### 4/5 — Ok but not worth the money

*2020-07-12*

So I got this app cause I wanted to work on my kerning and leading. I thought this app was going to be really interactive and more of a game to help me learn but it is more informative and not very helpful. There is a kerning “game” but the app does not have any information on what to do with the app. Not worth the few bucks

### 4/5 — Crashes

*2020-02-24*

Lots of features will insta-crash, like “the basics”, not ideal, but the features I needed it for work right now, and are very good

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for using Typography Insight. Sorry to hear about the crashes. Could you please try updating iOS to 13 and try again? Dark mode support might cause issues on previous iOS

### 3/5 — Useful

*2019-10-17*

Hugely disappointing that we can’t use Adobe Typekit with an Enterprise ID. After reading there was now Adobe integration I purchased the app...but I feel I’m not getting full use unless I can access my own type library.

Presumably I’ll be told this is an Adobe licensing issue and not Typography Insight?

### 4/5 — Very cool

*2018-03-14*

I would not say that this is an instructional app, but rather a “cliffs notes” accessory that is EXTREMELY handy to have on-hand at all times. Very well done and well designed. All killer, no filler.

### 4/5 — For those who loves type

*2017-03-19*

An well design app for font and type lovers!

### 4/5 — Typography Insight

*2017-03-15*

This is a great application for those who are interested in the study of Typography. The app title is a perfect description as you can gain insight into the study of Typography with a learning basics section, a section on the main examples of fonts and styles used in our everyday life, and even learn directly with practice activities contained inside. The design itself is a compliment to the application as you can easily navigate the clear white interface that allows you to hone in on the visuals presented without any external visual noise getting in your way. The app wouldn't be as effective with bad design and it also would be somewhat ironic if it had.

### 4/5 — Could use some more typefaces

*2015-10-08, version 3.3*

Great app. Very helpful for beginners.

### 5/5 — Everything Type

*2015-01-15*

It is has everything you need to know about type face and font. A great resource!

### 5/5 — Nice update!

*2014-12-21, version 3.1*

Great to see the update with new fonts! Nice companion tool for the students. I really like the overlaying compare feature - Helvetica vs Arial

### 4/5 — Great for teaching

*2014-12-18*

I have had this app for a while now, and I always found it really useful aid for teaching.
Typography and all the details and classification of type, can be a dry subject and a dry, empty ditch blocking the way to learning for many young people and students. This app, helps to bridge that gap by making the subject come alive.
What I like best of all, is the way that it uses the qualities and capabilities of the device to bring the subject to life. Books look great, but often books on Typography get left on the shelves. With this app I can project to a room full of students and show them right in front of their eyes what's going on. Its live and its interactive and it's really useful. Great price too.

### 3/5 — It's ok, but could be better

*2013-09-28*

Underwhelmed with typography choices....
It would be nice if one could do typeface comparisons within a paragraph e.g. Title and body copy. See how two typefaces could work together. This could help folks new to typography (like myself). Maybe that option already exist I just have not found it.
This app certainly has potential to become a great one

### 3/5 — Adequate

*2012-12-05*

This app does everything it says it will, but could increase its usefulness with the addition of more fonts that can be examined and compared (the current version contains only 16.) That being said, the fonts it does contain are a very well-selected and diverse group, including sans-serifs like Gill Sans, Futura and Helvetica as well as timeless classics like Times New Roman and Bodoni. Although Typography Insight proves to be a fun and educational tool for beginners who wish to learn a few basics about typography, more intermediate or experienced users might come away disappointed after tinkering with the app for two or three minutes.

### 4/5 — Nice app

*2012-10-23*

Includes classic historic fonts like Palatino, Bodoni, and Baskerville. Some great tools for comparing fonts, zooming in on specific characters, and discovering the measurements within individual characters. Check out the website first before buying to see if this interests you. Would be much cooler if you could import fonts.

### 5/5 — Great for the students

*2012-04-26*

As a student in design school, it is just great to see gorgeous historical typefaces in large size with retina display. Might be not enough for the professional designers but, definitely great app for the students in design school. Can be used together with textbook.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Lousy

*2017-03-18*

Useless app, and a typography app shouldn't have such ugly typographical errors.

**Developer response:** Hi Lousy, it would be really appreciated if you could let me know any errors.
Thank you very much!

