### 3/5 — App is good but an Advertising Banner ad took me to false “your phone is infected” web site

*2026-07-11*

A useful app overall and so no complaints there, but I had a worrying experience with one of the in app ads. A banner ad made it look like my iPhone settings needed attention and so I pressed what I thought was an icon for the app, I was instead redirected to a fake “your iPhone has viruses scam” page. The app is useful but the advertising needs to be better monitored, as this could easily mislead less experienced users. Until that’s addressed I’d be cautious.

**Developer response:** Sorry to hear this. The ads are provided by Google so I will contact them to report this. Users can also report any suspicious adverts. This is not something I’ve had an issue with in 14 years of building this app, so I hope it’s a one off and I apologise for any inconvenience.

### 4/5 — Great app, very accurate

*2025-01-09*

Overall fantastic and very helpful for working out necessary salary especially pro rata. The only thing I would say which could improve is to allow deductions for both student loan and postgraduate loan together as it only allows you to choose one of the other so you have to do the calculations twice. Other than that it’s a fantastic app

### 5/5 — The best app to calculate income

*2023-11-08, version 4.0*

I have tried several but this one is the one you need. Works to the “.”. Very helpful app. It updates with the latest values and rules.

### 5/5 — Superb - the only UK app that does what I need

*2023-10-08*

It’s a rarity I leave any reviews never mind a 5-star review. However this app is excellent, flexible, accurate….it does exactly what I need and I’ve downloaded plenty of apps in this salary/tax category. And the support is second-to-none….its all personally managed and really helpful.
Don’t waste your time with any other app - get this one.

### 5/5 — Amazing app

*2023-05-03*

Really amazing app, very useful and accurate with new features added often. Dev is really responsive to any bugs of feature requests

### 5/5 — Best UK Tax app

*2023-02-16*

I have been using this for a few years now and have also compared it to other apps and this is by far the easiest to configure and accurate to within pennies (at least in my case).

Please try this out and give Rhys the encouragement to continue developing this each year.

### 5/5 — Best App on the Store

*2022-12-23*

This is hands down the best app on the store, I’ve been using it for years and it’s been so helpful working things out, most recently how pension contributions affect my salary.

**Developer response:** Thanks for such a great review, you’ve made my morning. Glad you like the app and I really appreciate your support.

### 5/5 — Excellent App

*2022-10-03, version 3.7*

Very good App very configurable with really clear outputs.

### 5/5 — Brilliant App! Worth paying £4.99 for lifetime of no ads!

*2022-08-27, version 3.7*

Very accurate salary calculator and has many options to add salary sacrifice, pensions and so much more!
Highly recommend this app!

### 5/5 — Exactly what I was looking for

*2022-07-09*

Pro edition with salary comparison is great.
Good details to all calculations

**Developer response:** Thanks for supporting our app :)

### 2/5 — Inaccurate income tax and national insurance

*2022-06-26, version 3.7*

When you compare the results that the app calculated with the payslips or our own spreadsheet calculation, the income tax and national insurance values are incorrect. Please double check.

### 5/5 — A great App.

*2022-06-18, version 3.7*

A great App.

### 5/5 — Still brilliant …

*2022-03-01*

I left a five star review around five years ago and I’ve not had the need, nor been tempted to, try any other similar app. This has always been accurate to within pennies of my actual take home pay. I now have two part time jobs with very different pension arrangements and tax codes but it handles both with a breeze, developer(s) certainly know their stuff. Anyway I felt this app duly deserves another 5 star review as with the raid on our salaries about to happen more people may be looking for this sort of thing; they don’t get more accurate, detailed and user friendly than this. Don’t be put off if the tax year 22/23 is not showing just yet, developer has always updated it in a timely manner and there’s still a month to go at the time of writing!

**Developer response:** Thanks very much for the great review Joey - new FY update will be released in just a few days! Cheers

### 5/5 — Get it now!

*2022-02-22*

I needed a salary calculator for when I was living in london as I was not always near a desktop when I had queries about my earnings. This app is fantastic and can calculate earnings down to the number in almost any circumstance. If you loved listentothetaxman you will love this!

**Developer response:** Thanks for the great review! :)

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Ads

*2025-06-03, version 4.3*

Too many adds cluttering up the screen and popping up that you can’t close.

### 1/5 — Don’t bother!

*2022-10-11, version 3.7*

If you want to use the free version, you get to watch adverts every time you put your salary info in. Then you get pestered to upgrade .. and if you don’t, it’ll ‘refresh’ and wipe all your salary info back to zero - so it doesn’t actually keep it in the app.
If you do upgrade, there’s actually better salary apps out there for less!

Verdict - don’t even bother installing it.

### 1/5 — Not flexible

*2022-06-20, version 3.7*

I couldn’t even find weekly hour adjustment. Very uncomfortable to use

### 1/5 — My god the adverts!

*2022-03-18, version 3.5*

Seems like a decent app but oh my god the adverts. Full screen loud videos with every second update on the screen.

Then the adverts that bounce open the App Store with some random bubble cash rubbish.

Seriously, fix your adverts, you may argue its “not your fault”, more the ad networks, but they are in /your/ app and giving a terrible experience in your app.

### 1/5 — Rubbish, only ads!

*2019-09-30, version 2.9*

Absolute crap. After 20 secs, starts playing ads. Unusable. Avoid.

### 1/5 — Too many ads

*2019-06-04, version 2.9*

Looks like a useful app but adverts popping up constantly.

