## What is VideoVault?

VideoVault turns YouTube into a parent-curated library for your kid. You decide what gets in. The kid sees only what you approved — nothing else.

How it works
• In parent mode, paste a YouTube URL — a video, a playlist, or a whole channel — and pick how many videos to import.
• Imports go to a review queue. Tap to preview, then approve or reject. Tag, sort, and organize however helps you.
• Switch to kid mode (the default on launch) and your child sees a clean, friendly home with the videos you approved. No suggestions. No autoplay into unrelated videos. No way out of the player to YouTube proper.

What makes VideoVault different
• Approval-only. Nothing reaches your kid until you've explicitly OK'd it.
• No algorithm. YouTube's "up next" recommendations are hidden during playback. Your kid watches what you chose, in the order you chose, then comes back to your home screen.
• One device, one kid. No accounts. No cloud. No multi-profile system to navigate. Each iPad gets its own library, curated for the kid using it.
• You own your data. Everything lives on the device. Nothing is sent to our servers (we don't have any). Export your library as a JSON file at any time and import it onto another iPad.
• Bring your own API key. Each install uses your personal YouTube Data API key, so usage is isolated to your family and effectively free. We walk you through the 5-minute setup.

Built for the kinds of content that don't expire
Educational videos, music, classic shows, how-to channels, nature footage — the kind of YouTube content that's just as good a year from now as it was the day it was published. There's no "fresh content" pressure, no notification spam about new uploads, no sync system. Curate once, watch forever.

Parent mode includes:
• A 5-tab control panel (Library, Review Queue, Sources, Tags, Settings)
• Search YouTube directly from inside the app and add results in one tap
• Default tags per source — automatically tag every imported video from a channel
• Promoted tags that appear as their own row on your kid's home
• PIN-protected mode switch with escalating-timeout protection against guessing
• Export and import your whole library as JSON
• Demo mode that lets you try the app before setting up an API key

What we will not do:
• Sell ads
• Track your child
• Recommend content
• Sync your library to a server
• Show "new uploads" notifications
• Require any account, login, or subscription

A tip jar in Settings supports continued development if you find the app valuable.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-09

A better video player, and some important safety fixes.

**The player**
• A loading indicator while a video starts, instead of a black screen.
• If a video can't play, you now get a clear explanation and a "Try again" button rather than a blank rectangle.
• The back button stays on screen the whole time, so younger kids always have a way out.
• Playback controls no longer overlap YouTube's own controls in landscape.
• Video pauses when a call comes in or headphones are unplugged, instead of carrying on without you.

**Browse by Category**
Category browsing now works for your own imported videos — your kid can filter by Education, Music and so on from the home screen, and you can do the same from the Library tab. Videos already in your library fill in their categories automatically at the next refresh.

**Safer by default**
• Up Next now re-checks your approvals. A video you haven't approved, or one that's become unavailable, can no longer play automatically at the end of another video.
• Importing a library file sends everything to your Review queue by default, whatever the file says it was. You can turn that off for your own backups.
• Videos whose uploader switches off embedding after you imported them are now caught during the regular refresh, instead of failing when your kid taps them.

**Screen Time**
Settings now explains why Screen Time may ask you to approve twice, and how to set it up so it only asks once.

**Under the hood**
Faster syncing, less duplicated work when checking for new uploads, smoother scrolling in large libraries, and better battery use during playback.

### 1.2.1 — 2026-05-14

New videos from your sources now show up automatically when you open VideoVault — no need to enter parent mode first. Plus, pull down on the kid home screen to refresh anytime.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-05-09

• Auto-fetch and auto-approve toggles on each source. Maintain a YouTube
playlist with your partner; new videos you add there appear on your
  kid's home automatically.
• "Sync now" button on the Sources and Library tabs to pull in new
videos immediately when you don't want to wait for the next
  auto-check.
• Set default tags on a source while you're adding it, not after — they
apply to the very first import.
• Bulk tag and bulk remove from the Library tab.
• Demo content clears cleanly when you switch to your own API key.
• Lots of small fixes: thumbnail layout, kid home grid alignment,
catch-up correctness for user-curated playlists, and more.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-05-06

• Join the community on Discord — link in Settings.
• Face ID unlock for parent mode. No more typing the PIN every time.
• Parent mode now locks back to kid mode automatically when you switch
apps or go to the home screen.
• New "Check for new uploads" action on each source — picks up fresh
videos from a channel without rewalking the back catalog.
• Search YouTube is easier to find from the Sources tab and the Add
  Sources sheet.
• Behind the scenes: PIN lockout now survives reinstall, several
potential crashes fixed, metadata refresh cancels properly when you
switch tabs, and lots of small polish.
