I had high hopes for this app. I’ve seen many great university apps, as well as many awful ones. Unfortunately, this is not one of the good ones. This app serves no function that the myUMBC website can’t do by itself. The navigation is less intuitive, and the pages often load slower than they do in Safari. I’d really love to see a legitimate mobile app, and I think it could have a lot of potential. It needs a full redesign and rebuild from the ground up using a native app platform, rather than a website in a mobile wrapper. Two stars because it “works” (even though it’s useless). During the last few times that I've tried to use it, including uninstall/reinstall, I have been unsuccessful. It will either show a black screen or the white UMBC screen and then crash. The purpose of a mobile application is to communicate information to the user immediately, my experience was the opposite. The home tab navigated me to UMBC's normal home page, I could of just used my phone browser instead...no advantage. ### 1/5 — Useless *2010-09-08, version 0* Useless! It does not do anything ### 3/5 — Good for those familiar with the University *2010-05-24, version 0* Go UMBC! Overall, I like the app and it's a good first stab at a mobile app for the school. Just a few little things, like no overview map (you have to know what you are looking for) and athletics is lumped in with the arts in the map directory. The Athletics tab is just news, not schedules, team info or events. Events is just a tiny portion of what's on the university calendar. How are items sorted in the News section? It isn't chronologically, which would seem to be most logical. Needs a browse function in the directory. And I didn't realize that there was a second page of home page icons until I swiped the page by accident. There is no indication on the home page that there is a second page (the lone dot at the bottom isn't accompanied by a second to indicate another page, which is the usual convention). And what different information or functionality do the different 'roles' provide, just news - what about events or other content? What about roles for alumni, parents or visitors? What about links to departments, admissions, library or financial aid? Can I check my account balance or classes? Do I need to also download the TransLoc app to get the real time transit info? All I see are routes and stops. LIke I said. Mostly little stuff. I'm sure this app will get better with use and new version upgrades. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — cannot use *2023-06-22* this app is not usable, when trying to log in with gmail i get this error: You can’t sign in from this screen because this app doesn’t comply with Google’s secure browsers policy ### 1/5 — Can’t login *2022-03-16, version 2.2.11* This app is useless. I can never login. I’ve tried reinstalling it a couple of times. It just doesn’t want me to login. ### 1/5 — Just use the website. *2019-08-31, version 2.2.10* The app is just the website but worse. It's buggy, you can't access email OR blackboard through it, and it crashes half of the time. It would be really useful if I could easily check basic things like my campus card or profile information, some aspects of myumbc definitely doesn't translate well to mobile, but it's better to have good but limited functionality than a buggy mess that has no reason existing. Just use the website. ### 1/5 — App is unusable, goes to black screen like a flickering lightbulb *2019-02-24, version 2.2.7* I set up fingerprint recognition in the app when prompted, and now when I try to use it it just cycles between a black screen and the fingerprint input. It won’t let me get in or do anything. The fingerprint authentication pops up immediately but then you just get a message saying “Logging in...” BUT IT NEVER DOES. I personally use it and love it. However since my system update to ios9, I have continuous issues with this app. More recently it hangs and crashes immediately upon opening the application. I have been using other apps to preform these tasks or logging into my umbc through my safari. I believe that this somewhat ruins the app because it is supposed to allow easy access to my umbc on the go.
