For over a decade this app made Twitter usable. Now that it’s just become Elon’s attempt to recoup the $44,000,000,000 he overspent, I have no use for the official app. It’s awful in every single way. Hoping Tweetbot works at some point in the future, but for now RIP Tweetbot. Thanks to Tapbots for all their hard-work. ### 5/5 — Thank You, Tapbots! *2023-01-15, version 7.2.1* After Twitter bought Tweetie and ruined it, Tweetbot stepped up to show that the mobile Twitter experience could still be fantastic. Twitter’s been slowly eroding the 3rd-party API for years now, so it was clear the end was inevitable. Now that it’s here, I feel bad for Tapbots. Tweetie is an amazing app, and has been the only way I’ve accessed Twitter on my phone for 11+ years. It’s the only app I’ve purchased a subscription for. I wasn’t considering moving to Mastodon, but now that Ivory has been announced, my Twitter days might be over. Thanks for being amazing, Tapbots! ### 5/5 — Save yourself from the main app *2022-12-23, version 7.1.1* Now that the main app is changing on a whim and utterly ruining the UI and recommendations algorithm, Tweetbot has once again become a neccessity for interacting with this website. It’s still not perfect due to API limitations but it’s way better than seeing those stupid view count numbers cluttering your feed. We can only hope twitter doesn’t kill API access out of jealousy. ### 3/5 — If you’re going to charge a subscription, you better update the app more often *2022-10-25, version 7.1.1* I have used Tweetbot for awhile now. Even buckled down and paid for the subscription, though I was kinda miffed about it. I am used to doing twitter this way. But, I’m kinda starting to think the developers are asleep at the wheel. I watch a regular rollout of new twitter and iOS features, and expect to see them roll out to this app a couple weeks (a month?) later. But nothing. It’s been 7 months since an update and things haven’t changed at all. Even the updates we did get 7 months ago are hidden in such obscure places as to be almost impossible to find. There was nothing tweaked for iOS 16. I hope the reason we are waiting so long for new features is because you have a big update coming next week. In the meantime, I think it’s finally time to start trying some different twitter apps. ### 3/5 — I won’t renew my subscription *2022-09-23, version 7.1.1* I’ve been in love with this app for years. I bought Tweetbot 5 the moment it was released. When Tweetbot 6 came out with a subscription plan, I hesitated for a while, but bought a yearly subscription because of the new features and cool themes. As a person who only uses Twitter as social media the quality of the app is important to me. But for the past few weeks I’ve been experiencing A LOT of lag when scrolling through tweets on my iPhone 11. I even deleted the app and reinstalled it to see if it was a cache problem. At first I thought maybe my phone was lagging but no other apps have this issue. In fact, the Tweetbot 5 that I’ve purchased years ago works like a charm. I prefer a smooth experience with lack of features, to a lot of features with major lags. So I will just use my Tweetbot 5 from now and won’t renew my yearly subscription if it’s not fixed. ### 5/5 — Happy to support Tapbots *2022-09-16, version 7.1.1* I’ve been using Tweetbot ever since the first version was released and have always been happy with it. Due to the high polish of the app and how often I use it, I have no issues paying yearly for it. I understand the developers have to eat, put a roof over their heads, and support their families. I also think the yearly subscription is a small price to pay for an app I use multiple times a day, every day. Tweetbot 6 is as great as ever. The new features are welcome and I look forward to where Tapbots takes the app in the future. ### 5/5 — No badges *2022-08-07, version 7.1.1* I have a paid subscription, I’ve contacted support in the past, I have the feature turned on, but I still don’t get badges working. I never got all the other features to work, which would’ve been nice, but would settle for badges. I’m still giving it a few stars because I do still like it better than the regular Twitter app. But now it even seems like I’m even missing tweets on my lists. ### 4/5 — App feels bored *2022-06-28, version 7.1.1* Having been using Tweetbot since it came out 11 years ago, it is an app I use daily and I’ve paid more than $50 to Tapbots over years, but new functions and design refinement of Tweetbot 6 doesn’t feel like warranting a $6/year paid subscription. If you can can live without Twitter API V2 features and use official app as substitute as I do, you’re probably better off just using Tweetbot 5 until it’s dead. Also, a $4.99 app every year or every other year, rather than a subscription just feel like more appropriate for a social