## What is Viewpoint?

KNOW WHEN IT IS WORTH GOING OUT. THEN PLAN THE SHOT.

Viewpoint is the planner for outdoor and astro photographers, all in one app. The Conditions tab tells you, for every place you follow, whether it is worth going out and when your next window opens. What runs on your phone works without a signal.

CALCULATORS AND TOOLS
No purchase and no account needed.
• Depth of field and hyperfocal: know what will be sharp before you focus.
• Long exposure, star trails, and the longest shutter that keeps stars as points.
• The sun, moon and Milky Way almanac, the sky-events calendar and a light meter.
• And much more, working offline on your phone.

CONDITIONS
For every place you follow: is it worth going out, and when is your next window? A tile for each condition: clear night, golden light, fog, snow, storm light, darkness, the sun, the moon, light pollution and sky events. This comes with Online.

NIGHT SKY AND ASTRO
Sun, moon and Milky Way positions for any spot, worked out on your phone.
• Explore (Pro): the day and time the sun or moon lines up with your subject.
• AR Scout (Pro): raise your phone and see the sun, moon and Milky Way drawn over the camera.
• Satellite transits (Pro): when the Space Station crosses the sun or the moon near you.
• Light pollution (Online): how much light rises from the ground at a place, from a year of night-time satellite measurements, with the darker places nearby and the distance and direction to each.

SMART ALERTS
Alerts belong to a place you follow (Online). Each one weighs that place's forecast, the darkness and the moon, then tells you which way to look.
• Aurora alerts also set tonight's Kp against the Kp your place needs.
• Golden light, fog, clear night skies, snow, storm light. Quiet by default.
• An aurora heads-up a few hours ahead, once per night.

FIELD SCOUTING
Capture a spot in one tap and keep your places in maps of your own.
• Capture (Pro): one tap saves a spot with its GPS, compass bearing, sun position and your photo's EXIF. Add notes and shoot plans.
• Maps of your spots (Pro): group the places you scout.
• Find Your Viewpoint (Online): name your subject and get real places to stand, with the time the sun, moon or Milky Way lines up behind it.
• Sync across your devices, compressed photo copies, and sharing a spot or a map with another photographer (Online).
• Viewpoint on the web: your library, maps and plans on the big screen (Online).

STUDIO
Turn your shots into carousels and pan videos. Studio is part of Pro.
• Carousels and pan videos from a panorama, spec cards and before-and-after reels.
• Home and lock screen widgets (Pro).

CHOOSE YOUR PLAN
• On every plan: calculators such as depth of field and hyperfocal, the almanac, the sky-events calendar and the light meter. No account, no ads.
• Pro, yours to keep: Explore, AR Scout, satellite transits, capture and your library, maps, shoot plans and Studio, and widgets. No subscription.
• Online: everything that needs a connection, with Pro included while you subscribe. Choose monthly, quarterly or yearly. Quarterly and yearly make Pro yours to keep after the first paid period; monthly includes Pro only while you subscribe.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.1.1 — 2026-10-23

Viewpoint 2.1.1: the first fixes for 2.1.

• Your temperature unit, everywhere. If you use Fahrenheit, the Conditions header, the high and low, your place cards and the weather tiles now match the hourly forecast.
• The northern lights sky. When the aurora reaches your place at night, the Conditions page shows the aurora sky it was meant to.
• Numbers in your language. The sun's height in the almanac and the numbers for eclipses, meteor showers and satellite passes use your language's decimal mark.
• Unlocking Pro from a tool keeps you on that tool. Upgrading from a tool's own screen now opens that tool, instead of sending you to Conditions.
• Links go all the way. A spot or map link opened while the app was closed now opens the spot or the map, and on iPad it is selected in the side-by-side view.
• The light pollution card's button opens its map. It asks for your location once, and the map's double-tap and appearance behave on iPhone.
• Your places stay tidy. Following your current location from the bell no longer piles up near-duplicate places with blank names.
• On iPad, the Conditions header shows the sun and moon facts line again.
• Back to now on the moon. Scrub more than two days away and a circled arrow at the edge of the title points the way back; tap it to return to tonight.
• Smoother moon scrubbing. Dragging through the days moves the moon without stutter.
• The plan comparison is accurate: the table of what each plan includes lists Studio with the plan that has it.
• Photo sync wording. We describe photo sync as a compressed copy, not a backup, so you know what is stored.

### 2.1.0 — 2026-10-21

Viewpoint 2.1: the conditions come first.

