## What is Unwritten?

What if your phone wouldn't unlock until you'd written something?
Reflect before you scroll.

Unwritten locks your phone at bedtime and keeps it locked until you've written your morning pages. No willpower required. No notification you can swipe away. Your apps stay blocked from the moment you go to bed until the moment you sit down and reflect the next morning.
The phone you can't put down at night becomes the phone you can't pick up in the morning, until you reflect first.

WHY LOCK IT OVERNIGHT
The Artist's Way calls them morning pages. Therapists call it expressive writing. The research calls it metacognition. Ten minutes of unfiltered reflection before your day starts has been linked to lower anxiety, better focus, clearer decisions, and a quieter inner monologue.
Knowing this isn't the hard part. Your phone is right there. On the nightstand. Under your pillow. You scroll until you fall asleep. You scroll the second you wake up. Willpower at 11pm and willpower at 6:47am are both myths.
Unwritten removes the willpower question. You set a bedtime. The phone locks. It unlocks when you've sat down and reflected on the page.

HOW IT WORKS
1. Set your bedtime. The phone locks itself at that time every night.
2. Set a morning word goal (default: 20 words).
3. Wake up to a still-locked phone. The writing screen is already open.
4. Reflect on whatever's in your head. No prompts, no rules, no judgment.
5. Hit your word count. The phone unlocks. Your day starts.

WHAT'S INSIDE
- Bedtime lock via Apple's Screen Time API. Real locking, not a notification.
- A distraction-free writing screen built for reflection, not formatting
- A calendar heatmap that visualizes your reflection streak
- Auto-save on every keystroke. You'll never lose a morning's writing.
- Adjustable word goals
- Flexible schedule. Pick the bedtime and lock window that fit your life.
- A journal archive you can scroll back through to reflect on past entries
- Streak tracking and gentle stats. Not a leaderboard, just a quiet record.
- Full offline mode. Your reflections never leave your phone unless you opt in.

WHAT'S NOT INSIDE
- No account. No sign-up. No email required.
- No ads. None. Not now, not later.
- No social feed. No likes. No followers.
- No AI writing for you. The whole point is that you reflect.
- No cloud sync by default. Your private reflections stay on your device.

UNWRITTEN+

Optional upgrade for people who want more from their reflection practice:

- AI reflection insights. Patterns across your entries, mood arcs, recurring themes. Processed privately. Your raw text is never shared.
- Custom themes and serif fonts for the writing screen
- Encrypted iCloud backup so your reflections survive a lost phone

The core lock-and-reflect experience is free forever.

WHO IT'S FOR
- Morning pages practitioners who keep falling off the wagon
- Journalers who want a structural reason to actually open the notebook
- People who scroll in bed and can't stop
- Anyone who has ever said "I'd reflect more if I just had the time." You have the time. Your phone has it.

PRIVACY
Unwritten was built so you can reflect honestly. Your entries live on your device. We don't read them, we can't read them, and we never will. No analytics on what you write. The Screen Time permission is used only to lock your apps from bedtime until your morning goal is met. Read the full privacy policy at getunwritten.app/privacy.
Reflect first. Scroll later.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2026-07-10*

I know this is a new app but it’s so buttoned up and clean. I’m really trying to force myself to get thoughts out of my head so this is incredibly helpful. I’ve set my required word count to 500 to start and so far so good. Appreciate this app!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6.0 — 2026-08-28

Your words are yours to take anywhere.

- Copy any paste entry straight to the clipboard
- Share an entry to Messages, Mail, or anywhere else
- Export your entire journal as a text file from Settings - perfect for backing up or sharing with someone you trust

Free for everyone. Your entries stay private - exports contain only your own words.

### 1.5.4 — 2026-07-24

This update introduces a beautifully redesigned welcome experience that helps new writers get started faster, plus refreshed subscription screens and a round of polish and stability fixes across the app.

### 1.5.3 — 2026-07-22

A fresh start - literally.

We rebuilt the first few minutes of Unwritten from the ground up. Instead of a setup checklist, you'll answer a couple of honest questions - like how much time your phone takes from your evenings - and see what that adds up to over a year. The math is real, and it might sting a little.

A promise, in your own words. The new journey ends with a single-sentence pledge before your first entry. Writing things down is kind of our whole thing.

Straight talk on pricing. No fake discounts, no countdown timers. The price is the price, and your first week is free.

Plus polish and stability improvements throughout - screens flow more smoothly and everything's steadier under the hood.

Morning pages before your apps unlock. That part hasn't changed.

### 1.5.2 — 2026-06-09

Some updates show up loud. This one works in the background.
Quieter analytics. Smoother permission prompts. Steadier signal between you and the app. Nothing you'll see - everything you'll feel. Keep writing.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-04-23

You've been showing up. Writing every day. Letting Unwritten hold you to it.

This update is our way of holding up our end. Smoother, sturdier, quieter - the kind of polish that earns your trust over time. Keep going. It may get fun and interesting.
