## What is VAT Refund?

The posted VAT rate is not what you get back.

Between refund operator commissions and currency conversion markups, the amount that actually reaches your card can be far below the tax you paid. VAT Refund shows you the real number — before you're standing at the counter deciding whether it's worth it.

- Enter what you paid. See the tax portion, the operator's cut, and your estimated net refund, itemized line by line.
- Compare refund routes side by side — major operators versus claiming directly at the store — so you can see what each one costs you.
- Check the minimum spend for each country before you shop, not after.
- Know where and how to claim: which countries use digital export validation, which still need a paper customs stamp, and what to do at the airport.

Japan's tax-free system changes on November 1, 2026 — from exemption at the register to a refund claimed on departure. The app already knows both sets of rules and switches automatically on the day. No update required.

Tax rules change, and they change without warning. Every country entry shows when its figures were last checked, and any entry we haven't independently verified says so plainly. Treat every number as an estimate and confirm with the merchant and customs before you rely on it.

### 3.2.2 — 2026-08-23

Corrected country rules — including several that could have cost you the whole refund.

- Japan: the app now carries both the current rules and the new system taking effect November 1, 2026, and switches over automatically on the day.
- Netherlands: the customs stamp was abolished on January 1, 2026. We no longer send you looking for one — an unstamped invoice is now correct.
- Spain: DIVA kiosks only validate purchases made in Spain. If you bought elsewhere in Europe, those receipts still need a manual stamp. Now stated clearly.
- Corrected minimum spend for Italy, Ireland, Denmark and France. Italy's threshold dropped to €70 back in 2024 — if the app previously told you a purchase didn't qualify, check again.
- France: purchases can be combined across three consecutive days, not just one.

Also fixed
- Amounts typed with a comma or period now read correctly whichever way you write them, with a live preview so you can see exactly what was entered.
- Every country now shows its own last-checked date, and unverified entries say so.
- Keyboard, layout and large-text fixes throughout.

I also corrected inaccurate details in my store materials: the number of 
supported destinations, the list of refund operators shown in the comparison 
table, and a processing-fee figure that no longer reflects how the app 
calculates refunds. All now match what the app actually provides.