• Now open to everyone, no purchase and no account needed: timelapse, panorama, subject distance and focal match join depth of field, hyperfocal, long exposure, star trails, the almanac and the light meter. And much more.
• Conditions, a new tab. For every place you follow it answers whether it is worth going out, and when: your next window, and the coming hours or days in one card. Swipe between places.
• A tile for every condition. Fog, golden light, clear night, snow, storm light, darkness, the sun and the moon each get a tile. Tap one for the numbers behind the headline.
• Aurora alerts with the facts. The alert names the place and the Kp now, tonight's highest expected Kp and the Kp your place needs, with the dark window, the moon and the cloud. A separate heads-up arrives a few hours ahead, once per night.
• Sky events. A tile for meteor showers and the Milky Way core window at your place, worked out on your phone, so it works with no signal.
• Light pollution. See how much light rises from the ground at a place, from a year of night-time satellite measurements, and the darker places nearby with the distance and direction to each.
• Your places. Follow any place on Earth, put your places in the order you want and turn alerts on for each one.
• Pro adds the alignment planner, AR Scout, satellite transits, capture and your library, maps, shoot plans, Studio and widgets. What is already on your phone stays readable.
• A calmer first minute. Setup is short and skippable, and your phone asks for notifications, the camera and your photos only when you first need them.
• Signing out never locks you out. The app keeps opening without an account.
• A Data sources screen in Settings credits every source behind the forecasts, the sky and the maps.
• On iPad the Conditions page uses the width of the screen, and pull down to refresh settles back when the new conditions arrive.

### 2.0.0 — 2026-10-13

Viewpoint 2.0 opens on your tools, and six of them are free.

• Free to start. Depth of Field, Hyperfocal, Exposure, Long Exposure, Star Trails and Spot Stars are free for everyone, with no purchase and no account, and they work without a signal.
• A Today card on top: sunrise, golden hour, sunset and the moon for where you are, worked out on your phone.
• Pay once for Pro. One purchase, no subscription, unlocks everything that runs on your device: capture and your library, maps, shoot plans, the light meter, the almanac, AR Scout, Studio, widgets, and the Timelapse, Panorama, Subject Distance and Focal Match calculators. No account needed.
• Online, now monthly, quarterly or yearly. Live conditions, alerts, sync, photo backup, sharing and the web app, with Pro included while you subscribe and a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Once you've paid for your first quarter or year, Pro stays yours.
• Ten calculators that work the same way. The answer comes first, with a diagram that follows your inputs. Most settings start as presets, with a Custom value when yours isn't listed, and each calculator explains how to use it. Star Trails plans the frames for your run and lets you face the north or the south celestial pole.
• Four tabs, one job each: Tools, Weather, Planner and Studio. Your saved spots and maps live in Planner, and the iPad sidebar follows the same order.
• One unlock screen. Whatever is locked opens the same screen, showing what you get and how it works.
• Readable at the largest text sizes. Labels, times and values on the new screens stay whole.
• Panorama counts frames the way stitching software needs them.
• Paid for a Viewpoint subscription before 2.0? Pro is yours to keep, and everything you use today is still here.

### 1.12.0 — 2026-09-29

The real sky, in the AR scout and on the map.

• The real Milky Way in AR Scout. Turn on Milky Way and the scout lays a real photograph of the whole sky over your camera — the bright core, the dark dust lanes — exactly where it sits for your place and time. It stays see-through, follows you as you turn and roll the phone, and looks the same above and below the horizon, so you can trace the whole band. In daylight it becomes a dark strip of night sky, so you can plan tonight's shot in the afternoon.
• The sun and moon as you'll see them. The sun's path takes the colour of the light — deep blue before dawn, violet in the blue hour, red at sunrise, orange in the golden hour, yellow by day. The moon is a real photograph, lit at tonight's phase and turned the way it will appear. Both stay visible below the horizon, and a dashed line marks the horizon even offline.
• Find the core. A target labelled "Milky Way core", with its height, shows exactly where to aim.
• Conditions that look like the weather. Cloud, fog, golden light, snow and storm light now appear on the map as real textures instead of flat colour. Clouds cover as much of the map as the forecast says, fog settles in the valleys, golden light warms the land, and storm light shows lightning only where a thunderstorm is forecast. The map always shows through.
• Easier to read. The legend shows each condition's actual look, the map switches to a dark style while a condition is on so it stands out, and changing the hour crossfades instead of jumping.
• A more reliable north in AR Scout. The scout now waits for a true-north heading before drawing, falls back to a corrected compass indoors, and asks iOS to calibrate the compass when it needs to — so the sun, moon and Milky Way land where they really are.

### 1.11.0 — 2026-09-26

The aurora, one tap from everywhere.

• Tonight, right where your alerts arrive. The aurora card now sits at the top of Notifications — the verdict for tonight, the next 72 hours judged against that place's own threshold, and the best hour still ahead — without opening a spot or waiting for an alert.
• For where you are, or where you're going. It answers for your current location by default. Tap the location to pick any saved spot instead, and Viewpoint remembers your choice.
• Arm the alert from there. The bell on the card sets an aurora alert for that place, and "Aurora detail" opens the full view with the chart, the dark window and the mute controls.

Location stays on your phone unless you set an alert; without it, the card says so and lets you pick a spot.

Aurora alerts are part of the Online plan.

New tools ship almost every week.
