It’s undergone a lot of restructuring over the recent years. One thing I have found that makes me start to hate this app that I once loved and used to help me more than anything in my life is the censorship. We are not allowed to post anything within the realm of nsfw content. I think that this takes away from the original purpose of vent as a whole. This app was meant to be a place to vent all the awful and ugly and horrifying feelings that people feel. But now I can’t make a post that goes in depth with all the awful ugly scary things I feel or have experienced in my life. It has made me not want to use the app anymore sometimes bc I can’t truly VENT anymore. There shouldn’t ever be censorship of venting. People deserve a space to be real, to express the horrible things they feel and have been through, and censoring those things is just plain idiotic. ### 4/5 — Good app when you find the right people *2023-10-25* I’m having an issue though, my posts keep disappearing from my Feed. Many updates! Very useful and ethical. However, I don’t know if there’s a glitch bc I have the app on my iPad AND iphone? I use the private diary feature a lot and sometimes I write a long post, recently can see there is a character limit which is frustrating, I may have to change to another diary app. ### 4/5 — Keeps me going *2023-05-22* I’ve been using this app for 7 years now. It’s the perfect place for me to get all of the thoughts out of my head. I usually only come to the app when I’m at my lowest, cause I have no one to talk to about it, but lots of people post regular updates of their life, good and bad. It’s nice to see people getting better, gives you hope. I’m still getting used to the new update, I don’t think it’s as easy to use as it used to be, but I’ll get used to it. This app is honestly a lifeline for me, so I thoroughly recommend it to anyone whose thoughts get to them or for people who struggle to talk about their feelings. Using this app is like throwing it all into a void, and sometimes people will react or write a comment to support you. It’s by no means a replacement for therapy or actually talking it out with someone, but it helps until you’re ready to do that. (A nice feature is that you can become a helper if you’re one of those lovely mentally stable people who can help others, you have the option to help or be helped 🥰) ### 2/5 — Downhill for a while *2023-05-11* Been using on and off since 2017 and it has been going downhill steadily. It used to be a quick and convenient place to vent and catalogue feelings as they come and go, but the app performance has been getting worse every year. The nail in the coffin for me is the new confusing and cluttered UI and profile layouts. Can’t recommend anymore. ### 4/5 — used as a standard socmed *2023-04-25* i and other people in my social sphere use vent as a social media platform, so i have no idea if vent works as a mental health app. however as a social media app, it does quite well. i particularly appreciate that you can post to "mutuals only", and i find the reaction buttons to posts really fun. generally it is really easy to curate your experience on vent if you know how to use the block button. as with the internet at large, there are some weirdos and jerks on Vent, but their block button actually works (unlike Sup lol!) in terms of critique, i find the new vent app design personally unappealing, but also unintuitive. if i were a new user i may easily feel overwhelmed by the multitude of features that aren't really explained to the user in an easily readable form. i also do just think the new vent app looks ugly; sorry. it sincerely is so clunky and boxy. ### 2/5 — The Re-Launch made it worse *2023-04-16* I loved this app so much, there wasn’t anything else like it. I loved the people I met there, the communities, they way people shaped it to become what it is now. However, the change that they made to the app is just one I can’t rlly get into. I don’t like the style, the layout, I miss the old EVERYTHING from Vent, now I hardly use it cuz it just feels bad. It’s such a damn shame, I was so happy when they said they weren’t taking it down but now it’s just bad, I don’t like the way it is anymore. The other vent-like apps are all the same too. So all you can do is just comment and react to posts ### 1/5 — Lifesaving but TalkLife Destroyed it *2023-02-24* This app came a long way. It has saved my life, given me a new family, and helped me get by on my worst days. This app and community was amazing after a while. Now, TalkLife has bought it out and phenomenally mucked it up. They had an already set revenue source and tanked it, with no concern for the literal lives that depend on it. When I say that TalkLife really “mucked” it up, please know that I mean with an “F.” I will get by without this app somehow, but I cannot imagine the thousands who will not. TalkLife has lied and hurt all of the Vent