Worth it for Medium and Reddit alone, and works on a bunch of other sites. And an awesome icon! ### 5/5 — Revising my review upward *2017-10-30* A few weeks ago I had reviewed Unobstruct unfavorably - but I’m now much happier with it, and am revising my review upwards. This is for two reasons: (1) The developer provided feedback explaining why Unobstruct doesn’t work fully automatically: it’s an IOS restriction for which there’s no workaround. (2) I’ve now seen several situations where Unobstruct worked but the Kill Sticky bookmarklet (which I had praised in my earlier review) didn’t. So I’m now convinced that Unobstruct is providing good value. **Developer response:** The bookmarklet can't be performed automatically, unfortunately, due to how it is implemented and limitations of Apple's Content Blocker mechanism. Instead, Unobstruct is coded to block specific bars on specific sites that can be hidden "safely" (without breaking the navigation of the page) and hides those. That list is being expanded upon as new updates are released (for example, 1.1 added 70 websites) and requests for others are accepted from users. Also, Unobstruct adds an icon to the Safari share sheet, in the Actions row, that you can enable via the More item. This is implemented in a very similar way to the kill sticky bookmarklet, but you have to trigger it manually on whatever pages you want to use it on (but if you put it as one of the first 4 actions by dragging it in More, it is more convenient to trigger than a bookmarklet). Also, as of 1.1 this action removes sticky elements on some pages that the "kill sticky" bookmarklet misses. ### 5/5 — A Breath of Fresh Air! *2017-10-20* The Chicago Tribune was blocking an article with 2 giant static banners at the top and bottom (neither was advertising, just in-your-face “branding”). Reading through the tiny window in the middle was a constricting pain. When I remembered to activate Unobstruct it was like a breath of fresh air. Reading using the entire screen, what a concept! So glad I got this app! ### 5/5 — I love this *2017-10-16* Really tired of floating share buttons and other garbage that gets in the way of content. Thank you! **Developer response:** I'm glad the suggestion I gave was able to help. I'm going to leave it here as a response to this review in case anyone else might see it who is having the same problem: The switches for content blockers like Unobstruct will appear disabled if there are any website restrictions set. To enable content blocker control, go to Settings > General > Restrictions, enter your code, scroll to Websites, and make sure it's set to All Websites (or use Disable Restrictions). You should now be able to go back and turn on Unobstruct in Settings > Safari > Content Blockers, after which you can turn your restrictions back on and the blocker should continue to work (but will be dimmed with the switch on — the restriction of websites also restricts the user from changing which blockers are enabled). If this doesn't take care of it for you, please contact support so we can help figure out what's going on. ### 5/5 — Worth every penny. *2017-08-30, version 1.1* Works as advertised. I was getting sick and tired of these websites messing up the screen with their silly "share widgets" and notices begging you to install their app. Note that this isn't an ad blocker. It only removes annoyances as described. ### 5/5 — I don't always need a dickbar remover... *2017-08-29, version 1.1* ...but when I do, I prefer Unobstruct. Seriously, this is a one of a kind light weight "dickbar" (social share bar) remover that doesn't interfere with any other ads or code on the page. You can use it with other content blocker apps. I prefer Firefox focus (with Safari extension) for ads and privacy. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — This is one of the most useful apps i ever bought... and i no longer works *2021-04-04* Recently it has stopped showing at all in the Safari share menu on iOS, i assume due to Apple updates. But it didn’t do anything. Save your money and solve your issue elsewhere (not the first time Gruber's given an enthusiastic bum-steer on software). ### 2/5 — Could have been so much more useful *2021-11-28, version 1.2* It's 2021, and we still have annoying sticky elements on websites. That's where Unobstruct comes in. It does what it says it does – hides those annoyances. However, it does so only when I explicitly ask it to do. I already had Kill Sticky Headers by Alisdair McDiarmid set up as a bookmark, and I could get rid of those annoyances with two taps. And since Unobstruct is an extension, I was under the impression that it would automatically remove those annoyances, and for some reason (navigation on the page being one), if I need the website with the header, I could refresh the page. However, that is not the case – I need to open the share sheet and choose the Unobstruct from the share sheet to remove the sticky headers. That defeats the purpose of having an extension. That's why I am rating this app 2 stars. I would request that the developer update the app to remove the headers automatically or at least provide a toggle to enable this inside the app for users who want it. ### 2/5 — Does not *2018-08-13* Does not remove bars from top and bottom of mobile websites. ### 4/5 — One of the greats but seems abandoned *2019-10-19, version 1.2* No longer blocks all top of page toolbars on NYTimes.com, even after running the extension. It keeps things in check, but when I need it to go further, for reading longer articles on an SE or Mini phone or for obnoxious sites in general, it’s one of those fundamental tools that makes me sigh with delighted relief every time I reach for it. I’m not sure how much the static content blocker is helping with, but Unobstruct’s share action almost always removes the privacy popups. This makes reading the web so much nicer, especially on Medium.