networking app. Subscription adds unnecessary cumbersome management to end user and I really don’t need a social network app appearing in my already crowded App Store subscription section. That being said, it’s worth noting Tweetbot has vastly better app efficiency, data privacy policy comparing to official clients. And if you’re new to Tweetbot, it’s still a great purchase. Also, if a subscription means it will works cross platform, including Mac, that will be a big value add for end users too and I’ll happily subscribe. Hope Tapbots can consider. ### 3/5 — UX/UI can be weird and there are some bugs *2022-06-04, version 7.1.1* My motivation in trying this out was mainly to use Twitter without ads and without all the other bad stuff they use to hook you (curated timelines, suggested stuff, etc.). I'm happy that this app doesn't have any of that stuff and I'm fine with paying a small subscription for that. I also liked all the customizability. Going between all the other social media apps I never have trouble getting around, but going from the normal Twitter app to this I had some trouble. Mainly the way you open a thread is to swipe, which I thought was totally bizarre. I did get into the habit of it, but when I'd go to a different app I'd be used to doing it the weird swipe way and I'd do something else by mistake. There's other weird UI stuff, like when you go to someones account pictures don't show up until you scroll down and hit "show all tweets." I feel like there's lots of little slight misses like that that kinda make the experience a little clumsy. I also encountered a bug where a thread would not show replies sometimes. The reply count would be correct, but they wouldn't show up. This app seems cool, and I'd be excited to use it if all that stuff was fixed. ### 5/5 — The best twitter client for iPad hands down *2022-05-26, version 7.1.1* I have been using this app for a while now and absolutely love the interface and look of it. The way it deals with polls is great considering how difficult Twitter has made it for third party clients. The safari extension has been very useful too. My only wish is that there was a way to enlarge the little “pop-up” view that shows when you redirect from a safari page. the iPad screen is so big please let me use it! ### 3/5 — Enjoyable but needs work *2022-03-25, version 7.1.1* I think the app is pretty good for the most part. The look, aesthetics, and display are attractive. However, there are a few cons that I think bring down my rating for it. The fluidity of the app is a little clunky. I find myself having to press the home button multiple times to refresh to the top of the page which is a turn-off for me. Also, I do not like the tab bar at the bottom too much, I don't find it to be very helpful. Especially when I'm simply trying to find out who recently liked my tweet or mentioned me. I have to go to a certain section of my profile to see who liked/retweeted any of my tweets opposed to how the original Twitter app I have all of that information in my “Notification Tab” that is merely one click away. The way the app functions when trying to interact with a tweet is just rough all around tbh. For example, on the home screen, if I see a tweet that possibly has other people interacting with it and tuning in to a conversation, I cannot simply press on the tweet to see what's going on. Tweetbot makes me press on the settings of a tweet to look at the details of everything which is honestly time-consuming and annoying. I do believe these are easy fixes that would improve the functionality of the app. Overall, the functionality and the clunkiness of how the app operates need to improve in my opinion. Once these things are addressed and fixed, I will have a higher rating. ### 5/5 — I would likely have stopped using Twitter if not for this app *2022-03-12, version 7.1.1* The official Twitter app for iOS seems to be trying desperately hard to be a social network when that’s not how me (and I suspect most people) use the service. I would’ve likely stopped using Twitter long ago if not for this app. Tweetbot has made sensible design decisions at every turn. It’s a godsend. If you actually want to read every tweet in your feed (honestly can’t believe this is a real differentiator) this is the app for you. ### 4/5 — Streamlined *2022-03-03, version 7.1.1* Very streamlined for engagement. You’ll know all about your replies with their super easy to navigate UI. However, you won’t get much notice about likes or very many ways to follow them outside of a number count. (I’d really like to be able to expand on this in the analytic menu. Having such broad info isn’t very beneficial for a smaller page like mine.) I would also love to see translate added to the 3D Touch when hovering over a tweet rather than having to expand it > settings > translate for a 3 word