### 5/5 — Great game

*2017-02-18, version 1.2.1*

In this RPG, player knowledge about monster behavior is translated directly into character success. You're awarded different stars (and in game rewards for your character) if you complete quests in fewer turns. Lots of fun and replay-ability.

### 5/5 — Just fun

*2017-02-17, version 1.2.1*

I read an interview with the developer today on Touch Arcade, which made me curious if I missed a good RPG.Dont let the primitive graphics scare you away, this is a fantasticly designed game which is perfect for people old enough to enjoy early cosole RPGs. I am loving this!!!

### 5/5 — Please make more!

*2016-10-16, version 1.2.1*

One of my absolute favorites. The graphics are budget, & the adventure is on the short side, but this is one of the most advanced & innovative games around.

It's the RPG equivalent of an old school hot rod: strip away all the excess weight, supercharge the engine, then tune & balance it all to perfection. The "engine" in this case is the combat system, and it's a nitro burning beast.

I wholeheartedly recommend Vigil to anyone considering it, and I sincerely hope that AggroMagnet brings more games like this to market.

### 5/5 — Retro stylings with tactical combat and modern design consideration.

*2014-11-30, version 1.0.5*

From the beginning, Vigil RPG really respects the player’s time. Whenever I need to duck out or close the game, I’m always taken back to exactly the same place, whether in town, outside, or even in the middle of a combat.

By only having a single party member, the turn based combat seems simple at first, but each enemy has their own attack patterns and “tells”, and learning these is the secret to success and is extremely satisfying.

It can be comfortably played with just a single thumb which I’ve found to be really useful when stuck on a crowded train or holding my baby. It also plays nice with Downcast (podcast app), which is appreciated.

I look forward to seeing what this dev does next.

### 5/5 — Great classic experience!

*2014-11-29, version 1.0.5*

Proof that you don't need a huge team of people to create a fun game. Enemies are dynamic in the sense that each encounter has a different strategy to finish with minimal damage taken. Many current RPG's feel far too easy as you breeze through them. This feels challenging without being overly difficult. The movement system is tied into the quest rewards; so it pays off to play in a smart way. As you progress you can unlock "key items" that help you on your journey, including the much needed ability to teleport back to town. Vigil RPG's strength is it's risk vs reward gameplay. You will need to balance out grinding for EXP and purchasing weapon/armor upgrades before you can take on bosses: All the while your turn counter ticks up for every world map movement you make. If you finish a quest in a certain amount of turns, the reward is better. Creating a challenging equilibrium of risking boss kills early for a better pay off and potentially take the extra turns penalty on death, or grinding a bit longer to make sure you won't die. I rate this game five stars not only because it is fun while still being somewhat hard, but it also offers a "replayability" factor via the turns system. Definitely worth skipping a meal at Mc Donald's for the hours of enjoyment! -Ryan K.

### 5/5 — Excellent RPG!

*2014-11-23*

This is a really good game and it delivers exactly as stated: an RPG made for your phone. Some of the tasks seem overly hard to do quickly, but a few hours into the game and you'll start reaching some of the targets. My only concern at the moment: how do you kill the bats to collect their wings? They keep flying away!

### 5/5 — Solid old school RPG

*2014-11-19, version 1.0.4*

Love it so far!

### 5/5 — An elegant little old-school RPG

*2014-11-16, version 1.0.3*

Vigil RPG hearkens back to a simpler time in gaming, and one that I mostly missed. The plot is simple and charming, and mostly an excuse to wander the countryside bashing monsters. The combat is straightforward but has some unexpected subtleties, since success depends on learning to recognize the monsters' attacking patterns and reacting appropriately.

The game also has the virtue that you can pick it up and play for a minute or two when you're free, rather than demanding that you sit down for a long session. It's great for filling in the gaps in a busy day.

Highly recommended!

### 5/5 — Epic, Fun, 8-bit RPG

*2014-11-16, version 1.0.3*

I just lost a lot of hours to this, and its only scratched the surface I think. It embraces all that is classic in old school rpgs, and has fun with it. It’s light, easy, and fun — everything I want.

### 5/5 — Old school goodness

*2014-11-14, version 1.0.2*

This is a great rpg. Reminds me a lot of early nes style ones. The best part is its been adjusted for mobile and saves everywhere. Certainly worth the money.

### 5/5 — Old School RPG

*2014-11-13, version 1.0.1*

Vigil RPG is a turn based RPG that will be familiar to fans of old NES and CRPG games. The combat is interesting and you're always in danger of losing, even to a simple rat or goblin. You can also play the game one handed! Great portable game.

