### 2/5 — Tracking me on 3rd party sites

*2024-06-14*

Really CR? I thought you were above that.

### 2/5 — Inadequate Support

*2023-12-17*

A liked the functionality and options of this app until I ran into a problem. I was trying to add a custom item to the kitchen category. Surprisingly, a microwave is not a part of their pre-set. A custom item canNOT be added - no picture, no details. I wrote to customer support, got an answer that they knew about the issue and were working on it. It’s been a month already, nothing happened. To my follow up email, I got a rude answer that they would let me know when it’s fixed. So, for now, I am not motivated to keep adding items as their picture upload doesn’t work even for the pre-set items. That prevents me from adding critical information about the appliances.

### 3/5 — Misleading

*2023-04-26*

I downloaded this app with a referral from my homeowners insurance company with an enticement of “3 months free trial”. The app is helpful and teaches me things to do that I would not have thought about, however, I only got through the 1st month when they started charging me. There have also been some opportunities to speak with the developers through virtual chat sessions, however, I signed up for 2 of these and no one shows up and they get cancelled. So while this is a very helpful app, I’m not sure what to think of the company and developers.

**Developer response:** Hi there,

We're so sorry for the inconveniences our app has caused you. Please email upkept@cr.consumer.org with your feedback. We promise to straighten out the issues you have experienced as soon as possible.

Thank you

### 2/5 — Good in theory

*2023-02-08, version 1.19*

It’s a great idea, and a great looking app - but for the cost, and the fact that notifications do not work (and have never worked) - one of the selling points is the app notifying you when to tend to certain tasks and maintenance routines. So without that functionality in working order, this is just a really expensive database of your appliances and some maintenance tips. Not worth it until the app is fixed, and even then, it’s overpriced.

**Developer response:** Hey there,
Thanks for your feedback! That's very odd that your notifications are not working. Sorry about that!

Have you tried looking in the app's settings and your phone's settings to see if you have notifications turned off?

Happy to trouble shoot this with you, so you can get the most out of the free trial.

Our email is upkept@cr.consumer.org if you want to talk more.

Thanks!

### 3/5 — Looked promising but couldn’t get it to work

*2022-12-04, version 1.19*

It looked very useful but I’ll never know since at the start it insisted on making me enter information about specific appliances, which I did not have, before doing anything else in the app. Without entering all that information, I couldn’t move on to any other features. Too bad. I was excited to try it.

### 2/5 — Does not start well

*2022-10-27, version 1.19*

I was interested in it but was disappointed with the interface. I knew only three of the four data items the program asked for, put those in and did do not know for #4. The app completed the entry, but when I checked the refrigerator/freezer and tried to add the information I simply could not do it. That suggested to me that the app is not well designed, and I am dropping it for now.

Consumer Report, fix it.

### 2/5 — Could be good

*2022-09-11, version 1.17*

Could be good except that I’ve already subscribed and it keeps telling me to access premium parts of the app I have to subscribe.. disappointed.

### 2/5 — Not worth the price

*2022-08-13, version 1.16*

Way too expensive for what it offers.

Needs a free option, and a more robust paid option.

### 4/5 — A good start

*2022-07-20, version 1.15*

Still missing a few appliances, in my case a deep freezer. I might pay a smaller price later on once the app is more established.

### 4/5 — Cool app, but lacks some functionality

*2022-06-13, version 1.14*

The app is very cool and does have some cool feature to it to keep track of all the to dos. But seeing that the basic version is all you get for when you need the subscription doesn’t make sense.

It would be cool if the paid version allowed you to add your own items not listed and add to dos with reminders for those. Pulling in manuals from newer equipment with maintenance recommendations from those would be a good feature as well.

A lot of this I can set up calendar reminders in my google account for free as a recurring event so not as much need to pay for subscription.

But the app overall has a great concept and lots of potential to be super useful for home owners. Especially if we could sit down with our maintenance manuals for the equipment to add periodic maintenance items that aren’t listed here.

**Developer response:** Hi kdkevin10--thanks so much for providing your valuable feedback. It's great to hear what folks want so we can share with our product team. We are working on some cool new features, like adding custom items. Hang tight as more fabulous features are coming!

### 4/5 — So far so good

*2022-05-14, version 1.13*

I really like it so far. However, I really wish there were options for septic and well systems. Or also options to add your own tasks.

### 3/5 — Needs updates to be worth it

*2022-04-04, version 1.12*

This app is great in theory, but for 4.99/month, the amount of bugs you run into is unacceptable. Several items never load (kitchen sink, trees, lawn, to name few) and just sit on the “Please wait” screen and the only way to back out is to force close and start over.

