## What is VanityCast?

VanityCast is the podcast app for people who don't just listen, but listen deliberately. A dedicated audio engine, serious organization and full privacy – all without an account.

BETTER SOUND (DEDICATED AUDIO ENGINE)
• Automatic loudness leveling: quiet and loud episodes play at an even volume – with a limiter to prevent clipping.
• Smart Speed: detects silence and shortens pauses dynamically – and shows you how much time you save.
• Fine-tune volume per podcast in decibels (−12 to +12 dB).

ORGANIZATION OVER CHAOS
• Smart Inbox: all your unplayed episodes with filters (unplayed, in progress, today, this week), sorting & swipe actions.
• Prioritized playlists: grouped, or as a ranked round-robin across multiple podcasts.
• Smart Queue (Up Next): filled manually or automatically – by newest, shortest, random episodes and more.
• Favorites, archive and automatic downloads per podcast.

YOUR LISTENING STATS
• Listening time by day, month, year and per podcast – plus a shareable summary.

FIND & SUBSCRIBE
• Apple Podcasts search and charts for discovery.
• Add any RSS feed directly by URL.
• OPML import and export – bring your subscriptions with you.

LISTEN YOUR WAY
• A comfortable player with variable speed, sleep timer, ±15/30 second skip, AirPlay and lock-screen controls.
• Downloads for on the go – including Wi-Fi only, storage limit and automatic cleanup of played episodes.
• Local notifications for new episodes.

YOUR DATA STAYS YOURS
• No account, no sign-up, no tracking.
• Everything runs locally on your device.

DESIGN
• A clean, dark interface focused on the content.

VanityCast – podcasts, organized.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.0.2 — 2026-09-22

Fixed:
• Your saved position is now kept even on slow connections. Previously it could be lost in rare cases when a streamed episode was slow to start.

### 2.0.1 — 2026-09-14

Fixed:
• Episodes now reliably resume where you left off. Previously, a streamed episode could start over after auto-advancing or an app restart – and the saved position was lost in the process.

### 2.0 — 2026-09-07

New:
• iCloud sync can now be switched off. Your library then stays on this device alone – existing episodes, playback progress and downloads are kept.

Improved:
• Refreshing is noticeably faster: podcasts now load in parallel instead of one after another. With around 30 subscriptions it takes just a few seconds.
• All content now arrives over encrypted connections only – feeds, artwork, chapters and episodes. Older unencrypted addresses are upgraded automatically, and broken or oversized responses are discarded instead of filling up memory.
• Home and Podcasts now show whether a refresh is running and when the last one finished – including new episodes and feeds that could not be reached.

Fixed:
• Episodes reliably belong to the right podcast again. Anything filed incorrectly before – most visible as the wrong artwork – is moved back automatically during a refresh, keeping playback progress, favourites and downloaded files intact.
• Nothing disappears any more when a second device tidies up: episodes you have finished stay in your library, they do not come back as unplayed after switching devices, and downloaded episodes stay in the downloads list. Files stranded by the old behaviour are removed on first launch.
• “Later” now shows what it does: the episode is marked in the list, a short message confirms the action – including when it is already queued – and the queue is reachable straight from the inbox.
• The OPML export now points out when the file contains credentials for paid subscriptions in plain text – worth knowing before you pass it on.
• Repeated pull-to-refresh no longer aborts without doing anything.

### 1.6 — 2026-08-02

Fixed:
• CarPlay: the steering-wheel buttons seek within the episode again – a short press jumps 30 seconds forward or 15 seconds back, a long press moves to the next or previous episode.
• The share sheet is now fully available in English; parts of it previously appeared in German.
• Siri Shortcuts and app actions now appear fully in English when the system language is set to English.

Also in this update (the notes for the last version were unfortunately incomplete):
• Sharing, rethought: share episodes and podcasts in your format – choose the scope (link only, with description or with show notes) and the format (plain text, Markdown or a note with frontmatter for Obsidian & co.), with a live preview. Optionally with a timestamp and cover art; podcasts including their RSS feed.
• Support the developer: leave a one-time tip or take out a yearly supporter subscription. Supporters get alternate app icons and a badge – no features are ever locked.
• Downloads are stored with the correct file extension – previously unplayable downloads are repaired automatically.
• Playback reliably resumes after interruptions (calls, navigation).
• Duplicate podcasts and episodes from iCloud sync across devices are merged automatically.

### 1.4 — 2026-07-16

First release of VanityCast:
• Dedicated audio engine: loudness leveling, Smart Speed & per-podcast dB
• Listening stats & prioritized playlists
• Smart Inbox, Smart Queue & Home overview
• Apple search, RSS feeds & OPML import/export
• Player with variable speed, sleep timer & AirPlay
• Downloads with Wi-Fi only & automatic cleanup
• Local notifications for new episodes
