### 2/5 — Frustrating

*2026-05-02, version 3.46.0*

Only reason to use it is to get Virgin Points but this has to be juggled with Virgin Red app. Also it’s not available on a desktop or laptop.

### 4/5 — Good, but needs one small fix.

*2026-02-28, version 3.44.0*

I hope the developers see this. I like the app, but I have one request for improvement. If I buy return tickets for two people and save them (4) to my wallet, and then send one pair to my partner (go and return) the e-tickets in the wallet are difficult to tell them apart. Sure, there are two outward tickets, and two return tickets, but the two outward tickets look identical to each other, as do the two return tickets. It is therefore difficult to check that we don’t both carry the same tickets once I’ve shared them. This would cause problems at the barrier.
Sharing from the app does not put them in the wallet.
I hope I’ve explained adequately!
…The developers have promised to consider this request so I’ve added a star to the rating. Just one more to go!

### 3/5 — Crashes a lot

*2025-08-13, version 3.41.0*

It’s good but you frequently get OOPS something went wrong on various pages whilst trying to book something. Even though I have a full signal and everything else works. You have to go back to the start which will default to single and not return and if you’re not paying attention you can book just a single due to the errors. This will put anyone off who likes to use apps as the ticket inspector is walking down the carriage lol

### 2/5 — Open return functionality

*2025-03-24, version 3.37.0*

The Open Return option includes Day Returns- resulting in customers booking the wrong ticket

### 2/5 — Bugs existing

*2025-03-18, version 3.37.0*

Bug1: split ticket doesn’t show sometimes
Bug2: train timing next available train button doesn’t work

### 4/5 — Good value, could be smoother for compensation and refunds

*2025-02-03, version 3.35.0*

App is easy to use and to select required journeys, however process to apply for compensation if delayed or refund if plans change is very clunky and you’re never quite sure it has got your details correctly eg it asks what type ticket, but you may be on a split ticket so some as Anytime and some of the journey Advanced. Only gives option to enter one UTR, but could have two on a split ticket. However, it is cost effective and doesn’t change a booking fee like its competitor. The reward points, although not a generous scheme are a welcome extra.

### 2/5 — No updates to train status

*2025-02-02, version 3.35.0*

Overall okay ticketing app. Gave 2 stars because the app does not notify when changes are made to journey in real-time. Would appreciate a push notification or email when my train is cancelled

### 4/5 — Need more work

*2024-12-03, version 3.32.0*

Despite its great reward scheme, the app itself isn’t that mature yet. I buy open return tickets everyday and yet everyday I need to select it again because it gets reset to single. To/from fields have memory but not the ticket type.

### 3/5 — Room for improvement

*2024-11-15, version 3.32.0*

Not a bad app and one I have been regularly been using over the last few months and will still use.

Pro:
- Able to collect Virgin Red rewards for flights, cruises, free tickets etc.
- The split ticketing feature actually works well compared to others. Quite often (not guaranteed) that I get the same seat reservation for the whole trip. Something a lot of competitors struggle with.
- No booking fees

Issues:
- Unable to bulk book tickets. Meaning that when I book my next month of commuter trips I have to book individually.
- If I change the day on outbound, the return time resets to 1 hour after outbound. Just makes it an annoyance when I’m looking to book multiple tickets for same time across multiple days.
- No web portal available to use on the computer.
- I’ve seen at times certain train times disappear from the list as I move towards earlier or later. Something I can fix by going back to search and look at timing.
- Rare issue but be good to flag before purchase if I have to collect tickets from a different station because no machines operate at station. Learnt the hard way and had to get a refund.

### 4/5 — Good App however needs iPad capability

*2024-09-29, version 3.30.0*

I like the app and how you can book and earn points. Would have earnt 5 stars however I wish the app was compatible with an iPad as well as offered E-tickets for ScotRail journeys (ScotRail app does it so it is possible).

### 2/5 — What am I missing

*2024-09-17, version 3.29.0*

I cannot see how to book advance purchase first tickets for specific trains. Only first available is by choosing flexible fares and the fares rise

### 3/5 — Phone number is used for something else

*2024-08-22, version 3.27.0*

Almost instantly at sign up, the user is told their phone number is needed for verification purposes and nothing else. But then 1 screen later, you have to check a box to not receive marketing via SMS. This is a misleading user experience.

I’ve also been asked 3 different times at sign up now if I want to be emailed about special offers. No means no?

### 4/5 — Points for Trains

*2024-07-06, version 3.24.0*

Great that I can collect points just for booking my
Regular work travel anyway!!!
To get a 5 star I would just love an “add to calendar” option like train line offers… so my train times can be put straight into the iPhone calander instead of my having to manually add to my diary! Thanks

### 4/5 — Decent

*2024-05-12, version 3.20.0*

Pretty good, my only nag is the journey tracker should be at the forefront of the app and automatically load up my current booking and refresh, a bit like trainline.

