### 4/5 — Ultra-Lingua French - English Dictionary

*2026-06-08*

I have experience with the U/L German version to assist me with a Duo lingo course. I find it very helpful. It’s listings are quite comprehensive, if you mis-spell a word it suggests options, if you type in part of a verb it tells you which verb it is & on the other side of the screen you can open up the full verb conjugation.
Having recently learnt of an impending family wedding in Geneva I decided to revive my OU French diploma skills and what a revelation Ultra-Lingua’s French dictionary is compared with the clunky old software I have from ‘way back when’ … it’s so much easier to use. Same comments apply as for the German version .. plus on the verb table side it gives not only simple conjugations but also the reciprocal versions.
It’s not faultless … the German version doesn’t do reciprocal verbs only the simple versions and in some cases where German has moved on it still gives spellings with the hard S where modern usage is to use ‘ss’ instead.
Over all £15 well spent as evidenced by the fact I now have German, Spanish & French versions on my iPad.

### 4/5 — One issue

*2024-03-07*

I’ve been using this app for years and I like it. But it’s got one major flaw in its verb conjugations. The negative past-tense of pronominal verbs in passé composé are, every one of them, incorrect. "Je ne me suis demandé pas" instead of "Je ne me suis pas demandé" for example.

### 2/5 — Disappointed

*2021-02-15*

I’m sure this app has many good features, but I have 2 complaints: 1)I noticed a poor translation in the App Store example. Parler de quelqu’un means to speak about someone NOT something. So I don’t trust their translations. But I bought it for the verb tense translations, only to find that 2)they don’t provide them for the more complicated tenses. For me, this dictionary is superfluous.

### 4/5 — Excellent dictionnaire

*2020-04-03*

Excellent dictionnaire, précis et détaillé dans ses propositions de traduction

### 3/5 — Bien , mais ...

*2020-01-06*

Il manque des mots et surtout les expressions !
Sinon c’est super !

### 2/5 — abandonware

*2017-03-31*

I really liked the look of these apps when they came out, and I bought the Mac version too because of the hotkey feature to define selected words. But this is abandonware people. They haven't done anything to these in years and there is a bug in the French one that won't change contexts properly when languages are reversed. You've been warned.

### 5/5 — V good

*2017-03-18*

Excellent

### 5/5 — Wonderful dictionaries!

*2017-03-05*

I have been using the French, Spanish and Italian dictionaries of Ultralingua almost daily for several years. I speak and teach French and Spanish and am learning Italian and absolutely love having these excellent dictionaries at my fingertips on my ever present i-pod!

### 5/5 — Indespensible

*2017-02-13*

I've used this app to help me in reading French novels for years and think its scope and layout are superb.

### 5/5 — I like my French

*2016-11-14*

Learning French

### 4/5 — Excellent French-english dictionary

*2016-10-28*

I can find most of the words I'm looking for, and the ability to search on any part of speech is really useful. It's really easy to move from definitions to the verb tenses and back again. It would be a real bonus if it were possible to report "missing" words from within the app. On occasion I want to look up a word but it is missing from the dictionary. Otherwise excellent

### 5/5 — Un bon outil

*2016-09-27*

Cette application est très pratique et facile à utiliser. A recommander auprès de ceux qui ont besoin d'un bon dictionnaire que l'on peut toujours avoir sous la main.

### 4/5 — Learning French

*2016-08-22*

I like this app because of the examples for conjugations. However, I purchased this app because I thought that there were sentence examples. I am still learning how to use this app. Perhaps, I haven't figured out how to find the examples for sentences.

### 5/5 — Stalling solved

*2016-08-05*

Stalling problems noted in previous review have all been resolved in latest update. App works fast and flawlessly. Well done!

### 5/5 — Très bien

*2016-04-07, version 2.6*

Inclut la prononciation en phonétique, même off-line. À recommander

### 5/5 — C'est bon!

*2016-02-15, version 2.6*

Très utile. Bien composée. Tous les mots que j'en ai besoin.

### 4/5 — Trusty tool for years

*2016-01-03, version 2.6*

Use it all the time as I read French newspapers or listen to France Info. The UI has improved over the years and is rather attractive. One quibble is that the app icon looks dated and could be improved upon. (Would be easier to find in my apps if it were more distinctive).

The language coverage is quite good in French although it lacks certain slang words.

I like the favorites feature too.

### 5/5 — Extremely useful

*2015-12-28, version 2.6*

Well worth the price! Much better than even a fairly comprehensive print dictionary and far easier to use. I love it!

### 4/5 — Very useful app - could be more comprehensive

*2015-12-22*

I use this all the time for French to English (both ways). Generally pretty good but sometimes lets me down on more obscure words. Works fast. I seem to have a second app without a language - don't know why. Good on conjugation. Recommended until a bilingual Chambers comes along.

### 5/5 — Good app

*2015-09-04*

Very good French English dictionary, like the conjugations !! The app. Speaks the French if required, You receive both iPad and iPhone versions. I use the apps for learning French with the excellent duolingo, app. language course.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Does not work i ios7.