### 1/5 — Too limited

*2012-07-27, version 2.2*

I like the basic idea, but it was a waste of money because it doesn't include enough fonts.

### 1/5 — Misleading…

*2012-04-15, version 2.1*

It's not what you hope for.

### 1/5 — $2.00 for this???

*2012-04-12, version 2.1*

Disappointed with the number of fonts in this app. Was expecting much more - don't waste your money here.

### 1/5 — can't get home!

*2011-06-16, version 1.11*

seems like a good idea I think but I chose the learn option in the app then there was no way to get back to home page or anywhere else!

### 2/5 — Not worth £3

*2020-02-18*

Looks promising, and very nice, but crashes upon attempting to use all but “typeface anatomy tool”. Love to use it but can’t. Waste of money.

**Developer response:** Thank you very much for using Typography Insight. Sorry to hear about the crashes. Could you please try updating iOS to 13 and try again? Dark mode support might cause issues on previous iOS.

### 2/5 — Avis

*2015-02-10*

Ce n'est rien de vraiment nouveau

### 2/5 — Great idea, poor execution

*2012-04-18*

I'm not quite sure who this app is supposed to appeal to. There are a number of sections that would appear to be lessons about the fundamentals of typography, but they consist of little more than dictionary definitions of terms like 'font family' and pictures of fonts; seeing an example of a Humanist font doesn't mean anything when there's no explanatory text of what a Humanist font *is*. And if you know enough about typography to not need the explanation, you'll know enough to be outraged at the terrible rendering job of nearly all the type in the app, even on a Retina iPad. When you manually zoom in the text looks great, but at the default zoom level there is a disappointing level of poor visuals.

The one saving grace is the Type Inspector section, which is actually pretty nifty. It essentially lets you pick any of the default iOS fonts (a solid, if mundane collection) and look at all of its glyphs at enjoyably large zoom levels, all controlled with wonderfully smooth pinch-zoom gestures. Fortunately, since you're intended to zoom past the default zoom level, this feature manages to avoid the rendering issues the rest of the app's typography suffers from.

### 2/5 — Not much here

*2012-01-25*

Maybe I was expecting too much by the other reviews, but I was not that impressed. This basically takes a few (very few) pages from a standard typography book and puts them in an app environment. Not much use to me. With a little imagination and a little more time, they might have made something interesting with this. Also, it only uses a small number of fonts.

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2011-06-22, version 1.12*

Decent concept, poorly developed. Wasted my money. Btw I would double check Caslon and Garamond.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Suggestion...

*2019-06-02*

Pinch to zoom on the overlay comparison should allow for resizing only the left or right glyph (if gesture is conducted on the edge rather than center of the screen).

### 5/5 — Very interesting app

*2019-03-29*

Just a neat series of little interactive displays that teach you all sorts of things you never knew about typography. A fun relaxing app with a clean, intuitive interface and a pleasant design. Makes you wish more apps would follow suit. Look forward to future updates.

### 5/5 — Brilliant Introduction to Typography

*2017-08-25*

My father was an old-time Compositor who worked with wood-and-lead blocks. This App has helped me to understand his craft *and* explain my preference for particular forms of type... Oh yes; it also clearly explains the difference between 'font' and 'typeface'!

Love it!

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2017-03-14*

As an aspiring typographer myself, I find this app extremely useful. Not only does it have references, complete access to Adobe Typekit, and 3 categories of information, but there are practice activities where you can get better at kerning, measuring, comparing, etc. I would highly recommend this to anybody interested in Typography.

Best Wishes

### 5/5 — Awesome App!!!

*2016-05-14, version 3.4*

This app is very informative and educational. Excellent resource for anyone interested in typography or type design.

### 5/5 — Well worth $1.99

*2015-09-12, version 3.3*

Excellent study companion to use with Bringhurst. Scales and displays beautifully and reinforces basic differences between groups and individual faces.

### 5/5 — Great app for beginners

*2015-06-15, version 3.3*

I'm just getting started with typography and with the book I'm reading, I've found this app to be really useful as a handy reference.

### 5/5 — The sum of all books / A soma de todos os livros

*2015-04-24*

Recommended for all GOOD design student / Recomendado a todo BOM estudante de design

### 5/5 — Fantastic!