sentence. Still mildly prefer the vanilla client (aside from their ordering and ads) because it feels more personal, but I’m giving TB an honest try! ### 5/5 — Great Alternative! *2022-03-02, version 7.1.1* I’ve been using Tweetbot since early 2010 and have loved it! Makes the Twitter experience so much better. Yes there are missing pieces now (full push notifications, etc.) but I’ll take it over Twitter’s ads and curated timeline. The latest update with background notifications makes it even better! However the “re-refreshed” ticker is a little small. I understand the removal of the arrow, but if it could be larger (similar to the previous refresh but without the arrow) it would be great! Keep up the great work Tapbots! 🤖 ### 5/5 — Absolutely satisfied *2022-01-26, version 6.9* My favorite two features in Tweetbot include the ability to translate tweets to English. I follow international leaders and sometimes don’t tweet in English. Secondly, immediate reader view when clicking article. Super simple and I love it. Two minor complaints? It seems a little slow fetching data when compared to official Twitter client and my custom Icon setting doesn’t work. I’ve been using Calcbot since it was introduced into the App Store many years ago and STILL my only go-to calc app. I was happy with the built in sounds, very familiar. Thanks again! ### 3/5 — Syncing between devices is troublesome *2021-12-21, version 6.7.3* Tweetbot is one of the few applications I’ve purchased as a subscription, mostly because for several years it’s been the only Twitter client worth using. It’s dissapointing that sync between devices is still not up to snuff. I should be able to pick up where I left off on my phone, and resume on my iPad (and vice versa). In practice, this doesn’t work, especially if I’ve gone a day or two without opening the application. Another annoyance, it seems there’s an arbitrary number of messages that you can fall behind (around 1500). Fall behind more than that, and your timeline is truncated. This could be the fault of twitter’s api, and out of control of the developer. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Disappointed with paying subscriptions *2022-03-06, version 7.1.1* I have to say that this is sad because I have used this app for many years now since it came out and the company was known for their Utilities app’s once I found out they were doing an Twitter client I was on board, but after many years. I wouldn’t mind paying for a new version of the app every year, so now playing for a subscription and keeping all the most useful features behind a pay wall call subscription is not ok with me at all I can’t support it. I don’t have any type of subscription because I don’t believe in them, I don’t even pay for DLC or micro transactions in the video games I play and love the most, so I would have rather be charge up front for this update than being looked out of the features that matters the most to me and many other users it doesn’t matter how cheap the subscription is. I just don’t appreciate and like subscription I would have love for the developer to let the previous version of the app users that they were going to lose some of their features after the update. Not recommend, and I’m sorry but this update is trash great app though, just don’t like and appreciate the new subscription model they had adopted, but hey a company needs to make a profit in order to survive no other choice. Without buying a monthly or yearly subscription, you get a read-only version of Twitter. Can’t like or retweet, can’t post tweets. What a waste of time. Out of curiousity, I went ahead and purchased a subscription to see what amazing and magical abilities this app was going to give me over the official Twitter app, and I was very disappointed. Not does the app still look and feel like it was written a decade ago, but aside from not seeing ads and being able to do some more advanced filtering, it didn’t knock my socks off. And those aren’t features I need, especially if I have to pay to get them. Canceled my subscription and uninstalled the app. I won’t give Tweetbot another shot. ### 1/5 — Another subscription… ugh *2021-08-04, version 6.1.2* Been a huge fan of Tweetbot for years. Have gotten used to paying $6-$10 every year or two for an upgrade and always happy to do so. However, I can’t move forward with another subscription. As many have mentioned, we’re already overwhelmed by subscription services and the management/ end user experience of managing them is a pain. I’ll be looking for a replacement Twitter app for the first time in years. Tapbots- please consider adding a one time payment option. I’d be happy to even pay $10-$12 for the one time option. But please don’t force all your users into another tiresome subscription. ### 1/5 — Tweetbot Goodbye no regrets *2021-07-12, version 6.1.2* It