## What is Understudy?

Understudy is an educational investing simulator. It uses practice money only — no real accounts, no real trades, and nothing in it is investment advice.

Most people learn investing the expensive way: with real money, on a real day, with no idea what a limit order or settled cash actually means until it costs them. Understudy lets you rehearse first.

There's no phone number to give and no brokerage account to open. Understudy starts on its own with an anonymous session, and nobody on the other end is trying to move you into real trades.

HOW IT WORKS
• Open a practice brokerage account funded with simulated cash.
• Browse real fund names and fictional stocks at simulated prices.
• Place real-style orders — market, limit, stop, stop-limit — and watch them fill, partially fill, or get rejected, with a plain-English explanation of why.
• Advance time a day, a week, or a month. Cash settles, dividends land, markets drop — and when something needs you, the clock stops and tells you what it means for you.
• Learn each concept the moment you meet it: bid and ask, buying power, settlement, slippage, cost basis, holding periods, wash sales.

THE INTERFACE GROWS WITH YOU
Your first order ticket asks three things: buy or sell, how much, and what kind of order. As you learn, timing and the fine print appear — until you're reading the same seven-field ticket a real brokerage shows.

YOUR NUMBERS, YOUR SIMULATION
Enter your own income, savings, and expenses (self-reported) so every scenario runs against figures that mean something to you. Nothing is verified, and no real account is ever connected. Your figures and progress are kept with your Understudy account so they survive a reinstall. Sign in with Apple or Google to take them to another device, and delete them any time in Settings.

WHAT'S FREE

• Historical replays — practice through 2008 and 2020
• Stop and stop-limit orders

Premium is available as a weekly or annual subscription (the annual plan includes a 7-day free trial) or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period and are managed in your Apple Account settings.

Every price in Understudy is simulated. Bond funds follow the shape of published Treasury yield history; everything else is generated from calibrated statistics or is fictional. Past or simulated performance never predicts real results. Understudy is not a broker, adviser, or bank, and it can never place a real trade.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6.0 — 2026-10-02

Understudy now keeps track of what you've practiced, and asks for your call before it explains.

PRACTICE THAT FADES, AND COMES BACK
• A concept you've proven fades if you haven't used it in a while. Its ring segment turns to Revisit, and one quick question brings it back.
• Concept sheets change with what you know: a worked example in numbers first, then the same ticket with the last step blank, then just the rule.
• Each cluster in the Concept Library has a guidebook: what ties its concepts together, and one situation worked several ways.

YOUR CALL, FIRST
• Before you place an order, you can say how sure you are. The outcome screen leads with your call, what happened, and the one line that explains the difference.
• Your first market order asks what you'll pay a share before anything else, and shows you once it fills.

TODAY'S DECISION, PICKED FOR YOU
• Today's two topics now come from what's slipping: never two of the same kind, and never yesterday's kind. Once you've proven a concept, it comes back as a harder version.

A PLAN FOR TOMORROW
• Session Complete leads with what you did, then ends with one sentence you finish: "Tomorrow, after my coffee, I'll start the Volatile market." The daily reminder, if you turn it on, follows that moment and names what's open.

NEW HERE?
• Three quick questions come before your numbers. There's no score, and each answer gets a one-line explanation.

Everything in Understudy is still practice money, and nothing in it is investment advice.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-10-02

Understudy opens on a stage now, and it may ask you once how it's going.

A STAGE TO OPEN ON
• Instead of a blank screen, the app opens on Cue's stage under a spotlight, then your first screen.

ONE QUESTION, ONCE
• When you finish a session that ended at or above what you put in, the app may ask for an App Store rating. It never asks after a session that ended below, and never more than once a version. You can always rate from Settings.

Everything in Understudy is still practice money, and nothing in it is investment advice.

### 1.4.1 — 2026-10-01

Finishing your first session takes far fewer taps.

FEWER STOPS
• A holding's first dividend still stops the clock and asks what to do with it. Later ones land quietly as cash, the summary says what they paid, and you can reinvest any time from the ticket.
• A stock split in something you don't hold no longer stops the clock.
• Quiet dividends aren't decisions waiting, so they no longer count toward the amber line on Your Activity or the app icon's badge.

THE CLOCK REMEMBERS YOUR STEP
• Choose a day, a week or a month from the time control's menu once, and the button keeps advancing by that step, in every session.

KNOW WHAT YOU'RE STARTING
• Each scenario card says how long its session runs.
• Until your first session finishes, its Continue card says your recap and Today's decision open at the end.

A ten-year first session at a month a tap now takes about 120 taps instead of about 350.

Everything in Understudy is still practice money, and nothing in it is investment advice.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-09-30

A better ending to every session, a card worth sharing, and one small decision a day.

SESSION COMPLETE, REBUILT
• Each finished session gets a name for how you rehearsed, like "Patient buyer", with the evidence under it.
• See what changed from your first order to your last, including the slippage each one paid.
• The concepts you proved this session light up on your Repertoire ring.
• One next rehearsal, ready to start in a tap.

YOU VS. BUY-AND-HOLD
• Session Complete and the Outcome chart show where a broad-market fund, bought on day one and held in the same simulated market, would have ended. A dashed line, never a score.

SHARE YOUR RECAP
• A card with your style and what you proved. No balances, no returns, and every price marked simulated.

TODAY'S DECISION
• After your first session, Your Activity offers one small call a day in your own numbers. It takes about a minute and never changes your session.
• An optional daily reminder, and the only thing that badges the app icon.

DECISIONS WAITING
• Your Activity now says when an order is still working or an event is waiting for you. Your session stays exactly where you left it.

Everything in Understudy is still practice money, and nothing in it is investment advice.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-29

A ring for what you've proven, and a clock that shows its work.

YOUR REPERTOIRE RING
• Stocks' concepts now form a ring, grouped into five topics. It fills when you show you know a concept in a session, or tap "I've got this". Reading alone doesn't count.
• It shows how many you've proven, or how many are left. Never a score.
• Tap it on Pick a Path or Your Activity to open the new concept library, where every concept opens its explanation.

MOVING THE CLOCK, IN ORDER
• When you advance, the date rolls forward, then settled cash appears, then how your holdings moved over that stretch, then any event that needs you.
• When a prediction you made proves a concept, the ring fills right there on the order's screen.

CUE REACTS
• Cue reacts to what the market does, never to your balance: calm at a dividend, surprised at earnings, curious at a split, thinking through a sector rotation, planted through a crash.
• A session that proves a concept ends with Cue's bow. Otherwise, a thumbs-up for the practice.

A GENTLER START
• After setup, your risk profile arrives in three beats, with your ten-year range drawn as a spread and where most first rehearsals start.

Everything in Understudy is still practice money, and nothing in it is investment advice.