**Developer response:** Hi Danielachante--we're sorry to to see that you've run into a few bugs. These should be resolved and would love for you to give us another try. If you continue to see any, let us know at upkept@cr.consumer.org

### 3/5 — Disappointing

*2022-02-28, version 1.10*

I was really excited about the concept of this app - while technically the function is something you could recreate in many other apps or just your calendar, I love a niche app that is also aesthetically appealing, which this is. It’s fun to tap the icon for each element of your home, upload a photo, enter the model number, lifespan, etc. I love the concept of having all the information on each appliance or area of your home in one easy to find place, especially the different sections for receipts and parts.

I had to give only three stars (I almost gave just two), and I will be canceling my subscription, because the actual maintenance plans in general are *extremely* lacking. A few of the major appliances have more unique and tailored maintenance tasks, but the majority of the other “maintenance plans” are just annual “do a visual inspection”, “make repairs as needed”, “do a deep clean”. This wouldn’t be as disappointing if the app gave you an option to ADD your OWN tasks - but it doesn’t!

Customizing and adding your own tasks seems like SUCH a basic feature and I can’t believe it doesn’t come with this option. Heck, even just being able to adjust the frequency of the task would be better - cleaning my range hood only once a YEAR? It needs it far more often than that.

There is also no option to add your own appliances or home elements, which would be helpful as the ones available are limited. There’s no microwave, free-standing bathtub, patio, fireplace…lots of basic home elements.

I REALLY wanted to like this app, and I honestly never write reviews, but the creator of this app seems to actually notice reviews so I thought I’d give it a shot. Please, add these things if you can, and I’d be happy to renew my subscription!

### 4/5 — Lots of Potential

*2022-01-27, version 1.8*

Downloaded the app and went through the setup which was super easy and straight forward. There is a lot of useful info and detail maintenance plans for all kinds of home items.

One thing that would be a great feature is to include warranty tracking and notes about repairs. I’ve had to call in for warranty repairs and tracking down which items have 1/5/10 yr warranties is difficult.

**Developer response:** Hi WoodlandlT--thanks for sharing your feedback and providing a rating. We're always working to improve the app and your feedback gives us great insight into what customers want.

### 2/5 — I’m sorry but no

*2022-01-21, version 1.8*

This app is purely to mine data from consumers to enable consumer reports to sell reports. That’s all fine and all but it’s insults to see that they want the end user to pay for this. Useless app

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — $60/yr forever for info in every manual and home repair website

*2023-01-26, version 1.19*

This app is ridiculously expensive. I subscribe to Consumer Reports. I downloaded the app after reading about it in their print magazine. I finally got around to setting up Upkept nearly a year later and am told the app costs $5/mo. What?! I get charging for additional services like in-person support, but a monthly charge for an automated app is absurd, especially when it's developed by a publication I already pay for.

**Developer response:** Hi there,
I hear your frustration!

We do our best to keep your costs low, but right now the monthly fee is needed to cover our costs to improve and maintain Upkept.

The app provides over 250 personalized maintenance plans to caring for and maintaining your home.

And if you want to see if its worth the money, you can try 1 month for free and decide if you want to pay going forward.

Thanks!

### 1/5 — No point in downloading

*2023-01-22, version 1.19*

You might as well make your app $5 if you’re going to make them pay to use it anyway.

### 1/5 — Monthly fee for use

*2022-12-18, version 1.19*

I could only enter 1 item. Then the app won’t go any further before it demands a monthly (about $5) subscription fee. For $600/ year I could buy a new appliance or item! No thanks.

### 1/5 — Not quite enticing enough

*2022-09-09, version 1.17*

I was going to use a few basic upkeeps without signing up for a trial, but you can’t even put the kitchen sink on here without a pop up.

No thanks. I’ll go back to paper and pen just because I already have those without a subscription.

One idea might be a lifetime subscription, but not enough ‘trials’ to keep my attention to try.

### 1/5 — Immediate subscription required

*2022-09-06, version 1.16*

You can’t even try this for a day without signing up with your personal info for a $4.99 a month subscription. That’s insane.

### 1/5 — Sells your info

*2022-07-18, version 1.15*

Right after I set up an account on this app, I started getting a TON of calls, emails, and texts regarding services I had “requested”. Most of the calls were from numbers with my same area code, although I do not live in that area and would never request services from vendors there. I can only assume that this app is a scam to sell your information to vendors in your phone number area. Do not use this app.

### 1/5 — Forces you into subscribing.

*2022-05-23, version 1.13*

You get a pop up saying you can check it out free for a month. You then have to click ‘got it’ which they feel counts as you agreeing to a subscription.

### 1/5 — Disappointing for an expensive app

*2022-04-04, version 1.12*

Half of the things that I try to add get me stuck on a “Please wait…” screen and never load. I have to force kill the app to get out of it. It is doing this when I try to add specific items, including a kitchen faucet, electrical panel, plumbing, and I’m sure others as well. I will be requesting a refund from the apple store.