### 1/5 — Rubbish 🤪

*2018-04-17, version 2.8*

Really appalling. So un user friendly. Gives wrong information. Tells you your salary per month is actually per annum & vice versa.
It’s not hard. Get it right. The app I had before I lost my last iPhone was way superior and so much easier to use but I can’t find it again. My fault but grrrrrrr

### 1/5 — Good but not user friendly for a non technical person like me.

*2018-03-02, version 2.5*

Good but not user friendly for a non technical person like me. Also there is no guidance for how to change your pension settings manually unless I am not looking it correctly.

### 2/5 — Was great, now filled with intrusive ads

*2023-02-22, version 3.8*

Used to find this really useful, tried to use it this year and suddenly boarded by apps.
Terrible experience now

### 2/5 — The Ads!!!

*2023-02-17, version 3.8*

Within 20 seconds or so of first using the app, up comes an advert. Delete

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2026-05-04*

Lost count how many years I have been using this app but it’s unrivalled. The developer is always open to suggestions about features. Very accurate in the figures it generates. Well worth the £6.99 if anyone reason this is considering it.

**Developer response:** Thanks! Lots more features on their way too! :)

### 5/5 — Superb!

*2025-08-08, version 4.3*

Love the tax system graphic. Excellent app.

### 5/5 — Fantastic app

*2025-05-03*

I was using other app and it stopped working so I migrated to this one. It is fantastic, there is a deviation of £5 compared to what I’m earning, so nothing major… I do recommend it to anyone wanting to know about their salary and the taxes they will be paying. Very good app, congratulations

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2025-02-01, version 4.2*

Easy to use and really helpful

### 5/5 — Superb - the only UK app that does what I need

*2024-10-20*

It’s a rarity I leave any reviews never mind a 5-star review. However this app is excellent, flexible, accurate….it does exactly what I need and I’ve downloaded plenty of apps in this salary/tax category. And the support is second-to-none….its all personally managed and really helpful. Don’t waste your time with any other app - get this one.

### 5/5 — The best by far

*2024-08-17*

This is by far and away the best and most accurate UK salary calculator. I’ve stopped even using online calculators from other providers as I believe this is easily superior. Well worth the pro version, it gives you full control over the intricacies of our complex tax system to give you a true result. Indispensable.

**Developer response:** Thank you Alan.

### 5/5 — Doesn’t retain settings

*2024-04-30, version 4.2*

Whenever I go back to use this I’ve got to re-enter some details. E.g the fact that I want to use Scottish tax rates and not the default ones.

### 5/5 — Excellent and easy

*2024-03-07, version 4.1*

Quality tax calculation app

### 5/5 — Appalled to see significant cookies & data sharing with so many companies

*2024-03-05, version 4.1*

To repeat “This is a great app, LOVED it for years.” I wouldn’t have complained about the GDPR issues if I didn’t have strong positive feelings about your app. I believe your app is the high bar for which others should aim.

This is why I felt so strongly that your previous implementation of the cookie screen (that you accurately state many others use) was so egregious.

As with all other uses of this pre-rolled cookie UI it didn’t place any obvious ’do not consent’ anywhere near the ‘accept’ option which is a huge no no in the GDPR world (more specifically PECR). It also allowed the so called ‘consented legitimate interests’ which is an oxymoron as no such legitimate interest can be a consent nor can the things each claimed be a legitimate interest.

I am very glad you took my points on board and addresses them all. I have gone back and checked and now you are legally compliant.

I tell people all the time that your app is the only one to choose for all salary information, so it meant those people who also know my qualifications related to GDPR and the DPA before began questioning me as to how I could recommend the app.

I personally understand the difficulties vs the passion for an app project that you sometimes feel isn’t worth the time when you get criticised. I did the same before I fell very ill and now have little time left. But, constructive criticism, however disappointingly written should be taken onboard and if valid, should be addressed. You did that.

I am now 100% happy with the app and congratulate you for listening, seeing through your likely annoyance and rectify something that you may not have realised would get you in legal peril as well as reducing confidence in your users.

GDPR placing a necessary burden on you even if it is third parties that do the collection of data as it is you that used the thing that enables that collection of data. If something you add causes any data collection you are responsible for it. Thank you for being a great developer.

This is a great app, loved it for years. However, there is no excuse for having so much data shared with 3rd parties. There is no excuse to have a cookie consent system that includes the pretence that some things are “legitimate interest” when they clearly breach GDPR by capturing and using data that is not fundamental to the operation of the app and instead collecting data of the user and sharing it with companies who are illegally obtaining it.

I’ll be generous to the app developer and hope this is ignorance that will be quickly rectified by removal of all such data sharing and ridiculous pre-ticked consent passed off as legitimate interests. I lecture on the GDPR and the DPA before it.

This is so clearly a blatant refusal to abide by the law dressed up as fake compliance. It has to go and within 28 days or I’ll be reporting it. Replace it with an honest policy where consent is required for any data sharing, no pre-ticked boxes, the user should have to opt-in by law not opt out.

No individual opt out choices, they contravene the law. You can’t pretend the obligation is on each of the individual companies that you are unfortunately sharing data with, it is you as the service provider that controls if any data is shared and must be law be turned OFF by default and individual consent the user can turn ON by choice and withdraw consent if they originally gave it any anytime in the future.
You’re opening yourself up to significant fines and worse, every user lawfully demanding that you provide a Subject Access Request for all the data you hold on them, which includes all the data you shared with other organisations as YOU are on the hook for liability. You will only have 30 days to fully comply or be liable to further fines. Appalling choice.

### 5/5 — Exceptional Developer Response and Anticipated App Update

*2023-12-30*

I recently reached out to the developer regarding the incorporation of the NI January 2024 updates. I was delighted to receive a prompt response informing me that he is presently coding these changes. This swift and efficient communication is commendable, and I eagerly await the forthcoming release.