community by shutting it down under false pretenses. The least you could have done was be honest and give us all a heads up so we had time to find other alternatives. Or you could have helped us to find alternatives. Or you could have done your jobs and not tanked the “competitor’s” app that you decided to absorb. You could have built a better business model if money was truly the only factor. So many things as a responsible, trustworthy, successful company you could have done. I’ll be boycotting TalkLife until I’m dead. ### 1/5 — So many pedos on here *2022-11-17* Downloaded this app around the age of 11-12 and got heavily groomed on this app by grown adults. I can only blame the app so much, however there is little protection for children and many nsfw posts on here. I wouldn’t recommend this app to anyone under the age of 18. ### 4/5 — Good idea, has issues *2022-08-05* I love this app. It’s a good idea and a fairly unique format. The people are generally pleasant. However… it’s absolutely full of bugs. Often the reaction button have persistence issues. Push notifications don’t work. Basically the whole app has been down for the last two days. It’s wonderful when it works. But it spends too much time not quite working. Edit: app was down for almost five days. Has since been largely fixed. Bugs are much improved, at least for the moment. Notifications are still functionally nonexistent. **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback! Like do you just wait till someone requests? I got one request (a whole two days after I downloaded the app) and I vented to them AND THEY DIDNT EVEN REPLY and then a few days later they weren’t on my listener’s list anymore ?? do yall know how hurtful that is ?? 1a) it was kinda hurtful seeing “You have no listeners” when ur going thru a hard time 2) Very glitchy and has internet connection issues Honestly you’ll have an easier time venting on reddit or something **Developer response:** Hi there! We hope to see you back on the app soon! ### 1/5 — Trigger-happy Staff *2022-06-25, version 7.5.2* I have had an account on vent for over a year, which I used every few months. Today, I attempted to log onto the app, just to see that my account was deleted. I attempted to log in on a different account, only to be told that I was put in a so called “naughty corner,” aka device banned. I never made a single nsfw post, posted about any sort of gore or harm, made a callout post, etc. I had three accounts, which is about the same as many other people I saw and I did all have uses for. I did not receive a single warning from the Vent staff before I was banned. I did not receive a single email when I was banned. I only realized when I attempted to log into the app this morning in a fragile mental state, as I was planning to use it to vent. The app told me to contact support, but provides no way to contact the support team. I reviewed the community guidelines after I was banned, and couldn’t find a single one that I was violating. This app is ridiculous. Don’t bother downloading Vent, because the staff will ban you when you need help with your mental health the most. **Developer response:** Hi there, we only device ban or suspend users if they have breached our Community Guidelines. Vent will not tolerate any form of abusive behaviour. Thank you! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Not What It Used To Be *2024-08-01* App is under new management and what was once an app for those struggling with mental health is now unusable for most with mental health issues. Does not listen with much compassion to its user-base. Hoping it changes for the better and user-base’s voices are heard. ### 1/5 — It’s gone through an unfortunate change *2024-07-13* A while ago vent switched owners and to keep the app running they changed a lot about it to match their existing apps. That’s all fine and dandy, but lately the #1 issue is moderation, with communication being a close second. The owner has recently released a new set of guidelines, meant to supposedly be more specific and clear up the communication issues between users and moderators, but it’s done probably the exact opposite. Now, non triggering posts are getting automatically tagged with a warning, presumably without giving any notice to the poster. Not to mention, these moderators have a clear misunderstanding of how mental health issues present themselves and what classifies as an actual crisis, leading to a lot of users feeling as if they can’t even ‘vent’ anymore. The unfortunate thing is that these are problems that can be fixed, however the owner likes to brush of a lot of the community’s concerns and acting like him running the app poorly is somehow better than nothing just because he ‘doesn’t make money off of this app’ and it’s supposedly a passion project. There would be less issues if they were properly specific about their guidelines and actually have