### 4/5 — Fun game, needs a better list of words

*2024-05-18, version 1.0.3*

Please expand the dictionary as the game rejects many perfectly fine English words. Like “FAINTED” ?!?

When it works, it’s an addictive game. Love it!

### 4/5 — Good game

*2022-09-08, version 1.0.3*

Simple, slick and addictive. Thank you.

### 4/5 — Terrific game

*2021-07-10, version 1.0.2*

I love this game. Great lexicon, neat interface which is sympathetic to my poor vision. But..I can't get Duel to work. I can't get the Send arrow to work.

### 4/5 — Some suggestions

*2020-11-11, version 1.0.2*

Great game that I enjoy but: 1. The dictionary is random with certain perfectly valid words refused; 2. Needs functionality to remove a placed letter by re-tapping it in the tray; would be great to have a shuffle letters function too.

### 4/5 — Fun but needs work

*2020-10-29, version 1.0.2*

A fun concept. The 2-minute timer makes it a good choice for periods where you’d like brief time-wasters.

However,

1. The letter trays do not appear to be random. (I'm convinced I see the same 7-letter “random” tile sequences repeat over time).
2. The lexicon really needs work. In particular sometimes the single version of a word is accepted but the plural is rejected as misspelled.

### 4/5 — Great Game - One Request

*2020-10-20, version 1.0.1*

This is a fun and well-thought-out game. However, instead of (or in addition to) the down arrow to remove letters from the box, you should be able to retap the letter you want to remove. This is more intuitive.

### 4/5 — S

*2020-10-16, version 1.0.1*

The app is pretty bare bones and should allow one to review the very fast-paced game. It would be nice to be able to review the letters and the words formed from them after the fact. It would also be nice to be able to replay a game both before and after reviewing. It would also be nice to be able to play without a clock. And it would be nice to be able to see one’s scores, not merely the top score. I hope to see these areas improved in future updates, but encourage you to get the game as it is—it’s addicting.

### 5/5 — Really fun

*2020-10-15, version 1.0.1*

This is a super addicting word game. I think it would be cool if the dev could add a post game screen that showed your highlights for that game. Highest scoring word, oddest word, etc...

### 5/5 — Quick ‘n fun.

*2020-10-14, version 1.0.1*

Fun game to challenge yourself in 2 minute rounds.

Functional. Clean UI without unnecessary garish.

### 5/5 — simple but deceptively addictive

*2020-10-12, version 1.0.1*

A very simple but addictive game. The only problem is that you’re occasionally presented with a selection of letters that contains no vowels. This may work for Welsh language speakers but for the rest of us the game is over.

Update: Not actually a problem. I had not noticed how to reset the letters.

### 5/5 — Awesome Quick Time Killer

*2020-10-09, version 1.0.1*

Love this game but agree that it should show highest scored game and Game Center integration. Play this for hours (while sitting and waiting). Nice work!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Compressed

*2022-01-25, version 1.0.2*

The app automatically compressed after upgrading apple system and wont fix…

### 1/5 — Completely inaccessible for voiceover

*2020-10-11, version 1.0.1*

I use my iPhone with voiceover since I am visually impaired. Well, the game is inaccessible to me. I would appreciate if developer would put effort into making it accessible.

### 2/5 — Ok game issues with ios15

*2021-10-19, version 1.0.2*

Needs updating.

### 2/5 — It’s ok. Not worth the $$.

*2020-11-08, version 1.0.2*

It would be a great free app. With interstitial ads. But paying $2 for this simple app was too much. My main complaints:

1. You can only play in horizontal mode
2. You can not play against strangers or a leaderboard or anything. You either have to invite your friends or just try and beat your high score (which should be displayed along with current score after every game)
3. When you put up letters that don’t make a word you have to hit the down arrow to clear them. The down arrow is placed in an inconvenient spot and if you hit it twice fast because you’re speeding, it trashes your letters. Slowly.

