### 4/5 — Good but not so good

*2025-03-08*

Honestly the app has been very helpful with catching my train and knowing where it is at but my only problem is the constant Update alerts i get when i open the app it gets very annoying to a point where it makes me want to use a different app

### 4/5 — Long load times

*2024-11-21, version 2.46.3*

Map sometimes selects the wrong station. Data takes long to load.

### 4/5 — Kept up to date

*2024-04-18, version 2.37.0*

Really nice simple app overlaying waiting times on top of frequently updated MTA subway map, with localisation.

Just wish there was a Manhattan bus map as well, maybe for a one time fee.

### 4/5 — Manhattan bus would be great

*2023-12-26*

Simple app taking the latest MTA map and adding information about next train for each stop. Easy to use, double tap to zoom, regularly updated. My only wish: adding Manhattan bus maps too. Subscription for paid features is very steep, but not really necessary.

### 5/5 — Better than anything ive used.

*2023-11-22, version 2.32.9*

I love this app, saw it on tiktok knew i had to download this app. Kinda think its a bad idea to pay for connecting trains, but Its alr because this is a good app. Maybe add busses to this to :)

### 5/5 — I couldn't love this app more!

*2023-11-21*

Life-long NYer here, and this app just gets me. It knows exactly what I need. The clean simple facts and not all that jazz. Easy to use, and accurate!

Do you have one for buses? I'll download it if you do :)

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for reviewing us!

Thanks for sharing your interest in buses and our design point-of-view. We’re figuring out how to fund new features.

### 5/5 — Notifications on service changes

*2023-04-30*

This app is already good enough but having service notifications would make it even better.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your suggestion!

We would love to hear more about what kind of service alerts notifications you’re looking for. Please email us.

### 5/5 — So Easy to Use!

*2023-04-04, version 2.31.0*

We at random downloaded this app as confused New York tourists. This app is all you will need to navigate anyway you are going.

### 5/5 — Very useful!

*2023-02-06, version 2.29.0*

Native New Yorker. This is The App I use to navigate the subways easily. I love its design because it uses the familiar subway map as the backdrop and I just have to tap the station I’m headed to.
Understandable and clean layout!

### 5/5 — Simply the best.

*2023-01-18, version 2.29.0*

It sometimes pains me that this app isn’t more widely used or appreciated. It’s so easy to use. I tell everyone coming to NYC not to bother with the others. Underway is it!

### 5/5 — THE Best

*2023-01-03, version 2.28.0*

Been using Underway for years and it’s never steered me wrong. I wish all the transit apps were this good!

### 5/5 — by far the best NYC subway app

*2023-01-02, version 2.28.0*

perfect. I use it every day.

### 5/5 — The best NYC transit app hands down

*2022-08-24*

Must have app for all New Yorkers. Seriously. It’s helped figure out how fast I need to hustle for the next train, plan my transfers efficiently within the station, and overall peace of mind in what is the most hectic public transportation system in the country. It’s crazy accurate and always reliable. I love being able to click and see the arrival times and have the map all in the same view. A++

**Developer response:** Thank you for the kind words! Loving that peace of mind for you 🥰

### 5/5 — Accurate

*2022-06-17, version 2.20.2*

Appreciate this app for its accuracy

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — New ad on ad-free version slows departure time loading

*2025-05-27, version 2.50.1*

There is a new ad placement on departure board bubble which delays loading times. I purchased the ad free version but now this ad has been added.

### 1/5 — Why lock some features behind a paywall?

*2024-11-09, version 2.46.0*

Why just why I’m trying to favorite, sort, view the path map and the rail. Honestly I prefer subway times that app actually has features that are not behind a paywall. 🫤

### 1/5 — 1 Star

*2022-04-06, version 2.17.1*

I just lost my chance to get work on time because of this app.

### 1/5 — $72 per year is crazy

*2019-11-18, version 2.7.8*

I write software. That’s a crazy amount to charge for features that rely on free public MTA data, that other apps give you for free.

### 1/5 — Hmmmmmmm

*2017-12-18, version 2.1.1*

Issue already - five minutes after download. The L train lists arrival times for uptown and downtown trains, but the L doesn’t go uptown/downtown - it goes East/West. Just saying. Red flag for a Native.

### 1/5 — App Doesn't Download So As To Be Operative

*2016-08-01, version 1.2.0*

Every time I download the Underway app to my iPhone 6 Plus the interactive subway map does not appear. I get a blank page. So the app is not functional. What's going wrong? My phone is working fine and running iOS v. 9.3.3.

### 2/5 — Can't Get 1 Train Schedule at South Ferry

*2017-08-30, version 1.9.4*

Seems to be a good app but as someone that commutes daily on the Staten Island Ferry and connecting to the 1 train at South Ferry, I can't pull up a 1 train schedule. It pulls up the R and W which technically is the Whitehall Station when I tap on South Ferry. The other stations seem to work.

