## What is Underfiction?

She opens the letter. The room is quiet. You decide what happens next.

Underfiction is interactive storytelling in literary prose. Step into an authored opening or begin with a sentence of your own. Direct the scene from inside it or outside it; the engine follows.

— START WITH A STORY, NOT SETUP —

Enter Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Dracula, Persuasion, or Sherlock Holmes at a moment already in motion. Or choose one of four original worlds: a Regency house party, a summer estate, a fantasy tavern, or a deep-space freighter.

Authored openings take you straight to the first meaningful choice. Prefer a blank page? Create any setting, cast, and tone you want.

— YOU’RE THE DIRECTOR —

Write what your character says or does:
• “She opens the letter.”

Speak as anyone in the cast:
• “Have the captain lie about the fuel.”

Or direct the narrator:
• “Slow down. Let the silence do the work.”

Choose first or second person, present tense, or inner thoughts. Add a standing direction — “keep her unreliable” or “no dialogue tags” — and every turn in that story follows it.

— PROSE, NOT CHAT —

Every response is written as fiction: scene-setting, interior monologue, tension, rhythm, and subtext. Choose among leading language models and switch mid-scene when you want a different voice.

— STORIES THAT REMEMBER —

Scenes work like chapters. When one ends, its essential events carry into the next. Long scenes compress older passages automatically, so the story can continue without losing the thread. Summaries and compression are free; you pay only for generated prose.

— SEE IT. HEAR IT. —

Attach a face, room, or photograph and let the narrator write from what it sees. Generate character portraits and scene art, animate an image, set a backdrop, or have any passage read aloud in the voice you choose.

— YOUR LIBRARY, EVERYWHERE —

Stories, characters, and worlds follow you to every device you sign in on. Stories are encrypted at rest on our servers, and we don't read them. One switch turns sync off — then your library lives on that device alone. Either way, export a readable story at any turn, carry a complete story with its cast and media, or move your entire library between your devices in one portable Underfiction file.

Underfiction also imports Tavern character cards and world books, so you are never locked into one library.

— CREDITS, NOT SUBSCRIPTIONS —

Start free. When you want more, buy credits for the words and media you generate. Credits do not expire. No recurring plan, no ads, no selling your writing.

Open a story. Take the pen.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 0.15.4 — 2026-09-01

- GLM 5.2 and Grok 4.6 join the recommended models: the cheapest turn, and the fewest refusals.
- MiniMax H3 Max animates clips with sound for a third of the credits.

### 0.15.2 — 2026-08-16

- The field you write in floats over the prose, with room for a paragraph.
- An illustration prompt arrives in about a second, written as it goes.
- Pick a still to animate from a shelf: scene, cast, world, your photos.
- Type one line above a character or world description, generate the rest.
- One kind of direction per story: write it, name it, use it anywhere.
- Grok 4.6 and Gemini 3.7 Flash take their slots; illustrations get Grok Imagine 2.

### 0.15.1 — 2026-08-13

- Story or Roleplay: choose the shape at setup. Roleplay opens on one character, in their voice, and waits for your reply.
- Every narration control now names its subject. First person is your protagonist saying "I", not the character — and a first-person narrator keeps the interiority they exist for.
- Write a direction once and use it in any story. Saved directions belong to your library, sync like a character or a world, and up to three can steer a single story.
- Your library follows you to every device you sign in on, encrypted at rest. One switch in Settings turns sync off — then it lives on that device alone.
- Sign in on a device holding a library that isn't claimed yet and Underfiction asks first: add it to this account, or clear it.
- Name your protagonist before the engine writes the opening, so the first turn addresses you correctly.
- Grok 4.5 is back in the model picker. Kimi K3 leaves it; turns already written on it keep their name in the log.
- Every large overlay has a visible way out, and the world screen reads in one column.
- Plus a pass across all three platforms: consistent buttons, steadier story thumbnails, and the usual polish.

### 0.15.0 — 2026-08-06

- Five literary classics join the library: Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Dracula, Persuasion, and Sherlock Holmes — canon leads, cover art, and authored openings in every supported language.
- The Library opens on a moving showcase of worlds, leads, and openings, rebuilt for the phone with one clear way back out of every detail view.
- Browse the built-in openings without leaving the Library — the starter browser is native now.
- Choose the narration voice, or write a standing direction in your own words that every turn follows.
- Attach an image and the narrator writes from what it sees — a face, a room, a photograph you want in the scene.
- Any passage can be read aloud in the model and voice you choose, cached on your device so replaying is free.
- Opus 5 and Gemini 3.6 Flash join the model picker, with recommended models first and rates shown per turn.
- The prose follows the language you write in, independent of the interface language.
- Your library stays on your device. Export one story, or all of it, as a portable .underfiction file.
- Plus a design pass across platforms, clearer import errors, and the usual round of polish.

### 0.14.2 — 2026-07-30

- Small refinements, plus the usual round of bug fixes and polish.
