The Cold War as one system with two halves, taught from the archives that have since opened. Unredacted: Cold War is a four-year curriculum: 100 lessons from the wartime conferences of 1945 to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991. It teaches the confrontation as one system rather than as a story with a hero. Both capitals ran covert action, both armed clients who committed atrocities, both lied to their own publics about what their weapons could do, and both built machinery to keep the other from ending the world by accident. The app says so in both directions, and it does not manufacture symmetries that were not there: the Warsaw Pact invaded its own members, and no amount of even handedness makes that equivalent to anything NATO did to France. The coups are taught from the countries they happened to. Iran in 1953 is Mosaddegh and the oil nationalisation, not the Dulles brothers as American characters. Guatemala is Decree 900. Chile is Allende's programme and the Chilean military. Where the record is open the lesson cites it, and where it is still closed the lesson says so rather than filling the gap. Where historians disagree, on who began it, on whether the build up of the 1980s ended it, on how close Able Archer came, the lesson gives the competing readings and names who holds what. Where a familiar story is wrong it gets corrected, including when the correction is inconvenient: Khrushchev's line about burying you is a claim about historical succession, not a nuclear threat, and the mistranslation shaped American threat perception for a decade.
