## What is Vertically Verse?

Vertically Verse is a scripture reader built the traditional way — fully vertical, with characters stacking top to bottom and columns reading right to left, exactly as CJK text was meant to be set.

Read the Bible in Korean, Japanese, or Chinese, each in a classic translation, with a single tap to switch languages. Every control, gesture, and transition is designed around the vertical, right-to-left axis — not a horizontal app with rotated text, but a reading experience rethought from the ground up.

• Fully vertical, right-to-left typesetting with proper CJK glyph orientation
• Three translations: Korean 한글 킹제임스, Japanese 口語訳, Chinese 和合本
• Serif (명조) or sans (고딕) typefaces
• Adjustable font size and line spacing
• Dark, sepia, and light reading themes
• Highlight verses and navigate the full 66-book canon
• Two reading layouts: continuous flow and structured page

Designed for anyone who wants to read scripture the way vertical CJK text is meant to be read.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.1 — 2026-09-15

Legibility and polish.

Verse numbers are larger and easier to pick out, and they now scale properly with all three text sizes instead of shrinking away at the smallest one. The swipe hint in 묵상하기 is no longer so faint, and the book name there no longer breaks across two columns.

In 절별 the two page arrows are now one control rather than two separate buttons. Several Japanese and Chinese labels have also been corrected — 節別 in particular was a Korean coinage that is not a word in either language.

### 1.3 — 2026-09-03

묵상하기 — a new way to sit with a single verse.

One verse fills the screen, and nothing moves on its own. You swipe at your own pace, and the text forms and disperses as you go. By default each swipe carries you one verse onward through the Bible, continuing across the end of a chapter or a book. Turn on 랜덤 and every swipe brings a different verse instead, drawn from a few hundred chosen because they read well on their own.

Open it from the quotation mark in the side rail, or from any verse you have tapped. Save a verse from there, or tap the reference to jump to it in the reader.

Also in this release: reading forward in Japanese no longer stops on chapters the 口語訳 does not contain, and a number of interface labels have been corrected in Japanese and Chinese.

### 1.2.2 — 2026-08-10

Two interaction fixes in this release. Choosing a book in the navigator no longer makes the book list jump back to the start — the row stays where you tapped so you can go straight to picking a chapter. And tapping Save on a selected verse now saves it and closes the menu in one step, instead of leaving the menu open until you tap the verse again.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-08-03

Highlighted and selected verses now draw as one continuous block down the column. The highlight was previously built from a stack of per-glyph segments, which could leave faint seams between characters — it is now a single rounded shape per run, including where a verse ends partway down a column.

### 1.2 — 2026-08-01

Redesigned settings. The two reading layouts are now a pair of cards that diagram their own direction — 흐름 shows columns running right to left, 절별 shows two rows read top to bottom — and typeface, theme and text size sit together underneath. Text size is now three steps: 작게 / 보통 / 크게.

The 절별 layout paginates one row at a time on the vertical axis: swipe up (or tap the rail's ⌄ caret) and the page scrolls up by exactly one row, so the row you were reading at the bottom becomes the top row. Swipe down (⌃) to go back, including across chapter boundaries.

The navigator, settings and saved-verses panels are floating glass sheets that grow out of the right edge, and saved verses set the chapter and verse as a single sideways reference (23:1).

New app icon.
