### 3/5 — Time for an overhaul

*2024-12-28, version 2.11.1*

Been using this app for years, but it has no proper night mode and gets confused when switching between light and dark, with entries becoming illegible. Give this app the update it deserves.

### 4/5 — Speak function

*2024-08-29*

Thank you very much !!
Now it's working.

### 3/5 — pronunciation sound

*2024-07-10*

This is really good application, but when I want to check pronunciation, I click on ‘speak ‘ then app is shut down…

**Developer response:** Hello, we've fixed the "Speak" bug in version 2.11.1. Please update your app to the latest version. Email us at escalate@ultralingua.com with any questions. Thank you for using Ultralingua!

### 4/5 — Good but needs multi-dictionary search

*2023-12-03, version 2.10*

This review is for both the app and two of the dictionaries (Apple won’t let me review the standalone dictionaries Ultralingua sells). The Ultralingua app itself is mostly great, in that you can have just one app for multiple dictionaries. However, unfortunately you can only search one dictionary at a time. If I’m looking for, say, an EN-ES translation of a word, I want to be able to search all my EN-ES dictionaries, not just one. It seems a single-app approach should allow this.

As for content, well, I’ve learned that more words in a dictionary isn’t necessarily better. For my EN-ES example, the main one with 75k words isn’t better/worse than the Collins 55k one. The 75k one has more technical words (e.g., isotherm). But when I asked my Mexican wife to throw a test word at me (jamaica), the Collins dictionary had it (hibiscus), whereas the bigger 75k one didn’t. This is exactly why it would be great if you could search words across multiple installed dictionaries, or at least switch easily between different dictionaries for the same search term.

### 2/5 — Fantastic but outdated

*2023-01-04, version 2.9*

One of my favorite dictionaries, but the app hasn’t been updated.

### 2/5 — It used to be good

*2022-09-05*

It used to be a good app but it hasn’t been updated in a long, long time. I find that it often doesn’t have the words I’m looking for although google translate does. It’s a shame as I like a lot of things about this app, for instance it gives you the gender of the word, but it’s become practically unusable.

### 4/5 — A constant companion

*2022-07-21, version 2.9*

So, I haven't written many reviews on iOS apps, but feel this one is deserving of it. As I study and teach languages I've found this application to be my constant companion. I love that it can be used on both iPhone, iPod and iPad with the same license and wish there was more integration with the MacOS version. Please bring the MacOS flash card feature to the iOS version and sync the two would be all I can imagine as possible improvements. I feel this is the dictionary standard on which all will be compared and judged. Keep up the great work. I also want to mention the Bookshelf app that unites their various dictionaries is brilliant and something that others can only dream of.

### 4/5 — Indispensable

*2022-06-11*

Simplement indispensable.
Mais une mise à jour serait la bienvenue!
La dernière remonte à deux ans en arrière…
Une option qui permettrait d’ajouter des mots, du jargon technique par exemple serait utile.

### 3/5 — please update

*2021-12-09, version 2.9*

It just crashes on my mac please fix the bug

### 3/5 — Purchased the Collins Italian-English dictionary

*2021-02-13, version 2.9*

I’m a beginner Italian student and purchased the Collins Italian-English dictionary offered through this app because it seemed more informative than just using a translation app. I really like the full list of conjugations, etc. However, I’m surprised that in just a few paragraphs of simple reading there have already been a few words that I wasn’t able to find in this dictionary at all and a few more which I figured out the infinitive of but still did not find in the list of conjugations. Furthermore, the translation app does recognize and translate all of these words accurately so I’m further confused as to why they don’t appear in the dictionary...

### 4/5 — Great!

*2020-12-08, version 2.9*

It’s very helpful. I find all words, and I love the verbs very detailed!

### 3/5 — Peut mieux faire

*2020-04-21*

Pratique mais avec un peu de pratique des mots sont absents trop souvent pendant mes recherches.

Dommage pour un tarif qui me paraît de ce fait trop élevé.

### 3/5 — Love the app, don’t love keeping two

*2019-06-17, version 2.8*

I originally installed the bookshelf from a recommendation from a single language Ultralingua dictionary with the promise that I could use it and dictionaries for other languages in one app. The problem is that the bookshelf has never pulled in the purchase of the single language dictionary as promised. The developers used to send one off codes so I could pull in the single language dictionary every time a change was made to the bookshelf and I lost access to that language, but a few years ago they stopped responding. Now I have the bookshelf app with five dictionaries and a single language app installed. Its less useful to me to have to search the single language app separately, and it bugs me to have to keep two apps installed. The problem has also dissuaded me from purchasing other dictionaries in the bookshelf app. I would have thought they’d have fixed this bug by now, but apparently this “feature”, which is still advertised within both apps, is not seriously supported.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Very confusing as it says Try It for everything

*2026-01-03, version 2.11.1*

NO LONGER WORKS AT ALL. Opens and closes leaving behind a blue screen. Tap on the blue screen and it disappears. Ultralingua does NOTHING to fix this. They keep saying to remove it and put it back in which solves NOTHING! This is how I lost my English dictionary too and it disappeared from the Apple library.