### 5/5 — A treat

*2014-11-11, version 1.0*

An amazingly fun rpg. Perfect to play on your phone. If you enjoy old school RPGs, this one is for you. Kudos to the singular creator. It's nice to support designers such as this

### 5/5 — Awesome old school RPG

*2014-11-11, version 1.0*

Vigil RPG is such an awesome throw back to the RPGs of the 80s. It gives me the warm fuzzies of playing Dragon Warrior as a kid. I appreciate the balanced game play right from the beginning that requires you to make interesting game play decisions. Highly recommended!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Boo

*2019-03-06, version 1.2.1*

Just falls flat... there is no healing... like what?

### 3/5 — So close..it’s good but..

*2025-01-13, version 3.0.6*

It’s hard to get behind an RPG when it thinks that I’m a black woman. I’d give this game 5 stars if it allowed for the most basic character customization. And if it stopped calling me a woman.

### 4/5 — Cool

*2015-03-08, version 1.1.0*

Nice streamlined rpg

### 5/5 — Great simple game.

*2025-11-22, version 3.0.6*

I just randomly came back to playing this. Still lots of fun!

### 5/5 — Fun & the most elegant user experience

*2025-11-13, version 3.0.6*

This is such a well designed RPG experience specifically for iOS. I realise this game is 10 years old but I don’t think I’ve come across another RPG that feels as good as Vigil RPG does!

The gameplay has been simplified in certain areas to suit the form factor, but it’s still just as fun and just as delightful a story. The aesthetics are kind of primitive, but in a way that also feels very handmade.

This feels like a game that has been crafted to play, and not like a product engineered to extract time or money.

### 5/5 — Truly fantastic.

*2024-09-17, version 3.0.6*

It’s simple, it’s fun, and it’s got heart. i’m not the type to leave a review for anything but *this* sparks joy. your passion is tangible. thank you for making this game.

### 5/5 — Absolute gem

*2024-07-25, version 3.0.6*

I rarely do written reviews. But I needed to say, how I love it when these passion projects show up. They are hard to find, and I will gladly support devs like this . Well worth the admission fee for your hard work.

So it’s not really a review, and more a thank you! And a note to anyone browsing.. there are no scams here. Honestly it’s a breath of fresh air to find games like this!

### 5/5 — Hidden gem

*2024-06-04, version 3.0.4*

I saw something pop up about a new major update and decided to re-download, and realized I had never left a review. Let’s fix that!

The perfect blend of simplicity meets strategy, perfect for picking up for minutes or playing for hours. The game truly rewards efficiency in strategy as evidenced in the turn counts for better quest rewards and keeping track of your high score (in turns to objective).

I agree adding a “tip” option would be great as 10 years of updates and comparability work is huge for a game with a one time unlock and that gives reasons to replay to beat old scores.

Would love to see a sequel :)

### 5/5 — Finally! An accessible RPG!

*2022-10-19, version 2.2.1*

I don’t know how I missed this game all these years, but after searching high and low for an accessible RPG I finally found this, and I’m super happy I did.

This is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. I’ve tried so many different RPGs and deleted them for various reasons. But this developer has literally done every single thing right with this game.

It’s super easy to learn. There’s depth without it being overly complicated like too many RPGs are. It saves progress at all times. You can quickly hop in and out whether you have only a minute or hours to play. For busy people like me, this is huge. It means I can play at my own pace and always make some progress.

Also the file size is small, it hardly uses battery, there are zero ads or IAP, and the developer has kept this updated.

Thank you so much, developer. I was about to give up on finding a well done, simple but deep enough, RPG. I thought it didn’t exist. You’ve made my day and this will stay on my phone. If there was a tip option I’d gladly tip you. I really appreciate the rare developers like you who make good games and monetize them fairly. I just can’t say enough good things about this game.

### 5/5 — Wonderful old school RPG!!

*2019-08-06, version 1.2.1*

I bought this as soon as I saw the graphics. This is old school all the way - even fown to the single developer working alone, just like those Atari 800 games I loved in the 1980s.

The gameplay is simple (which I love), the goals are clear, the music is GREAT, and the graphics - perfect! I don't like ultra-real 3D scenery except in racing games. Loved the goatee on my character too. I am happy with graphics just like these. Loads of similarities to the original Wizardry (the "stables - free!" Was a giveaway), which again is a great thing. I wish we had the original Wiz for iPhone...

The price is very reasonable, I appreciate the developer's efforts (I read the credits, Jon!) and am going to enjoy finishing this little gem.

## Most praised reviews (3 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Clever, focused old-school RPG

*2018-06-02, version 1.2.1*

I play this on breaks at work and it's perfect. Learning each enemy's attacks and optimizing your path are fun, or you can just go along for the ride. Well worth a buck! More, please.

### 5/5 — Great App and Inspiration - Hoping for Sequel

*2018-03-26, version 1.2.1*

I purchased this app after reading your interview on making a one-man game. Thanks for putting so much awesome info in the credits/acknowledgements. It is definitely challenging but also a lot of fun to play! I'll definitely buy your next game!

### 5/5 — Great little game!

*2018-02-21, version 1.2.1*

I know I’m late to the party but what a great find this was.