### 3/5 — Ok but tweaks needed

*2024-03-04, version 3.13.0*

1) please can the app remember my travel card so I don’t have to add it each time

2) please can it the tickets be added to Apple Pay with more ease , I.e. in bulk for a split save return rather than 4 adds

Thank you

Other than that a nice design

### 3/5 — e-tickets never available

*2024-02-14, version 3.12.0*

Really good app, so easy to use, however e-tickets are hardly ever available on the cheapest tickets through this app, and that makes this app very hard to recommend. No point spending more money to use it.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Train travel with points

*2026-07-24, version 3.48.0*

Following all the steps & still unable to buy train tickets with points. Keeps sending me back to buying & earning points which I don’t want. A complete waste of my time trying to

### 1/5 — Poor service

*2025-11-09, version 3.42.0*

Regularly books the wrong train time.
Cancellation button directs to a 404 error.
Help pages give incorrect information on exchanges (at least insofar as the support staff claim the processes are not as described online).

### 1/5 — The app where you can’t but tickets

*2025-08-23, version 3.41.0*

Far too often, you search for a ticket, select the price you want and move to the next screen. Inevitably the price rises by a few quid (why?) but even if this is acceptable to you (feels like you are being played here), suddenly the app is “unable to provide this fare”.
Awful to be honest and even 2 stars feels generous.

### 1/5 — High prices

*2024-11-30, version 3.32.0*

Try to encourage you with Virgin points offered, then offer much higher prices than Trainline. Return tickets for 2 adults from Manchester to Euston with railcard, £114 on Trainline, £141 on Virgin app.

### 1/5 — DO NOT DOWNLOAD

*2023-12-27, version 3.10.0*

this is the worst train app. As a regular traveller in many countries and thus, train user in many of these countries. This is the worst ticketing app you could get, despite its low level of being anywhere near user friendly, it’s processed are completely outdated.

I had rebooked a new train within a matter of minutes and have been messed around by arrogant, ignorant and rude staff who can’t be bothered to do their job in trying to pursue a simple refund. Their ticketing conditions are different than those of the train companies they provide tickets for which makes it both worse as they’re much more stricter but also the difference makes it hard to keep track

### 1/5 — Avoid this App- No ticket sent after purchase

*2023-11-25, version 3.9.0*

I purchased a ticket from this app and no ticket was sent after purchase neither on app nor on email. I rang the help desk for a refund and they asked me to go through email and “they are just a help desk “.
Absolutely ridiculous service and this whole app seems like a SCAM.

Never expected this from a brand like Virgin. Shame on you.

### 1/5 — App does not work anymore

*2023-10-15, version 3.6.0*

Tried yesterday and today to book a train ticket. App says “check your network connection and try again”. News flash. I am connected to the internet on a full fibre line.

Seems like the developers don’t care any more.

### 1/5 — Get a grip

*2023-10-01, version 3.5.0*

Doesn’t work on ipad

### 1/5 — Fees and won’t accept payment!

*2023-03-30, version 2.0.1*

Will not accept payment by Apple Pay, or any credit or debit cards I’ve tried. In the end I booked with Northern Rail and saved the booking fee, but then I couldn’t get the virgin points or cash back Virgin we’re offering me. :(

### 1/5 — Stick with Trainline

*2023-03-17, version 2.0.1*

Minimal benefit of booking through virgin apart from when you want to book they apply a £10 fee across both tickets (outbound and inbound) which is different to Trainline so I’ll be sticking with Trainline and deleting the app - greed over customer flexibility. No flexibility if you rebook and poor customer service.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Favourite ticket app

*2026-09-10, version 3.49.0*

There’s one thing I would change, but lots of things I like about this app.

First, the thing I would change would be to be able to manually expire one month return tickets when I’ve used the return portion early.

They sit in my current tickets even though I’ve used the return part by the end of my weekend visits. I visit the same place on different weekends and use different train operators, so not always sure which ticket have been used.

I still like to use this app regularly as I can search trains and buy tickets easily. It remembers my rail card and it gives me Virgin points.

It also offers me the amount of discount related to my total points but allows me to choose how much discount to apply in order to not use all my points at once.

It saves my tickets and stay in my tickets list til the one month return date expires.

### 5/5 — Easy to book

*2026-03-05, version 3.45.0*

Good system easy to book and pay

### 5/5 — Very Good

*2026-02-13, version 3.44.0*

The best rail ticket app I have used with a decent Live Departures function. Would be great to have an iPad version so you can use it on both types of device.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2026-02-01, version 3.44.0*

As a frequent train user it’s great to be able to earn points from my train tickets

### 5/5 — Straight away

*2025-12-04, version 3.43.0*

Amazing app….. got me the cheapest first class tickets

### 5/5 — Additional feature needed

*2025-05-16, version 3.38.0*

Great app but would be great if there was a function to buy ‘weekly’ or ‘monthly’ train passes like the other providers like Trainline.

Would be great if this could be added!

### 5/5 — Incredible app

*2025-02-27, version 3.37.0*

Really good alternative to Trainline.

### 5/5 — Very good

*2024-11-23, version 3.32.0*

Very good app, easy to get tickets, like that you earn points, easy to get a refund should you need to, user-friendly and easy to navigate, able to reserve seats even though not booking directly with the train operator, payment is fast and easy too. Live departure information is good too - shows destination and stop you’re going to more clearly.

### 5/5 — Fantastic app

*2023-07-11, version 2.5.2*

Easy to use and I can stack up savings each time I travel thanks to the loyalty programme with Virgin Red!

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2022-09-24, version 1.2.0*

Fantastic app, not only does it not charge you a fee, like every other ticket app I've used, but you even get reward points! On top of that you it's also the best presents and easy to use ticket app I've ever used.

10/10
