## What is Undertone?

Undertone is built for people already in therapy. It helps you hold onto what mattered, reflect between sessions, and come back to your next appointment with more continuity.
Capture or upload a session, get a clean summary, save what you want to remember, and prepare for what to bring up next time.

 • Review what came up without digging through scattered notes

A CALMER WAY TO STAY CONNECTED TO THERAPY
Therapy can move quickly. Important insights, patterns, and next steps are easy to forget once the session ends. Undertone gives you a private space to return to the parts of therapy that matter most, so the work does not disappear between appointments.

Undertone is not a therapist, crisis service, or diagnostic tool. It does not provide medical advice or replace professional care. It helps you organize, revisit, and reflect on the care you already receive. Undertone is built using HIPAA-aligned workflows.

### 4/5 — Cool concept

*2026-07-20*

I really liked that it aligned to HIPPA. That it stated it was not using sessions to train their software. I loved that it will audio record the sessions instead of expecting the user to type out a summary.

### 5/5 — Actually surprised

*2026-07-16*

I was honestly skeptical when I downloaded at firsy, but I'm impressed with some of the insights it's given me after 5 sessions. Pretty cool information and tracking!

### 1/5 — UNETHICAL / ILLEGAL

*2026-07-09*

Oh my god, as a therapist I am here to say DO NOT RECORD YOUR SESSIONS WITHOUT PRIOR CONSENT! This is wildly unethical and would likely resort in termination as a client. Depending on where you live this can also be illegal. Please do not record your therapy sessions without consent, this would be such a betrayal of trust and violation of what should be a safe space…not to mention the violation to your own privacy! Can’t believe this exists, please stay away!!!

The privacy policy also states that this is not HIPAA compliant.

**Developer response:** Thanks for taking the time to write. A few clarifications:

1. Undertone is designed for clients and therapists to use together. Our app directs users to talk with their therapist before recording, and features an in-app guide on how to start the conversation - the best experiences on the platform come from users whose therapists are involved from day one.

2. On HIPAA - the law specifically governs providers and insurers. A private record you keep for yourself sits outside the law, per HHS's own guidance - the same way your journal does. Your record belongs to you alone, by design. Even so, we've intentionally built Undertone to meet HIPAA's technical safeguards, which is what the HIPAA-aligned standard in both the app and privacy policy refers to.

3. Mosaic builds tools for practicing clinicians, and Undertone runs on the same secure engine therapists across North America use for their own session documentation daily. We built undertone.co/for-therapists to answer exactly these questions - therapists are welcome there, and in our inbox at hello@undertone.co.

### 5/5 — Super helpful!

*2026-05-27*

I love this app. I love especially the fact that it’s finally something that puts me (therapy user!) first, rather than either my therapist, the clinic, or worse yet, the insurance company!! I feel like this is more than just a helpful app, at least in three ways: first, it’s helpful for me in terms of keeping track of my therapy and my therapist’s ideas and my own ideas, feelings and improvement. Second: it helps me actually “keep” my therapy in a way that I usually wish I could. I mean I go to the session and then I come out, and I’m sure I take a lot with me, but there’s always the feeling that ok there was a lot of cool things my therapist said or I myself felt in the session, but afterwards there’s no way I can remember all of that, so they get lost. I mean I know my therapists says they don’t get lost in reality, but that’s how it feels and I can’t help it. This app really helps me with that feeling. And then it also gives me another thing that the app itself doesn’t even say: it makes me feel like I have someone with me in the session, someone who is on my side, like a companion or support or friend, that hears and sees what I did, and gives me feedback so I feel sure that I wasn’t imagine what I was feeling or hearing. Anyway, just wanted to say I love what this app does, thanks for making it!!!
