I really want to use this app on my phone, but it never seems to want to work easily. ### 3/5 — Security Issues *2022-01-30, version 3.18.0* I like Virtru in general, my only major complaint is that, at least on my iPhone 11 Pro running iOS 15.2, the passcode options do not work and lock me out of the app, forcing me to delete and reinstall. That’s true whether I go with the alphanumeric code or Face ID. Either way it locks the app and it cannot be unlocked. Even though I use a passcode/Face ID on my phone itself, I still use app specific locks whenever possible. If we’re serious about security, this glitch with the iOS Virtru app needs to be fixed immediately. Because I consider that to be an especially serious flaw, I only gave the app 3 stars, whereas I would’ve given it 4 or 5 stars otherwise. ### 2/5 — Poor function *2021-09-27, version 3.16.0* I have to use this app for my job, and ever since I started using it I rarely get the emails sent to me through this app. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. For example, I’m trying to view a secure email that was sent today (5/14/2020), and the app is showing emails from mid-April. When I try to refresh and load emails, it shows me the spinning load icon but is not displaying the latest emails. Seems like its downloading emails in multiple batches. Each refresh downloads a few emails at a time. Ridiculous!! After logging in to my Office 365 account via the Virtru app to “activate”, I got an email that Virtru for iOS was being activated, but then the app was unable to load any secure emails. It gives me a “not authorized” error. Deleted don’t feel secure ### 4/5 — Emails disappear *2019-06-08, version 3.4.2* I have been using this service for several years and love it. Recently I found a problem though. I have a google account that I use as a gateway to forward emails to my other account and then delete for security reasons. So, every time I send an encrypted email to this gateway address with forwarding allowed, the email isn’t forwarded and goes to the trash folder. ### 2/5 — Great when it works, horrible shortcomings *2019-05-03, version 3.4.1* Basically it’s great for a quick email and an attachment or two. It has a LOT of potential, but the fatal problems get very frustrating: 1) Deletes drafts, never saves. You get a call in the middle of composing? Everything you wrote will be irretrievably deleted. 2) Image handling is insane. For a product that most likely will be attaching things like scanned documents, you must choose each page, one at a time, from only a tiny thumbnail. Nearly impossible to be accurate after attaching a few. You could try making those images into a PDF but then Virtru wont let you attach it. There’s also no “send to” feature, which would be a great workaround. 3) There’s some sort of bug where the keyboard frequently starts blocking what you are writing and you can’t see what you have written. Workarounds: 1) Compose in Notes then copy over the text. 2) Haven’t found a workaround for multiple images except prayer. Maybe a third party app that creates and saves PDF to one of the locations you can browse to. I hate to give this app such a low rating because when it does work it can be awesome. But a lot of these problems seem like rookie coding errors and hopefully they can improve this stuff soon. I hate to say it because subscriptions seem like such a scam, but I’d be willing to pitch in a buck a month just to have this app on my phone for when I need it, and would wholeheartedly recommend it to others. But these problems need to be addressed before I’d even consider that. Without consistency, you simply can’t rely on it working when you need it. Do not use this for anything personal. Virtru can see all emails associated with your account and are likely able to download all of them. I do not know why they need access to past emails when you are using them specifically to send and recieve crypted emails. And although I got the email confirmation of verification, the app does not reflect this. I have the app downloaded and got a new phone, now can’t open anything as they are verifying my email going a several hours now. I’ve used various systems but none that I tried worked natively within the Gmail interface - until I came across Virtru. Within a few minutes of signing up with Virtru I was able to send & receive secure encrypted emails within Gmail. The iOS is excellent and it just works when I need it.