their moderators do their jobs consistently. I’d happily give a better review if they would just stop acting like us mentally ill folks don’t know how to keep ourselves safe or understand our own experiences better than the folks running the app. ### 1/5 — Unmoderated, Run by flag-happy bots *2024-07-08* Used to be a safe space where I found meaningful friends and community. I’ve been on this app for more than 8 years and for the first time I’m feeling genuinely unhappy with the state it’s in. The app owner makes calls that don’t make sense and then doesn’t explain himself to a rightfully upset userbase. Major updates to community guidelines enforce censorship to an extreme degree. Topics such as suicide, self harm, and eating disorders are all but banned on an app said to focus on open communication around mental health issues. Would not recommend if you’re looking for a place to truly vent about what you’re feeling. Highly restricted and unfriendly to the topics it claims to prioritize. Sad to see my favorite app for almost a decade in this current state and can’t help but feel that truly absorbing community feedback could fix some of these issues. While you’re reading this, I would recommend against Talklife too. Owned by the same individual and is even more restrictive, from personal experience. ### 1/5 — support pedophiles more than the mentally ill *2024-05-28* As a big time user of Vent (since 2016) and as much as I want to graciously give this app full stars, I can’t. The moderation staff will delete your mutual only posts and belittle you and tell you you have suicidal ideation after your vent gets deleted. Jamie Druitt does not know how to run an app let alone a business and he somehow manages to do both. The app is bombarded with pedophiles and bigots but the moderation staff turns a blind eye to that and instead targets their mentally ill user-base and bans them after they express unhappiness with their current situations. If you are a private account and vent, prepare to feel unsafe because the moderators can see everything you post and will delete your post if you so happen to mention arab.org or any self depreciating thoughts. SAVE YOURSELF THE ENERGY AND DO NOT GET THIS APP! They use their own personal bias and vendettas as the base for whether or not a post will get taken down and when deciding whether or not a user will be banned/suspended. It makes me wonder why any of these incompetent fools are still employed. They need to fully replace their staff with people who can actually agree on a set of rules and stick to them instead of bringing their personal feelings into the rulings. They also rarely implement features users ask for and instead mess up and change things we never asked for. They're also terrible at preventing ban evading as I've seen banned people come back and make several new accounts in a day. This app would be wonderful under a different, actually intelligent staff. ### 1/5 — I hate the new update *2023-04-15* This used to be one of my fave apps to let things out that I couldn’t share to my friends and family, but since this update, not only is my old groups gone, but I can’t even log into my old accounts!!!! 😤😤 ### 1/5 — New update massive downgrade *2023-04-03* There is no way to choose where old posts are posted to in the new update. We used to be able to, for example, change posts from public to diary now we can’t? Please fix this or explain how to do it. It’s also unnecessarily difficult to navigate and some of us DO NOT want our ages default shown to the public. Many users are confused when they try to download Vent and cannot use it whatsoever. I miss Vent but it needs to be taken down immediately as it is not a functioning app anymore! To those having issues, check their Twitter where they explained 2 months ago they are shutting it down but NEVER removed it from the store. If you are of extreme poor mental health, they do offer to hide triggering content posted by other users, which I believe you can customise on top of the regular options. However if you are of extreme poor mental health, take care of scrolling through the feed as it does consist of others emotions and feelings, take care in not taking anything on board if you can’t handle that. ❤️ ### 5/5 — Update this app is good, however… *2023-04-19* I have been harassed on this app and I’ve been flashed by a woman and a man wanted to video chat me, also there are people out there promoting suicide to tell them to “kill themselves” I flagged it luckily. But here is my main issue about this, people can make multiple accounts on here to bully or harass a person on here if they wanted to and that’s not ok for someone to do that. It’s sickening how some people would want to fight one of another whether they are trans or cis or whatever they are. And people need to respect each other on what other believe in and step off if they don’t like the topic.
