posts from your previous account won’t show (this would previously correct itself on a new app launch).
- Dates appear instantly when starting the app (and don’t show after a split noticeable second).
- Doesn’t show wrong total number of posts when you tap on the post x/n button in composer’s toolbar.
- Pinned screen displays threads correctly (same as Posts screen). So no more duplicate posts, but instead shows the first + last posts in a thread (or the custom title instead of first post if one is set).
- No invisible tab bar when you’re editing a search.
- Keyboard focus isn’t auto-set when you tap on a search result to view its thread, and then navigate back.