is disappointing, and unfair to take money and take advantage in this way. I was one of the few who bought the two previous versions of the weetbot app and would recommend it to others in all social media, and it was worth the money that we paid, first of all, and we were more loyal than you and wiser that we continued to use it despite the progress And other applications developed on it (in a short time) after the fourth application version and with many steps, and you could have reduced the payment fee for those who bought the previous two versions at the very least, or by updating the old version without another application for the program, and all applications do that. ### 1/5 — Beyond Poor *2021-06-24, version 6.1.2* This application does not comply with A11Y standards or work properly with voiceover enabled. I have communicated with developers several times over the years and they have always promised to resolve issues, but never do. How is it expected that visually impaired individuals will use the app when alternative descriptions are missing for buttons and items and numerous elements are either skipped or not spoken aloud. Additionally, tabs and settings can only be selected if VoiceOver is deactivated. Clearly they either don't know how to build accessible apps or care to do so! I strongly discouraged the use of this application and encourage others to do so until they ensure it is accessible to all, regardless of their disability. ### 1/5 — Hasn’t kept up with modern Twitter usage - limited functionality *2021-02-07, version 6.0.2* I was a huge fan of Tweetbot 1 and 2 many years ago, using it after Tweetie got bought out. When the newest version came out, I really wanted to support and love it, instantly buying the 1 year subscription. It made me realize how much Twitter has grown in the past decade - because Tweetbot is lacking all the most important functionality. You can’t read through threads - replies appear just as they did in 2011. You can’t even view quote retweets of tweets - which are the most interesting part of discussion in my usage (juicy ratio-ed discourse - where you get to read the range of perspectives on one controversial tweet). In addition, it seems to have constant network issues, and fails to post when the regular Twitter app has no problem. It requires a long press to view the individual tweet and see replies to it - making it slow and awkward to follow any conversation at all. It seems meant exclusively to view tweets in a linear format and not engage in discussion. The only advantage is no ads - which sadly makes me wish Twitter officially offered a no ads subscription. ### 2/5 — Fix the video issue *2021-09-20, version 6.3* I hate to write this review, because I love this app and have been paying for it in various forms since the 1st version came out, but videos _will_ _not_ _play_ in this app reliably and all I get from the dev is a shrug about it. Same tweet, video will play in Twitterrific fine, it’ll play in the Twitter official app fine, but in Tweetbot, I get a loading indicator then an error. And it’s happening to the majority of videos I try to play, on multiple devices. Everything else about it is as great as it’s ever been, it’s the best-looking app in terms of UI and typography by far, but the video thing is a deal-killer. Ending my subscription. ### 2/5 — Early access, at Full price *2021-05-12, version 6.1.1* Ive been using Tweetbot 5 or whatever the version prior to this new subscription based Tweetbot. Ive had some issues here and there over the years but they have usually been resolved eventually. When i heard of a new Tweetbot i decided to jump all in. Even at the price of admission with the new features i was excited for a breath of fresh air in Tweetbot. Then i subbed with the free trial and off i went….my excitement quickly vanished like an accidental alcohol spill it evaporated in mere seconds. Looks like nothing has changed except for one thing, the subscription price. Im not against subscriptions if the usefulness of the app is warranted (June Cloud owns me for life with Deliveries) and i will gladly pay it to ensure the devs get paid enough to keep working on the app. However i found that even in early access, its just not warranted. So i did was any other user would do, cancel subscription, delete app and re-download the old one. Well thats where I was wrong. The app is slowly falling apart to the point where media no longer plays correctly if at all. When i asked for support, they said i needed Tweetbot 6 to remedy this as the API has changed and thats all good, except you have to pay to use the new version. So im basically left with a broken Tweetbot 5 and and my only recourse is to pay the $5.99/year for Tweetbot 6. Off to the official twitter app i go! Thanks for all the years TapBots, but today i say good bye. ### 