Compressing videos and photos quickly while maintaining high quality is a very resource-intensive task, so it’s normal for your phone to heat up or slow down while the compression is running. This is unavoidable when everything is processed directly on your device. The upside is that your photos and videos never leave your phone. Some other apps upload your media to their servers to perform the compression, but we chose to keep everything local so your files stay private. ### 5/5 — Updated Review *2025-12-07* The new changes further cement this as the best app for HEVC video compression on iOS and Mac for your iCloud photo and video library. I sent an email requesting a bunch of new features a few months back and they incorporated every single one of the features into this latest update. You have full control to see before/after compression, ability to keep original FPS, and quality, and ability to sort videos by size and other useful filters to explore your video library. It used to not be able to run through the entire iCloud photo library but that is not an issue anymore and the bug has been fixed. Feels like Apple made it now and is well worth the price. The developer responds to questions and suggestions very quickly. The developer responds to questions and suggestions very quickly. Without a doubt, HEVcut is the BEST video compressing app I have found in the Apple App Store. It does cost a bit more than other compression apps, however this is the ONLY app that I have found that when the video is compressed it looks as good as the original with a substantial savings of file size. Plus it’s cross compatible with Mac, iPad and iPhone. Worth every dollar spend on this app. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ### 4/5 — Nice App *2025-10-29* I really like the UI and it does work really well. Developer helped me *2025-03-26* It worked great for the first few minutes. Then it asked me to upgrade. Sure. Soon after that.. every single video gives me this error and I cannot go forward. Edit: Dev responded and pointed out an issue with low disk space. Turns out yes, thats what was happening. It’s iCloud’s fault, not the apps. **Developer response:** Hi, Sorry about the trouble! Wishing you all the best! ### 3/5 — Could be great, not quite there yet. *2025-12-05, version 6.7.1* Has potential, and is the only tool of its kind I could find, but it has some issues. No progress bar, no scroll bars (Mac), no way to know what you are deleting after compression, iPad first interface. I have over 7,000 videos, and they appear in a very long list. Currently I think 60 videos have converted, but I only know that because it’s offering to delete 60 videos. I have hit delete, but it seems to be doing nothing. I have also hit Stop, but there is no indication as to whether it has. Activity monitor says it has, so I guess it has, but it’s all a bit unclear. I had success with the ‘free trial’ compressing 2 or 3 videos, and it did a good job, but only now after paying 20 odd quid and getting into the weeds do these issues become clear. ### 3/5 — Expensive *2025-12-02* Update: I asked for, and did get a refund. They want like $50 wayyyy too much. Also free version promises 5 videos for trial but only give me 2. **Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. The new version of HEVCut has changed a lot since your review, now you can encode an unlimited number of videos for free just by waiting between compressions. You basically get a free video every day, so you can keep using it without paying if you're patient. The trial issue you mentioned has also been fixed. We've also just released version 7 with a completely redesigned interface, smoother navigation, and a brand new photo compressor in addition to video compression. You can now compare before/after results directly in the details page, and there are extra tools for cleaning up duplicate and unwanted media. I'd really appreciate it if you gave the new version a try. I think you'll find it's a much better experience now! ### 3/5 — Great app, too expensive *2025-10-04, version 4.1.0* For the ease of use (not needing to upload to Mac and use HandBrake or FFmpeg) it cannot be beaten. The cost, however, is truly debilitating. I understand it though as most, myself included, will use it once and then change their Camera settings. It’s a real sting and I had to sit on the app for a few weeks before pulling the trigger—a last resort. The UX truly is great… For the right price. I am a musician and film a lot of my performances, which ate up my 2TB iCloud rapidly. I don’t want to lose these, but I probably don’t need my first show from a decade ago in 4k60hz taking up 60gb on my storage. This tool seems to be preserving everything I want while saving lots of space for more performance footage.