*2013-10-24, version 2.4.1*

The app won't open. It crashes immediately.

### 1/5 — Latest Update Won't Open in iOS 7

*2013-10-18, version 2.4.1*

Cannot open the app (closes immediately). iOS 7, iPhone 5.

### 1/5 — I tried the new design GUI - no thanks

*2013-07-18*

BRING BACK OLD INTERFACE - as option perhaps. OR FIVE NE MY MONEY BACK!!

The old design had its flaws (too thick, more taps necessary) but it was efficient. Now u have to scroll kilometres and miles of text to get to what I need and it's not good on eye too.

### 1/5 — The Ultralingua update

*2013-06-15, version 2.3*

This update is terrible and has wrecked a very useful dictionary. Getting at verb conjugation is a special nightmare. Please un update asap. I really wanted to give it zero stars.

### 1/5 — Not any better than previous version!

*2013-06-11*

A proverb says tha the best is the enemy of the good. I think that it is what happened with the Ultralingua dictionnaries (I have three of them), they are surely not more useful than the previous version!
And before I could chose the right one instantly by looking at the flag on their respective icon. Now I need to put on my reading glasses to read the barely readable text on the icon!

### 1/5 — Awful update

*2013-06-06*

This used to be a fantastic dictionary. The update on 29th May has made it unusable. Horrible typeface choices make the app very hard to read. What was a very simple and effective verb conjugator has been made more complicated to use.

This is the first time I've ever felt the need to write a review. The update is awful, it's ruined a once fantastic application.

### 1/5 — Interface inexploitable

*2013-02-05, version 1.5.3*

C'est une joke ?! Les développeurs ont-ils testé l'appli ? Nouvelle interface dans tous les sens, le clavier numérique est incomplet .... L'application était remarquable : elle est devenue inexploitable. Merci de corriger le tir rapidement, le produit n'étant plus à la hauteur de son prix.
Et sur iPhone la saisie est impossible ! Vous avez dit tests de non-régression ?

### 1/5 — What happened to landscape mode? Thumbs down!

*2013-02-04, version 1.5.3*

I also have the German & Spanish dictionaries from Ultralingua, and can't believe that with this update, the landscape mode is gone from all three. Frankly I'd much rather do without the latest 'improvements' but at least be able to use this on my iPad.

The worst part about it is that even in portrait mode, when you try to enter any text for search, the keyboard that pops up is in… landscape mode, which blocks the field where you're supposed to enter the text. Thus rendering this app TOTALLY useless.

Please fix this PRONTO!

### 1/5 — Freeze with iOS 6.1

*2013-02-03*

Same here, the app freezes when trying to look up a word. Useless like this. Hope they fix soon.

### 1/5 — Please fix

*2013-02-02*

Since the update, all my Ultralingua dictionaries freeze when I try to search for a word. This is rendered all of them very useless.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Très rapide même offline

*2025-12-23*

Très bonne application assez réactive et qui a la bonne idée de fonctionner même en mode avion.

### 5/5 — Awesome app!!! Over 10 years of using Ultralingua!!!

*2025-09-04*

It’s not perfect but I’ve been using the Ultralingua app for over a decade and it’s been VERY reliable. I use this app almost every single day! The phone version could use some updating for a smoother experience because it takes a moment to learn how to navigate the app effectively/efficiently for optimum usage. I still however consider it one of the best tools in my arsenal for language reference and learning. And it’s still one of THE BEST dictionary apps I’ve ever come across. The bottom line is that although it’s a bit pricey, could use an update & requires somewhat of a learning curve, it’s definitely DEFINITELY worth investing in!!!

### 5/5 — Awesome Dictionaries

*2024-12-14*

My favorite dictionary - easy to use; succinct definitions. This is my go-to dictionary for the past 10 years when in need of a translation or definition (e.g., French with the word definition in French). I regularly use the following UltraLingua dictionaries: French-English; French-French; French-Italian; Italian-English; and German-English. High recommendation for UlraLingua Dictionaries.

### 5/5 — Very good

*2020-11-12, version 2.9*

Not perfect but I’ve Been using this app for years and it’s been reliable. The phone version could definitely use some updating for a smother experience because it takes a moment to learn how to navigate the app effectively because there are minor glitches that they still have not fixed on the phone version of the app. It is however worth investing in !!!

### 5/5 — Très bonne application

*2020-10-29*

Usage pluri quotidien

### 5/5 — Excellent !

*2018-01-31*

### 5/5 — Best language dictionaries!

*2017-09-13*

Comprehensive and easily searchable!

### 5/5 — Formidable

*2017-06-09*

Cette application est toujours prête être utilisée, il manque
Un peu de synonymes dans les descriptions mais elle rend un énorme service.

### 5/5 — Excellent!!

*2017-05-06*

I have used this app for a long time both on my iPhone and iPad. I find it particularly invaluable when reading a novel in French to refer to it every time I come across a new word. It is the best method for making advanced and rapid progress in a foreign language.