### 2/5 — 英単語を知っている前提

*2020-10-08, version 1.0*

英単語を覚えるアプリだと思って購入したのですが、もじぴったんのようにアルファベットを組み合わせて単語を作るアプリでした

英単語を覚えるモードが無いのでこの評価

### 3/5 — Beautiful, Tarnished by Dev oversight’s

*2022-04-03, version 1.0.2*

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL GAME! SIMPLISTIC, FUN

Sadly no options to:
• Increase character amount
• Increase Time
• Missing some words. Example: “Grok” is a word (game does not recognize it)
(These are not my reasons for 3 star ⭐️)

DEVELOPMENT OVERSIGHT: (My reason for 3 star instead of 5)

Unfortunately, I have no idea why the developer… ignored logic in their mind and DID NOT consider:

500 million iPads apple mentioned, sold world wide… your game WILL be played on an iPad.

Therefore, why not make sure the game shows up correctly on iPad screen?

I have a 12’9 inch iPad Pro, in landscape mode, launching this game, you press the 2x button for the game to blow up and cover the entire screen (fair enough)…

here’s where the developer did not do, their due diligence:

The game appears at the bottom left edge of the screen, dangerously close, to bleeding out the edge of the screen. (making it uncomfortable to play)

I do some some development myself, there is a iOS screen simulator which you can run in xcode, showing approximation of how game will appear on the various iOS screens.

Developer was obviously focused on iphone only.

Sadly, singular thinking like this, diminishes the perception of the passion, involved in this project.

Especially, in this current age, when the development tools are available for the dev, to assist them, and make sure, game is running at it’s best viewing angles, for all iOS device screens.

### 3/5 — Needs Portrait Mode

*2022-03-04, version 1.0.2*

Playing a word game with two hands is less appealing. It needs portrait mode. Otherwise it’s pretty fun.

### 3/5 — Disappointed

*2021-07-18, version 1.0.2*

My partner and got Up Spell so we could play each other but Duel mode needs some serious improvement. I don't want to be sent a link in a messaging app, requiring multiple clicks before we can play each game. If we're in the same space and/or on the same network, can't we connect via AirDrop or use Bluetooth? Also would like to see my partner's score on my side. Nice game but requires further development.

### 3/5 — Decent

*2020-11-19, version 1.0.2*

It’s fun, but the letter selection doesn’t seem well randomized.

Sharing doesn’t work. Just get a blank screen and have to quit the app.

### 3/5 — Not Quite My Tempo

*2020-10-20, version 1.0.1*

This game wasn't for me, but I think it executes on its intentions well. It's a very fluid and responsive game; sessions are quick, the animations are tight and it gives nice Taptic feedback. However, I got frustrated by the letters I'd get, often with only one vowel and lots of duplicate letters. I might just be very bad at this game but it left me feeling stuck during games and ultimately made the game seem more like a task than a fun game. It is good at what it is but just isn't quite for me.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Still great in 2025

*2025-01-28, version 1.0.3*

Been playing this since it came out. One of the original and best word games. Highly addictive.

### 5/5 — Still great

*2023-12-15*

Been playing this since it came out. One of the original and best word games. Highly addictive.

### 5/5 — Fun, fast-paced escape

*2023-05-25, version 1.0.3*

Perfect for a quick escape during the day. Simple, clean design and delightful music. Continues to be one of my favorite games that I come back to.

### 5/5 — Hard Workers

*2022-03-09, version 1.0.2*

I like this game *a lot*. Scratches the Wordle itch between new words. One complaint: sometimes I get no vowels. Is this a feature or a bug? I get that this can happen in Scrabble, for instance, but then you have a whole board to play on. The session I just finished I went with “DR” which counted as a word, then I got a vowel. If this is intended I gotta say it feels a little broken. But the game is great. Everyone who likes Wordle should check it out.

### 5/5 — Pure fun.

*2020-11-13, version 1.0.2*

This is a delightfully addictive game, with a simple, effective design.

### 5/5 — Love it

*2020-10-25, version 1.0.2*

Lots of fun. Superb implementation.

### 5/5 — Fun and simple game!

*2020-10-25, version 1.0.2*

Very addictive. A great game to play in free moments. Definitely some words missing, but the developer is open to adding more. Definitely recommend if you like word games.

### 5/5 — Almost perfect

*2020-10-22, version 1.0.1*

I love this game but it would be nice to have a replay game button and a way of competing with other players of the game without having to send a link.

### 5/5 — Super fun

*2020-10-21, version 1.0.1*

Easy to learn and great fun

### 5/5 — Swift Version?

*2020-10-18, version 1.0.1*

Up Spell is ducking fun. I’d give it another star if only it were written in Swift 😏 but alas... Good work, Ken 😉
