But I recieved an insurance check for around ten thousand dollars. They did not only freeze the insurance check, but also my pay check and every other dime I had in the account. I understand a hold on a check of that sum, but to freeze the money I live on, that I feed my family with? And my pay check had been direct deposited for a year. Nothing suspicious about it. And then they said it will be two business days before I hear from them. On a Thursday that means Monday at the earliest. Ridiculous. I was excited when they brought it back again albeit with the conditions of having your account for 60 days and 1k in deposits. But this is a lie. I met those conditions, but there are more that they don’t tell you. This is what the rep told me: “please be aware that eligibility is determined by a variety of internal security guidelines and account factors designed to ensure the safety of your funds. These evaluations are conducted automatically and are subject to Varo's discretion.” So I’m upset and frustrated because Zelle would be very helpful. Don’t advertise it so loudly if there are strings attached. Not even for the friend recommendation reward, but simply because I loved Varo. but with their new policy update, it’s only 3.75%. I feel as though this takes away one of the perks of Varo. Especially since it’s strictly an online bank there are limits to what they can provide while a brick and mortar bank can provide in person services and cash transfers. While I don’t mind finding other ways getting cash through ATMS or cash back from stores. It does put a damper on things knowing that one of the main reasons I promoted Varo has been taken away. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Waste of time. *2026-08-23, version 4.39.0* They tell me I’m approved for an advance but then say my bank doesn’t qualify. All deception to get you to switch your direct deposit to them. I’ve never had a bank that restricted an advertised feature. Do not download this app once I get my money I will be closing this app and account ### 1/5 — Treated poorly by Varo for being a victim of abuse and theft! *2026-08-09, version 4.37.1* I am deeply saddened by how Varo treated me during an already difficult time. After fleeing from an abusive relationship, I was in the process of rerouting my mail but unfortunately before my address change went through, my new Varo debit card was sent to the address where I had been previously living at with my abuser. Not surprisingly he didn't hesitate to open my mail and spend my money that I had pre-loaded onto the card (which for insult to injury, I had only preloaded funds on the card, AT THE SUGGESTION OF VARO! They 'recommended' that I pre-load funds onto my card to be able to use it immediately upon arrival.!) I immediately contacted Varo support for help reporting the theft, when I got notification of the situation. Instead of helping me investigate or recover my funds, Varo completely closed my account and banned me from opening another, claiming "fraudulent practices." Instead of supporting a victim of mail theft and financial abuse, Varo treated me like the perpetrator. Losing my money and being locked out of my account when I was trying to rebuild my life was heartbreaking. ### 1/5 — NOT REAL BANK *2026-08-09, version 4.37.1* Be careful that think not helpful and your money not safe in there. If you got some trick and lose your money there is no way to cancel it not like another bank. I am leaving that asap.
