## What is Undercast Weather Aether?

UndercastWeather Aether delivers National Weather Service forecasts alongside on-device, model-enhanced predictions you can compare side by side.

The idea is simple: you should be able to see the official forecast AND a smarter interpretation of it — without giving up your privacy.

WHAT MAKES UNDERCAST DIFFERENT
• Dual-mode forecasts — switch between raw NWS data and Aether-enhanced predictions with a tap
• On-device learning — Aether refines its forecasts using local signals; nothing leaves your device
• Severe weather Live Activities — Tornado, Thunderstorm, Flood, and other warnings appear on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island the moment they're issued, with hazard-specific icons
• Astronomical data — sunrise, sunset, moon phase, and twilight times sourced from the U.S. Naval Observatory
• Searchable — find any U.S. location by ZIP code, city, or state, no location sharing required

BUILT FOR APPLE PLATFORMS
Native experiences on Mac, iPhone, and iPad — with a Home Screen widget for at-a-glance conditions.

ONGOING UPDATES
UndercastWeather regularly updates Aether to improve accuracy, performance, and features.

PRIVACY FIRST
Aether's learning happens on device. Your trained data never leaves your devices — with optional iCloud sync, it moves only between your Apple devices through your private iCloud account. You don't need to share your location to use the app, and we don't collect telemetry on your forecast usage.

Our apps do not use third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, tracking SDKs, data brokers, or third-party service connections. We encourage every user to turn on Apple’s App Privacy Report to see this for themselves.
To enable App Privacy Report on iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report > Turn On App Privacy Report. After you use the app for a while, iOS will show the network domains contacted by the app.
For our apps, expected network activity should be limited to Apple-operated services needed for normal App Store, iCloud, device, or system functionality. In our weather app, you may also see direct connections to official weather or environmental data sources, such as NOAA, EPA, or similar public data originators used to provide the requested forecast, alert, air-quality, or environmental information.

We believe privacy claims should be inspectable, not merely promised.

NOTE
Only locations within the United States are supported, as Aether is trained (on device) on data sourced by you from the National Weather Service.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.7.1 — 2026-08-19

• Data integrity. Location-switch data bleed fixed.

Switching cities quickly could show the new city with the old city's weather, alerts, and timezone — a cancelled fetch silently finished and overwrote the screen. Every fetch now re-checks that it still speaks for the screen before writing.

Aether no longer zeroes hourly UV. Whenever Aether corrections were on, every hourly UV value silently became 0 (which also fed the hero display).

Background refresh stops destroying the AQ hoard. The 25–55 min background pass was wiping each location's cached air quality, UV, AQ forecast, and ZIP — forcing re-polls and re-geocodes and defeating the hoarding design. It now carries them forward.

• Timezones (all fixed for remote locations)
Arc time markers ("now / 4p / 8p") were in device time while everything else showed location time — phone and watch.

Day-detail header could show the wrong weekday across the dateline.

EPA UV hours parsed in device time, shifting the whole UV curve; fixed on phone and watch (the watch now resolves and caches each location's timezone, and uses it for solar noon too).

CloudKit learning-record merge compared days in UTC while records were created in local time — two devices on opposite sides of UTC duplicated outcomes. Merge now agrees with the local calendar day.

• Alerts & watch

The 2-minute home alert poll now actually fires notifications and Live Activities — previously a tornado warning it caught waited up to 15 minutes for the next full refresh.

Watch location service no longer leaks/hangs on concurrent requests, and waits for the permission prompt's answer before requesting a fix (first-launch failure fixed).

• Visual

Duplicate weekday label ("FRI … FRI") removed from extended-day rows.

Map temperature legend labels now sit at their true positions — "32" is under the freezing color.

The 24-Hour Clock setting now applies everywhere: sparkline axis, UV bars, arc markers, day-detail axis, astronomical times (previously only the hourly strip).

Watch UV tile no longer shows yesterday's peak as "current" at night.

### 1.7 — 2026-07-18

• Improved map overlay availability, including air quality, precipitation, and wind.
• Expanded Apple Watch support without the need for an iPhone.

### 1.5 — 2026-07-11

• The application of the Aether model has been improved.
• Improved precipitation prediction.
• Other bug fixes.

### 1.3 — 2026-07-06

• More reliable severe weather alerts — no duplicate notifications, plus quick access to re-enable them if they were blocked
• Enhanced efficiency and bug fixes

### 1.251 — 2026-06-13

Severe weather, on time.
- Tornado and severe weather alerts now deliver more reliably the moment NWS
issues them — even if the app was closed when the warning was raised.
- New "Notifications Blocked" prompt with a one-tap shortcut to System
Settings if iOS permissions were ever turned off.
- Minimum-severity preference (All / Watch+ / Warning) now takes effect
immediately instead of waiting for the next app launch.