### 1/5 — Crashes on Launch

*2025-07-31, version 2.11.1*

Doesn’t seem to work on iOS 18.6 (15 Pro Max).

### 1/5 — lacks advertised functionality

*2024-09-26, version 2.11.1*

there is currently no icloud sync. both the bookshelf and individual collins dictionaries by the same developer advertise syncing favorites and transferring them to other devices but this function is broken which, for an app with this price tag, is unacceptable. the developer responded to an email inquiry letting me know that they are aware and have no timeline as to when a fix can be expected. i have many favorites in an individual dictionary app and after buying another one of their expensive dictionaries i am unable to use them both in the bookshelf app because there is no way of transferring all the favorites. the favorites also don’t sync between the iphone and ipad versions of the dictionary or bookshelf apps. the developer either needs to provide a fix, which honestly is not that serious of a coding job, or update the store description before people spend $18 for each of their dictionaries expecting the advertised features.

### 1/5 — Does Not Support Family Sharing

*2022-12-27, version 2.9*

It says it does, but it does not!

### 1/5 — Version français-portugais indigente

*2022-07-26*

La version français-portugais n’est qu’une liste de mots assez succincte, sans aucun exemple, où l’on se rend vite compte que beaucoup de vocabulaire de base est absent.

Je ne suis vraiment pas un grand lusophone, mais chaque fois qu’un mot m’a manqué je ne l’ai pas trouvé (mais il était bien présent chez Porto Editora).

À presque 15 euros c’est vraiment TRÈS cher… Peut on espérer des mises à niveau ???

### 1/5 — Needs an update

*2022-06-25, version 2.9*

This app hasn’t been updated in two years and it shows. Every time I try to download language library updates it crashes. It seems Ultralingua doesn’t want to comply with Apple’s privacy transparency requirements because there is no other logical explanation for why they are not updating. DO NOT BUY THIS APP until they update.

### 1/5 — Not user friendly

*2020-02-14, version 2.9*

It feels like I've wasted my money because this is so difficult to navigate around I tend to not use it.
Would love to be able to enter a word and it goes to that word or the verb, but instead you have to work out which screen you need to be on, then which language you need to select before retyping the word after trying on the 'wrong' search bar!! Very frustrating.

### 1/5 — no longer works

*2019-08-09, version 2.8*

This app no longer works on an up-to-date iPadPro.

### 1/5 — NO customer support

*2016-12-13, version 2.7*

I'm having trouble opening the Bookshelf app, crashes every time I open it. I've asked Ultralingua twice to help, no response either time. I can't use any of the dictionaries at all. Prior to this problem, I really liked and used the app a lot. Be aware that their customer service is no support whatsoever. :(
I have a new iPad Pro on iOS 10.

### 1/5 — Poor integration

*2016-10-28, version 2.7*

Bought the French and Italian dictionaries prior to his one but none of my favorites came across so useless, had to delete this one. Don't bother

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — This is the one

*2025-06-14, version 2.11.1*

If you’re looking for a bilingual dictionary app, stop your search and buy this one. I bought this app over 15 years ago and I still use it nearly every day, to this day. 6 stars, no doubt.

### 5/5 — Vale oro

*2025-05-05, version 2.11.1*

Cuesta lo que cueste, este app vale oro. Me ha servido como cualquier bueno amigo que tengo en las estanterías… en el bolsillo.

### 5/5 — Pretty Good

*2023-05-26*

Has fuzzy searching when you can’t spell. Searches backwards so works even if you haven’t switched the from
And to languages around. Shows declinations succinctly.

I’m using the Collins German-English dictionary.

### 5/5 — Best for learning a language

*2022-10-22, version 2.9*

Access to all definitions of a word and all conjugations of verbs. Easy to use.

### 5/5 — Important and a must have

*2021-10-03, version 2.9*

This is very important to have to learn study 📚 more words I bought this so I can learn and expand my vocabulary in Italian 🇮🇹 language since I’m studying 📖 Italian 🇮🇹 in the Rosseta stone app and because you need to learn way more words like tou know you native language 💕 💗 💜💜💙💛💛💚 this app I bought the full version to unlock all the words in Italian

### 5/5 — Excelente

*2021-04-20, version 2.9*

Excelente

### 5/5 — Ultralingua Fantastic!

*2020-11-18, version 2.9*

An amazing application and once you start to really use it..one realizes how useful it can be to learn the language. It is my constant companion!!!

### 5/5 — Very handy

*2020-06-22, version 2.9*

This is really very handy. You can look up a word on your phone and TRUST it (unlike with Google translate or Wiltionary). You can flip quickly between languages and you can look up conjugations. I use it several times a day. Indispensable.

### 5/5 — Best language app I’ve found

*2020-05-27, version 2.9*

I’ve used this for years, and I have zero complaints. Easy to use, no internet needed, rapid and efficient customer support—which I’ve needed just once in all this time. But I would kill for a Danish-English. Any chance of that?? Puh-leeze!

### 5/5 — The best dictionary app

*2018-12-06*

I’ve been using this app since I traveled to Florence to learn Italian 7 years ago in 2011. I was 18 back then and I still use it today when I read Italian books. There aren’t many apps that you keep on your phone for that long but this one is just perfect. Thank you !
