## What is Vaken?

Vaken is a breathing app with one job: help you take the control back.

A ring grows when you inhale. Shrinks when you exhale. That's it. No voices, no timers to set, no streaks to lose. Just a ring that breathes with you.

WHY VAKEN EXISTS

Dan built Vaken after three tours in Afghanistan and a PTSD diagnosis in 2017. Breathing was the tool that carried him through. Vaken is the app he wished he'd had back then.

Vaken is not a wellness app. It doesn't promise to cure anything. It gives you access to the oldest tool we have as humans, your own breath, in the simplest form it can be delivered.

WHAT YOU GET (FREE)

• The ring, breathes with you, with haptic feedback
• Mild · 3·5 rhythm, 3 sec in, 5 sec out (daily use)
• Six languages: Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, English, German

That's it. Try the ring. See if it works for you.

CALM FOR ADHD (FREE, ALWAYS)

One swipe away lives a whole page for ADHD brains:

• Kids mode: a gentle snake that breathes along with your child. Its belly fills as you breathe in and empties as you breathe out, so children learn belly breathing just by breathing along. No numbers, no pressure, and a grown-up lock keeps the child inside the kids view
• Focus sounds for grown-ups: brown and white noise, can help concentration
• Made to be used together with an adult

None of it sits behind a paywall. Vaken was built to help children with ADHD too.

WHAT YOU DON'T GET

• No ads
• No subscriptions
• No dark patterns
• No push notifications pressuring you to open the app
• No AI analyzing your breathing
• No social feed, no competition, no streaks to lose

FOR THOSE WHO KNOW THE FIGHT

If you're a veteran, a first responder, dealing with stress, anxiety, insomnia, or just tired, this is built by someone who has sat in that chair. No polish, no promises that can't be kept.

One ring. Your breath. The control back.

Vaken is designed and developed in Denmark/Norway. Built by Dan Kristoffer Holmstad, Norwegian-Danish veteran, three ISAF tours to Helmand Province.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.0.0 — 2026-07-07

A new page: Calm for ADHD. Swipe sideways from the home screen to find focus sounds (brown and white noise) for grown-ups and a kids mode where a gentle snake breathes along with your child. The snake's belly fills as you breathe in and empties as you breathe out, so children learn belly breathing just by breathing along. Short exercises, no numbers, and a quiet star as a thank-you when the exercise is done.

All of it is free, always. Vaken was built to help children with ADHD too. This is that promise kept.

Also new: the snake's friends. Breathe more days and the giraffe, the crocodile and the hippo wake up — and the snake gets a nightcap. Nothing can be lost, everything is earned with calm.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-06-09

Safety screening: an optional set of questions at the start that tailors which breathing rhythms Vaken recommends to you. For some bodies, deep or slow breathing makes things worse, not better, and then Vaken points you to the calmer rhythms instead. The questions are about what you experience, not about diagnoses. Every answer stays on your phone and is never sent anywhere.

You can retake the screening anytime in Settings.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-05-22

Training plan: pick a weekly target (3, 5 or 7 sessions) and 1-3 fixed reminders. Vaken counts your sessions and tracks your weekly streak. Breathwork only kicks in under panic once the muscle memory is trained, this is the practice.

Plus all 1.0.1 fixes: Action Button clears open screens before crisis flow, the screen stays awake during sessions, new haptic feedback that does not fight the audio, StandBy/Home Screen widget with tap-to-breathe.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-05-12

Improvements based on your feedback: haptic feedback with selectable pattern, StandBy widget, and better localization across all languages. Thanks for using Vaken.

### 1.0 — 2026-05-07