2/5 — Sorry, you priced me out *2021-04-12, version 6.1* I’m always willing to pay for a quality app and Tweetbot has always been a quality app. I’ve purchased and used it since v2. It’s been nearly 5 years since v5 was released. As a developer myself, I know it shouldn’t take 5 years to develop a social media app, especially when cosmetically it hasn’t changed much. I’m not sure what Twitter v2 API offers, but v5 of Tweetbot has always suited my needs. If this was fixed price (and fair) I’d pay, but I do not support subscription models as a rule. It’s bad business. If it takes 5 more years to develop v7 then I’ve paid $30 for this app. I don’t pay that much for apps. Sorry. I’ll stick with v5 until it doesn’t work anymore and if you’re still pushing subscription models I’ll move to a different app. ### 2/5 — 🤦🏻‍♂️ *2021-01-27, version 6.0* It’s the same app as last version, except now you have to pay $1/month or $6/year. Literally nothing in terms of look and feel of this has changed from current app. Still these giant bezels in the app on top and bottom despite bigger iPhone screens. So no full screen viewing. No additional themes, colors, options to choose own colors, etc. Nothing. Kinda pathetic. For me this is the worst of what a dev can do - bait you into starting to pay for a subscription for an app you already paid for with “improvements under the hood” and nothing else. Updated with new API doesn’t do it for me if you don’t make real changes. Website says some changes maybe coming later. Meanwhile last version 5 hadn’t been updated with any type of changes since that came out in years. Have little faith there will be any changes to function or look. Sorry. Not usually a pessimist. But just going based on dev’s history with this app ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — The best Twitter app *2023-01-20, version 7.2.1* I feel for the developers of this app. To be cut off completely from the API without any communication is unforgivable. This was my go to app for Twitter. The interface was intuitive and easy to navigate. The official Twitter app is crap and I’m not using it. This has been my last straw with Twitter. I’m closing my Twitter account after I pull my data. What a shame one man, Elon Musk, can destroy so much. In any regard, thanks to the folks at Tapbots for a great app that is now unusable through no fault of their own. ### 5/5 — Thank you devs! *2023-01-19, version 6.8* Tweetbot has easily been my most used app over the past decade. I bought the first iteration as it was released back in 2011 and have used it ever since. The app has been such a delight to use and we were fortunate to have software of such caliber. It’s truly terrible that the new Twitter team has decided to immediately revoke access to the API with no regard for developers or users. I will fondly remember using Tweetbot daily. Thank you so much Tapbots team! ### 5/5 — The Best, and ONLY, Way Twitter Made Sense *2023-01-19, version 7.2.1* I do not understand how anyone deals with the algorithmic timeline on Twitter’s website or official App. I have used Tweetbot for ages and to see it sunset’d in such a ham fisted and disrespectful way has put me off Twitter. The TapBots team had no warning from Twitter that this was going ti happen and then 5 days after the fact, we all got a nice Tweet from Twitter support declaring “these devs broke the rules lulz!” Inexcusable. My experience using Mastodon thus far has been splendid, albeit sparse on content since not a ton of folks are there yet. Hopefully with time, we’ll have a great community there. RIP Tweetbot. I’ll gladly fork over money for Ivory the first opportunity I get. I would pay much more than the low annual subscription for it—it is that useful and valuable. Right now, Twitter has unethically shut down third-party app access, including Tweetbot. I’ve been forced to use Twitter’s ‘official’ app—thanks, I hate it. I hope Twitter will come to their senses and re-enable Tweetbot’s API access—but it seems unlikely, at least under current leadership. Until that changes, I am thrilled to be using the early access version of Ivory—the Mastodon client from the good people behind Tweetbot. Please be sure to build in a tip option into that app! I’m already using the TestFlight for Ivory and it’s already my favorite Mastodon client. It’s been too important a part of my life for the last decade, and still provided too much value, for me to quit cold turkey. At least I thought. Since Twitter cut access to third party apps, I haven’t returned. Twitter’s official app and functionality are atrocious, and seem designed specifically to make the experience of accessing the community worse. I know I cut my self among those who have left Twitter, though not for any philosophical reason. Simply put, without the filter of Tweetbot, it is just a bad product.
