## What is Violearn?

Violearn teaches you to read violin sheet music, then listens while you play it.

LEARN THE NOTES, IN ORDER
A guided path from open strings to the full fingerboard, in short steps. The first step shows you where each note is; the next ones take the help away and mix in notes you have already learned, so they stay fresh; the last checks what stuck. Fifteen lessons, one string at a time, then the keys of D, G, A, E, C, F and B flat.

PRACTICE THAT TARGETS WHAT YOU MISS
Every answer is remembered. The daily review quietly serves you more of the notes you get wrong and fewer of the ones you have already mastered, so ten minutes goes exactly where it is needed.

PRACTISE YOUR OWN MUSIC
Bring in the piece your teacher gave you. Photograph the printed page and Violearn reads the notes for you; check what it read and fix anything it got wrong. Or import a MusicXML file from any notation app. Either way, Violearn builds a practice plan for it: a warm-up for what the piece asks, its own scale, its hardest bars slowly and back up to tempo, then the whole piece.

A WHOLE PRACTICE SESSION, GUIDED
Tune up, warm up, scales, then real music — in order, with the clock running. Today's practice starts from the plan you did last time. Nine traditional pieces are included, from Hot Cross Buns to Pachelbel's Canon.

SHARE YOUR WEEK
Send your teacher a picture of your week's practice: minutes each day, where you are in the lessons, the notes to work on and your hardest bars.

PLAY, AND BE HEARD
Violearn listens to your violin through the microphone and follows you note by note as the music scrolls past. Set how strict it should be: forgiving while you are finding the positions, strict when you are working on intonation.

A TUNER THAT MEANS IT
A chromatic tuner accurate to the cent, with a tap-to-hear reference for each string. Calibrate to your own instrument so every note is judged against your violin rather than a textbook.

WATCH YOURSELF IMPROVE
Accuracy for every note on the staff, daily practice streaks, and a "needs work" list that shrinks as you learn.

BUILT FOR PRACTISING
No account. No setup. Works on iPhone and iPad, in portrait or landscape — prop the iPad on a music stand and read from it.

YOUR PRACTICE STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE
Recordings are never stored or sent anywhere. The microphone is used only while you are actually playing. Music you add is stored only on your device; when you ask Violearn to read a photo, a picture of each line of music is sent to Google's Gemini to be read.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.8 — 2026-11-02

Practise your own music, and lessons in short steps.

• Read the notes from a photo: photograph a printed page and Violearn reads it into music you can play along with. Check what it read and fix anything it got wrong.
• Bring in your own music: import a MusicXML file, or scan the pages with your camera.
• Practice plans: choose a piece and Violearn builds a session for it — its scale, its hardest bars slowly, then the whole piece.
• A clearer Play tab: today's practice at the top, a screen for each piece with every way to practise it, and technique drills together.
• Play along at tempo: the music moves at your speed and each note turns green or red as you go. Or choose "Wait for me" to learn a piece note by note. The screen stays on while you play.
• Share your week with your teacher as a picture.
• New drills: arpeggios in three passes, each quicker than the last, shifting between first and third position, and tapping the rhythm of your own pieces. Rhythm reading now comes in 3/4 and 2/4 too.
• A guide to playing along with a recording, a friend or a band.
• Each lesson is split into short steps. The first shows you where every note is, the next ones mix in notes from earlier lessons, and the last checks what you've learned.
• Three new lessons: E major, F major and B flat major.
• Violearn now asks for the microphone when you first open the tuner, not as soon as the app starts.
• Send feedback from Settings — every message is read.
• The metronome keeps going after a phone call or a change of headphones.

### 1.7 — 2026-09-15

New practice session mode, guided from start to finish. Improvements to play and practice modes.

### 1.6 — 2026-08-15

NEW PRACTICE SESSIONS
Violearn now runs the session, not just the drills. Tune up, warm up,
work a scale, then play music — in that order, the way a lesson goes.
Choose 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes and it builds a session to fit.

### 1.5 — 2026-08-11

Improvements to Tuner and Play performance

### 1.4 — 2026-08-06

IPAD AND LANDSCAPE
Violearn now fills an iPad properly, in either orientation. Turn the screen sideways and Play mode becomes a music stand: the note you're on sits large in the middle, with the notes coming next already on the staff.

A TUNER YOU CAN ACTUALLY TUNE TO
The tuner has been rebuilt. It now measures pitch across many cycles of the string instead of one, so the A and E strings hold steady instead of drifting. Tap any string to pin the tuner to it — the most reliable way to tune. It tells you to tighten or loosen in plain words, and the dial no longer treats a nearly-perfect string as if it were badly out.

PLAY MODE THAT RECOGNISES YOUR PLAYING
Play mode now credits a note when you've basically played it right, which is what tuning on a real violin actually looks like. It learns how your instrument sits against concert pitch and allows for it, and it no longer misses a note because it heard the harmonic instead of the string.
