I keep toggling them off, and they keep coming back. It’s very difficult to enjoy the work when it keeps wiggling about. Usually they add flashy animation where the story doesn't need it. Upgrade Soul is a very good comic at its core, and the interactive parts of it work quite well at enriching the story: the panel move cinematically, the music follows your pace, the 3D effects make the world a bit more real. Managed to get up to chapter seven and have purchased chapter 8 but it'll download about half the chapter and crash. Not sure if this is an iOS 8 issue but it is a pain paying for something and not being able to use it. ### 5/5 — Sci-Fi at its best ! *2014-05-08, version 1.6* Take an ordinary, aging couple, offer them the opportunity for youthfulness restored and a possibility for enhancements beyond normal human ability, throw in some good old-fashioned consequences, and you just can't help but watch what happens. It's been riveting to read 'since I started, and of course, they write every chapter like a time-jumping cliff-hanger every few frames, so it holds my interest and keeps me waiting for updates. I appreciate that previous chapters are available to download, and don't just stay "on board" to rob my phone of space. It's a well-wrought, engaging story about the human condition, and gritty, interesting visuals from the illustrations. Upgrade Soul shows us a new path into storytelling. Everything plays together in the same direction: illustrations, the story, the score, interactivity... beautifully intertwined. It really takes you deep inside the characters and their desires and fears. This one of them. It did take a long time for new chapters to come out after ch5 as another rater mentions, but since then they have been pretty regular. Story is entertaining. Problem is... You get 2 chapters, and they expect you to pay for chapters that do not exist maybe never will. Do not put an unfinished project out and expect money. That is like going to Starbucks, and the cashier gives you a empty cup promising coffee another day. *update* Although it has taken 3 months to get 2 more chapters since I first commented, it has been quality material. The story keeps you wanting more, and the visuals and music mesh well together. As I said, more chapters more stars. I'll give it five stars when you update chapters weekly. *update* Thus new update was really good. I hope to see quicker updates. Liam ### 2/5 — Great Story, ruined by the wait. *2013-12-29, version 1.5* The story is Fantastic! Great Visuals! It's costs a little much for a short book, but so far it's been worth it. However, given how long it's been between chapter releases, I would not buy this app till the all chapters are released. The first chapters were released on October 28, 2012! Imagine reading a book, whose chapters are not particularly long (maybe 30-40 minutes if reading so far), for more than a year. It's a great story so far, I hope they make a movie out of it, but the wait has completely ruined the experience. I am grateful to buy this app because is worth my time. To be honest, I thought that the creators threw this project in the trash. This was also one of the first times I had spent actual money in the app store. After waiting for over a year, I deleted the app from my phone and periodically checked the app store for updates until I forgot about it. Imagine my surprise when i found out that not only was it updated last year, but that it also was DONE. And now that I just read it, it was GOOD. The story was incredible and the storytelling was flawless. I was rapt the entire time, and I loved how the science concepts were able to hold water (and this is coming from a bio major). The old app had spots for like chapters 10 and 11 I think it was but those seem to be gone. Could not recommend it more. ### 5/5 — If we didn't have established juggernauts... *2015-12-12, version 1.6.1* ...then this company might be able to better expand what is undoubtedly an excellent and modern platform for presenting digital graphic novels. I have not seen any other engines quite as novel as this one. I wrote the creator to commend him about his extraordinary story and platform, and also to find out if there was any way it could be used by non-programmers; alas, he told me that some knowledge in Infinity was necessary, and to have a programmer create something similar was going to be quite costly. This is a bummer because if this engine were more user friendly, I think he would have a gold mine as an alternative company to types like Comixology and their ilk, who just churn out material similar to what you find in a comic book store, rather than material designed for a 21st century tablet. Sigh. Upgrade Soul is what a 21st century comic book should look and feel-like.