### 1/5 — Constant error messages

*2022-03-05, version 1.10*

I downloaded and added a few things, but after I closed the app, I have had constant error messages. It won’t bring up the data I imputed and just says something went wrong. I have closed and reopened. Logged out. Reinstalled. Nothing is working. What a waste of time. I cannot believe they charge people for such a problematic app. I don’t know what all the app can do because I haven’t been able to use it. I am disappointed and upset at wasting so much of my time.

**Developer response:** Hi AgLlama--we're so sorry to read the app isn't working right for you. If you'd like to provide more details on the error you're getting, shoot us an email at upkept@cr.consumer.org so we can take a look. The first 30 days are at no cost and if you'd like to keep access, you'll get a pop up at the end of the 30 days asking you if you'd like to continue and then you'll be charged.

### 1/5 — Great in theory

*2022-01-17, version 1.8*

I’ve tried downloading and deleting multiple times over a few weeks and never can get past the first few pages without a error. Different download, different page for the error.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — A must-have for home maintenance sticklers

*2024-01-21*

Great app that gives tons of insight into home maintenance and lots of to dos that you might not have thought of. The ability to store item information and receipts is great and love the customizability for to do items. It’s a little rough around the edges with some glitches here and there but overall works pretty well and I find it super handy!

### 5/5 — Great Value

*2023-02-20, version 2.0*

$4.99/mo with no ads with the potential of saving you $1000s in costly repairs from poor upkeep is a stellar value.
I only wish there was an option to pay for your subscription through the Consumer Reports website rather than through the app. I’d much rather have CR get the 30% cut that Apple gouges from app subscriptions.
Grading upkeep items as critical, important or extra credit helps prioritize home maintenance without getting overwhelmed.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the feedback! Upkept and Consumer Reports are separate subscriptions, but we appreciate hearing the feedback on combining them! Our team is always looking for features to add to improve the app! Thank you for your suggestion!

### 5/5 — Good so far, but not great

*2022-11-19, version 1.19*

Would like to see freezers added and maybe the ability to add small appliances

### 5/5 — Great so far

*2022-03-19, version 1.11*

This app is great to keep you on track of maintaining a home. I’d like for there to be an option for putting certain tasks on a certain month though.

### 5/5 — Helped save my fridge!

*2021-09-28, version 1.6*

I never thought to check the gasket on my fridge until this app told me to. Turns out there was a tear the size of a nickel and because of this app I was able to identify it and get it repaired before the entire unit died.

**Developer response:** Hi PureTurbonium,
We're so glad we were able to help you save your fridge! We love hearing how Upkept is useful to you.

### 5/5 — Worthwhile and Very Detailed

*2021-09-11, version 1.5*

I don’t know how people are complaining about the cost of the app, which is very obvious even before downloading it, and it comes after a *90-day* free trial, which is very generous as far as apps go. Even then, is $4.99 a month, and as a first-time homeowner, that’s nothing to save me the hassle (and inevitable cost) of figuring it all out myself. Still more, the details are exhaustive as to completing each task. I’m really enjoying it so far, and I look forward to future updates. Great work (UI is real nice) and worthwhile.

**Developer response:** Hi Caesar,

We're glad you're enjoying the app and really appreciate the feedback!

### 5/5 — A homeowner’s dream!

*2021-07-14, version 1.0*

This app makes it so useful to maintain those easy to forget maintenance items for my home.

### 5/5 — A must have for all homeowners

*2021-07-14, version 1.0*

I just bought my first house and have been a little stressed over maintenance. This app is exactly what I was looking for. The maintenance plans are easy to follow and contain valuable tips. Absolutely brilliant app 🙏🏼

**Developer response:** Congrats on your first home! We love hearing that Upkept is what you've been looking for and is making things easier for you.

### 4/5 — So close

*2023-08-02*

I really want to go all in with this app but I wish I could fully customize items. I cannot find a way to delete or modify the starting tasks that may not be relevant to my exact item. For example my generator requires a monthly maintenance run but the default task is every 3 months and cannot be changed.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the suggestion! We are always looking to improve, so i've passed on your comment about editing our pre-set items to our production team.In the meantime, we do have a 'custom item' feature, where you can create an item and customize it as needed.

If you have any other features you'd like to see or have any questions about using our custom item feature please feel free to reach out to upkept@cr.consumer.org.

### 4/5 — Freemium Needed

*2022-10-12, version 1.18*

Great idea for an app - would recommend doing a freemium model so i can track maybe 3-5 things initially before paying. Won’t be using it if I need to pay 5$ a month right away.