### 3/5 — Bus Schedules Please

*2025-05-05, version 2.49.0*

The map oriented interface is better than the official MTA app. However, the Pro subscription will need to include Buses schedule to justify the fees. I use the bus and subway to get around the entire 5 boroughs and the bus and subway schedules are indispensable.

### 3/5 — generally good but…

*2024-10-28, version 2.45.0*

123 trains are routinely there : min before the app says, so you tend to miss it—this has been true for years.

Q train and 7 train often change timing on app just as you get there which is maddening. please fix

### 3/5 — Crashes on favorites

*2024-07-11, version 2.40.0*

Tapping the favorites button (heart) immediately crashes the app. • Underway version latest • iOS version latest production (not beta) • I have the monthly subscription

UPDATE: after viewing the subscriptions page... now it mostly *doesn't* crash??!

Well, alrighty then. :)

Everything else about the app is lovely.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Love this app dearly, would gladly pay one-time instead of monthly.

*2026-02-03*

Simple and reliable. This app is part of my daily life. I just wish the creator would have an option for a one-time fee as opposed to monthly tiers.

**Developer response:** I removed all the pay walls, and all features are unlocked. Now it's ads, or subscribe to remove ads. I hope this new price structure helps you subscribe

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2026-01-29*

I’ve been using this app for about 6 months now. It really helps to know when a connecting train is arriving. Before using this app, I would try to get a glimpse of the screens on the platform, but most times I couldn’t see it. This app alleviates that. It’s super simple to use and always accurate

### 5/5 — Best subway app

*2025-04-28, version 2.49.0*

Actually useful organization of information and train times unlike MTA app, thank you!!

### 5/5 — A movement

*2025-01-25, version 2.46.8*

You gotta get this underway my friend

### 5/5 — The Perfect Subway App

*2024-08-19*

Underway is marvelous. It is the navigation app that I use most consistently on the train, and for good reason. It has exactly the information I need and nothing more, and it executes it perfectly. I know how to read a map. I don’t need colorful directions and an inventive new route that combines ferries, buses, and a dollar van. I want to know when I need to leave my apartment and if it’s worth it to wait for an express train. Underway gets me the information I want and it does it without drama. It also has lots of very thoughtful touches. It works very well offline, and I like that I can send a train tracking link to people I’m meeting so that they can track me live. It’s like flight tracking but for the subway. For all its utility and minimalism, Underway also betrays the meticulousness of its creators. Changes to the subway map are added right away — the walking connection between Times Square and Bryant Park seemed to appear within hours after it opened. Everything works how I need it to, when I need it to. EDIT: The service changes are better than just about any other app now. [Previously: The only thing that might need some more nuanced adjustment is the service change interface, which shows absolutely everything affecting a train at once and can be a touch overwhelming. Other apps do service changes, though.] Nothing does what Underway does as well as Underway does it. I haven’t even written an app review in years. I just feel I have a duty to point out the rare thing in our world that is not a disgusting disappointment. This is among them. Bravo!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the kind words with incredible detail! It's nice that you really get what we're trying to do. We hear you that the service change interface is overwhelming, and we want to hear more please: support@underway.nyc or @underwaynyc on Twitter

### 5/5 — ITS PERFECT

*2024-08-17, version 2.41.0*

i never write reviews but this app changed my life living in nyc. I LOVE U UNDERWAY

### 5/5 — (Fixed) Family share not working

*2024-07-13*

UPDATE: family share not working was completely my fault for leaving the option on the default off. Thank you, Daniel, for your help… Apparently I had a moment!

App works wonderfully.

**Developer response:** Family sharing is now enabled for Pro. Could you kindly let me know if it's working?

Previous response about widgets: Hello CD999888, thanks so much for your subscription! Because Apple limits how often a widget refreshes, a widget can't show real-time info. Still, I'd love to learn more about how a widget could be helpful to you. Maybe there is something else we can do in the future.

### 5/5 — Edit: thank you

*2024-06-24*

Edit: thank you for enabling family sharing for Pro. My apologies for my snippy tone earlier; I was stuck in the subway on a delayed 4 train and was a bit exasperated. Sharing Pro with my family will make life a bit better.

Original review:
Please enable family sharing. I'm not going to pay for Pro for 3 kids and a spouse.

### 5/5 — Excellent timings

*2024-06-15*

This app is excellent, it’s so accurate with when trains are coming. I don’t know why google maps and transit have not been able to replicate this accuracy but their loss.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2024-02-20*

I basically never review apps, but this thing is exactly what I wanted. It is extremely simple and does what it needs to, without any fluff.

I like that it just uses a normal subway map as the layout, very easy to navigate.

It has been a godsend for timing trains and altering course mid trip.
